I am told that the AR-10 variants, when compared to my beloved M-14 and FAL clones, are:  More Accurate, Easier To Scope, Cheaper, Mags Are Cheaper and More Abundant, Easier To Clean, Easier To Free Float (something you can't do with the other two), Easier To Add Accessories, Easier To Change Parts -> especially the barrels, Easier To Headspace, Has Better Ergonomics, Better Gas System, More Reliable, Better Availability of Parts which also means Easier To Maintain.

I have been accused of being a heretic for confessing this elsewhere, so don't chew my buitt too much.

I'm not sure any of those point are invalid. You have to be cautious of the M1A boys. They get super cranky about any criticism of that platform. My identity doesn't come from a firearm, so I don't feel the need to defend them.

He's right about everything except maybe the accuracy part, those M1A with a match barrel are tack drivers. the Fal's are right in there too.

That's interesting. I don't think I've ever heard about impressive accuracy from a FAL. I'm guessing yours shoots well? I know the Army designated marksmen I worked around weren't super impressed with their "accurized" M14's. Maybe the civilian builds are more accurate?

My Fal is an older one with National match stamped on the barrel. it's pretty accurate, now it's not as good as the M1a.  both are as accurate and better than any of my 308 AR's. now i know they can be made to shoot well. all mine are factory rifles. I hunt with most of my AR 308's. So they are more suited for that purpose as things can be added easy.

Good to know. I didn't know that there were match barreled FAL's out there. Thanks.

For me the switch wasn't so much of a switch.  Based on my practical experience, I felt that a full battle rifle would have served us well.  A good bit of our direct contact happened just outside of the effective range of our M4s and the goat lovers knew this.   So for me it was natural based on experience to embrace the 308/7.62x51.

Well.... I've looked around and this is the place to be for the AR... I have the .308 H&K and that is all I shoot.  So, I wanted a site discussion place to share ideas and learn more about it... Like everyone else, I need primers (if you know where they are available...HELP)... but reloading is as much fun for me as the shooting part...  I like the Lake City Long Range shells as well as Norma and Lupua for consistancy so any tips about those is helpful...

Welcome to the forum.

If you haven't, you might copy and paste your post into a new thread here.

Also, feel free to start a thread about your rifle and it's details.  We like gun porn.

Other proven 308 platforms were very unergonomic and sized for guys 6'+. The reach to the forearm on FALs and HK91s requires orangutang arms and its worse when wearing gear. AR platform is far more modern and ergonomic from the standpoint of modding for a specific purpose AND doing self-gunsmithing is easier.

I built an 80% (aluminum) AR-15 six years ago and enjoyed the research, milling and drilling of something I'd never done before.

Now that I'm retired and looking for things to do, I decided on an 80% (polymer) LR-308 for the same reasons. I've finished (after much anguish of waiting for parts in the mail, ordering wrong parts, etc.) and it's on to the next project. Thinking 80% AR-15 lower and dedicated .22 upper.

Having AR-15s for a while, fun to shoot, decided to step up to the .308 platform. Purchased a factory built one a few months ago. 1st time at the range it wouldn't cycle 7.62X51 reloads, but ran .308 ones just fine. Looking into the problem now.

Wanting to build my own, but after reading a few articles on here, they aren't as simple a build as the 15s. Hopefully, by this time next year, I'll be testing my .308 build.

I happened to notice this thread while lurking. Actually there are not any MATCH, as in "accurized" FN FAL's from the factory that I have ever seen or for sale. I believe it was the late 80's when Steyr imported (before the ban) a number of FAL's that were marked "MATCH". Basically, a number of these were FAL's in the heavy barrel configuration (squad MG) much like the Israeli FALO. The accuracy of these rifles in my experience is no better or worse than a standard FAL. This one I purchased in 2010 before they became victims of rarity and inflation.

That looks like the FN FALO( hand guard and bipod) model.

The Canadian version is the FN C2a1

I did get to touch but never fire the FN C2 but was able to get trigger time on the FN C1A1 before it was deemed to scary and prohibited in Canada.

If you buy it, it will come?

Honest to god I was going to the LGS to negotiate a price for a new AR-50 and a used AR-30 last Wednesday when I was turned away at the door by the ATF, kinda spoiled the moment for me. Looks like they will still be open monday to work on that negotiating though.
