CCI BR-4 primers for AR

Greetings,
I am new to reloading and am looking to get primers but am having a hard time doing so.  I am reloading rounds for an AR15 300 blackout  and I want to avoid slam fires.  I can't find any CCI 41 OR 450 PRIMERS but I  can get some CCI BR-4 primers at the moment.  I understand these are benchrest primers? Will they be good for my application?
Thanks in advance

  • Pewpewpown changed the title to CCI BR-4 primers for AR

The BR-4 primers have the same cup thickness as the 450's and 41's (0.025").  They will work just fine for the 300 blackout, just be sure to start at the lower end of the powder range and work your way up...or down if you're loading subsonic.  If you work up a load with the BR-4, and then switch to 450's or 41's, be sure to back off your load and work back up.

We all are, right now.  Welcome to the New World Order Of Reloading, in this day and age.  Primers are hard to come by, unless you're looking for .50 BMG primers.  Those are everywhere, but nothing else is.  Expect to pay premium prices if you find something in stock.  There are no "normal-priced primers" anymore. Not for the foreseeable future.

Thanks, Joe...  :thefinger:

I just remembered something from years past. .50 BMG  primers were used to make .exploding 45 Auto cartridges, by drilling a hole in the nose of flat nose FMJ  bullets and using a small drop f JB weld to glue the primers atop a small amount of Black powder . I bought a box of 12 at a gun show. They worked  to make a large hole in the trunk of a tree when fired from my 1911 at 20 yards.

$140 a box isn't out of the question BR-4 primers these days.

I bought a box more than six months ago from Brownells, and they were $125 before Hazmat, and shipping. They also had a box limit of 1 for that product; so I couldn't buy any more to help spread the fees around.

I paid $95 per 1,000 for CCI 41 back in November when I saw some in stock (but was stuck with a two box limit). All those options at TargetSportsUSA are $120 per 1,000 (plus you have to buy 5,000); but they do have a selection... And it says free shipping.

They are in fact available if you want to pay.

My most recent CCI 41 purchase is $130 per brick of 1k.  For 5k, that price isn't out of line.  With a TS membership, that's probably cheaper.  @Matt.Cross, can you check into that and report back, brother?

Please remember... Bench Rest Primers have more brilliance than other primers !

Not really.  @JBMatt has done a metric shiit-ton of chrono data with all kinds of primers for loads.  CCI 41s come in the hottest.

Primers aren't discounted for me, loaded ammo is though. Loaded ammo is pretty much the only thing from the site that's heavily discounted for members to tell the truth, but that's pretty much all I ever bought anyways.

I didn't realize how much things changed over just a few months (yet again). I took a trip over to gunbroker after I posted; sure enough, the cheapest CCI 41s were $150 per 1,000 along with significant additional fees for shipping.

How long before we hit the $0.20 per primer mark?

I can relate, hard for me to buy components when I can get something loaded for about the same.... but I really do need to pile some up, keep waiting to see if the new American maker will have an effect or is it just a runaway train.

BR-4's are about the only primer I haven't tested.  Of all the primers I've tested in both 223/5.56 and 6mm ARC, the CCI 41's are definitely the hottest by about 20-40 fps between 2,700-2,800 fps. But their SD's aren't exactly stellar.  They're hotter, but a little less consistent, for me.

I've tested at the same time in both calibers:

Fed 205, 205M, 205MAR

Wolf

Winchester SRP, WMSRL 41

CCI 41, 450

Rem 7 1/2 Bench Rest

In my tests, I've consistently found that the CCI 450's have single digit SD's for the recipes I'm using.  The worst are the WSR and Rem 7 1/2 with SD's well into double digits.  Everything else falls in the acceptable category with Fed 205M's and CCI 41's as other good choices.

If anyone wants to send me 1K CCI BR-4's, I'd be happy to include them in my testing!  :fullauto:
