Basic DPMS precision build

Recommended Posts

I modified my 24" fluted stainless steel LR-308 for more precision: I added a Chip McCormic trigger pack (the biggest single improvement I made for accuracy's sake), changed the gas block (I hated the big, ugly stock DPMS gas block, so it was a purely cosmetic change), had the end threaded 5/8-24 for a muzzle device, and changed the furniture to a more comfortable setup.

I recently was able to shoot it after waiting a few weeks for the Duracoat to cure.  It still shoots 1/2 MOA, even after the barrel was threaded.  I was concerned about changing my barrel harmonics and losing the 1/2 MOA capability.

I'd just like to say thanks to you guys.  This is by far my favorite rifle and spent some time and care when selecting upgrades and accessories so they work with how and where I like to shoot this rifle.

As for the muzzle end, I've had a Gemtech HVT for a few years now.  I had to get over my fear of degrading this rifle's performance, finally decided to bite the bullet, and have this rifle threaded.  The timing coincided with getting it Duracoated.  I chose flecktarn because it seems to work really well in my area.

Unfortunetly, the guy that did the work put this project on the back burner, and I think that the spots should have been made up of a bunch of smaller dots, not just of big blobs like he did.  Flecktarn is actually a six color pattern, but I did tell him that five colors were okay.

I do believe he was pressed for time- he had a crate of M1 carbine parts to parkerize, a bunch of rifle and shotgun parts hanging around in various stages of completion, and due to the fact that he gave me a deep discount for doing several weapons keeps me from really being a prick about it.  I have to say, that the duracoat is holding up fine- even where the brass bounces off the side of the reciever, so he knows how to do Duracoat.

I've shot the rifle with and without the Gemtech, and I do get a little POI shift.  Strangely it is diagonal, but only about an inch between the centers of the groups.  I can live with this, as the POI shift on a Rem 700 that I have is more like a 12 inch (sporter barrel- pencil thin) POI shift.  I don't bother with the suppressor on that rifle.

Honestly, I don't know why I keep the Rem around, other than it is about 1/4 the weight of the DPMS and shoots great offhand.
