Going hunting in Texas in Feb. with a friend that lives there. What's the problem with sending my AR down in parts/ different shipments/ no ammo via. UPS or FED-X?

First question - is your friend an FFL?

Gonna have to check state laws in both states - yours and Tejas...

For most instances, not legal.  It will, however, depend on both states in that circumstance.

The legal way, from (almost) any state to (almost) any state - ship it to a local dealer at your destination.  You either may or may not have to transfer it to yourself upon arrival (fill out another 4473).  Seen that happen before.  Best bet to find out the real deal is to call a local dealer at your destination and ask them those very specific questions.

(*** I used "amost" any state on purpose - some states it just won't matter.  Don't ship anything to CA, NY, CT, MA, CO, NJ, unless you're sending it to a gunsmith there, or a manufacturer there, and directly to them as an FFL/Manufacturer.)

This sounds ridiculous, but it all deals with sending firearms across state lines, in accordance with varying state's laws.  You need to make sure you're legal about it, because the consequences just aren't worth it.

*** This post is not legal advice, and I am not a lawyer.  Just giving you information to check out so you don't wind your a$s up in the Pen.  Gen Pop would suck...

Gotta be careful about what category you're in, though.  "Traveling" with firearms is different than shipping firearms to a different state, for your use when you get there.  Big differences.  Flying on a plane with them in checked baggage is "traveling with them."  Shipping them ahead of time and flying in later isn't the same.

That's right on.  I understand the air travel process well, but wonder what happens once you get there and have to move around another state with the firearm?  Seems like that could get interesting in the "stoopider" states.  Once in the rental car......

Good points Slug. If there are any dings in the case, one would want to inspect for damage ASAP, so as to get pictures....etc. Is one likely to open a case right there in baggage claim, possibly setting themselves up for arrest or being overcome by an aggressor?

Same with the rental car situation. It's pretty obvious that you are toting around weapons and are not likely to be armed at the time. You just got there.

Then the "stoopider" states part.

I just know I won't sleep for weeks, worrying about all of these scenarios before a trip.

Ok, I am not a Cabela's lackey, but here are the pics of the new travel case. Attributes are 44" long and 15" wide. Billed as a 2 gun case and pic shows what I did to customize for travel. As stated before, 3 layers of foam. The center one, you cut and trim for your weapons. I could not find a suitable one by Pelican, at the 2 retail stores I went to. The case weighs a full 25lbs as is and loaded with the 2 weapons, is damn near 50lbs. With the wheels, it does drag easily.

That's a "cabelas brand case"? I've been wanting a nice hard case, and with traveling out west this spring with a stop in Vegas I don't wanna be walking thru the hotel with your regular run of the mill cases.

When I travel there was a special claim area. A quality case (i.e. Pelican) isn't going to "ding". If you aren't traveling with a case that can withstand the abuse, you are already setting yourself up for failure.

I've used my Pelican 1700 case as a suitcase when travelling on business a few times (internationally). Every time it comes out of the baggage claim it's either put behind the counter where the attendants are or with the oversized baggage (even though it's not oversized), also with attendants.

If you suspect damage to one of your cases, you immediately take possession of the case and segregate yourself - you take it, locked/secured, directly to their baggage office (if it's not there already), and tell them you suspect damage to your case and contents, and inform them that you want to inspect it right then, in front of them.

Proceed with contents inspection.  Anything noted, happens right there in front of them, and they take notes.  Have them write a report/statement right there, right then.

I'm no expert at this guys, and I'm not offering legal advice.  I have, however, transported and shipped alot of weapons in a past life, routinely, both militarily and as a civilian.  MIlitarily, transporting weapons on a commercial air carrier - that can be fun.  Under NO circumstances do you ever let a civilian have sole contact with your full auto rifles and any machineguns (M249, M240, etc.).  I've had some close calls with airport security (armed escorts) that start off thinking differently.  They might be law enforcement, and don't think they're civilians, but they're damn sure not military and allowed unadultered access to automatic rifles...  Couple close calls at Sea-Tac a few times, when they either didn't understand or didn't agree with that...  <lmao>

This info is all very good indeed! I don't expect this case will get damaged, dinged, even in rough handling and yes, it is branded as a Cabela's case. The picture kinda shows the part number and you are encouraged to look at it, when at their stores. I can offer better pics for it. It is their 44" case. The 37" was not suitable for my 39" rifle, but I liked it too. Square peg vs round hole? I wanted to be able to transport 2 rifles and assorted stuff and this one will allow for that. Now, to just keep the weight down under 50lbs.

There is plenty of additional room for cut out equipment.post-15445-0-08376800-1421334032_thumb.j

Stepping on it and the small stuff I have done to it so far, have passed my litmus test. I like that GPS device, idea. And all the interaction info is priceless. Even though you are not lawyers.

  • 4 weeks later...

Here's a start - dig into the regulations, and print copies of the regulations - don't print a webpage. Make sense?

http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/firearms-and-ammunition

Another comprehensive article:

http://www.wikihow.com/Travel-on-Airplanes-With-a-Gun

DO NOT USE the stupid TSA locks! You cannot - they won't let it on the aircraft with TSA locks on it.

Militarily, we always used Pelican cases and Hardigg cases. The two companies have kinda combined now. It's unpossible to fuk up a Hardigg case.

Just incase you don't believe everything you read on wiki here's the article they refer to

So I've been looking for locks for my pelican case they're all junk from what I can find searching pelican case locks, no plan in flying anytime but still reading true the regs and this post. And to my understanding a lock like this: <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" data-cke-saved-href="http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/19299295?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222228015113177&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=40881135512&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=78810994352&veh=sem%20is%20a%20no%20go%20because%20TSA%20can%20access%20it%20with%20their%20master%20key?%20But%20my%20buddy%20fly%20to%20Boston%20on%20a%20sea%20duck%20hunt%20with%20this%20exact%20lock%20(garbage%20imo)%20and%20his%20uncle%20does%20with%20the%20same%20locks%20every%20year%20since?%20So%20wtf%20is%20the%20deal?%20The%20way%20it" href="http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/19299295?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222228015113177&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=40881135512&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=78810994352&veh=sem%20is%20a%20no%20go%20because%20TSA%20can%20access%20it%20with%20their%20master%20key?%20But%20my%20buddy%20fly%20to%20Boston%20on%20a%20sea%20duck%20hunt%20with%20this%20exact%20lock%20(garbage%20imo)%20and%20his%20uncle%20does%20with%20the%20same%20locks%20every%20year%20since?%20So%20wtf%20is%20the%20deal?%20The%20way%20it" s%20explained%20above%20and%20the%20way%20i%20take%20the%20link%20i%20just%20posted%20prior%20you%20and%20only%20you%20can%20gain%20access%20yet%20he's%20telling%20me%20i'm%20wrong%20because%20he%20and%20his%20party%20all%20flew%20with%20these%20locks%20that%20have%20the%20tsa%20master%20key%20feature"="">http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/19299295?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222228015113177&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=40881135512&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=78810994352&veh=sem is a no go because TSA can access it with their master key? But my buddy fly to Boston on a sea duck hunt with this exact lock (garbage imo) and his uncle does with the same locks every year since? So wtf is the deal? The way it's explained above and the way I take the link I just posted prior you and only you can gain access yet he's telling me I'm wrong because he and his party all flew with these locks that have the TSA master key feature

Why looking at TSA locks for your gun case?  Per previous comments and TSA info, as I understand it, you cannot have your case accessible if you have a firearm in the case.  Ergo, no TSA locks.  I believe you have to declare the firearms, have the case inspected on check-in, lock the case, and take the keys with you.  Here's some TSA info:       http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/firearms-and-ammunition

Am I wrong?

Am I wrong?

Nope, you are correct.  You DO NOT GIVE the TSA bag-smashers and ramp-monkeys access to any of your firearms equipment, ever.

If you're flying firearms or ammunition, you CANNOT use TSA locks, for that very reason.  YOU are the only one with keys to your goods.  You must be present for inspection, they check it - they don't touch it - and YOU lock it back up and maintain the only set of keys, and the only access to that case.

Any TSA fukk that thinks different - you let them know that they're fucked up, and they need to study up on their own regulations.  This will be one of the only times that you can light a TSA shitbag up and get away with it, so enjoy it...  <lmao>

fornicate those things Shepp! I use masterlock m50xd locks. I don't know why but copy and paste is not working on my phone.

http://www.masterlock.com/personal-use/product/M50XD

Nevermind. Here^^^^

Now that's what I'm talking about edge, thanks!!!

Slug I'm not looking for "TSA locks" but in my search for "pelican gun case locks" or "pelican case locks" the only ones that come up are those junk ass TSA locks. Then I get in an argument with one of my good friends talking about it via text because he flew with TSA locks on his guns and I told him everything I've read has pointed to that being no bueno
