Hey AZ, The BM 308 ORC has a mid-length gas system. (BM is now owned by DPMS, you can look for DPMS parts) Really the first question is what length of Free Float Rail are you planning on getting. Do you want to cover the gas block? Put a cap on the end of the rail? or just leave it open? Its possible that the ground down FSB may fit inside a rail, but I have not tried or measured it either. Regardless, the placement of the gas block and the gas tube will remain the same, you just need to ensure the rail will go over the gas block or FSB. look at both MidwayUSA, and Brownells. Both companies have large inventories and are reasonably priced. Let me know how I can help, Jeff Fill me in on what you would like as an end result and I can get you pointed in the right direction. I agree. I wouldnt change unless you feel it necessary. Take it to the range and see how it shoots. As far as which ones if you decide to change, there are loads of them out there. The threads on that barrel are 5/8-24 TPI. The JP Tactical Compensator is JPTRE-324 http://www.jprifles.com/1.4.3_tre.php but again, there are a lot of choices out there. The adjustable gas block is JPGS-2B http://www.jprifles.com/1.4.6_gs.php but JPGS-5 is a low profile, just kinda depends on what your plans are.

20" barrel for the increased velocity. Initially the recoil was ridiculous. Added the JP adjustable gas block, and JP Tactical Compensator (Muzzle Brake) to tone it down a bit. I can shoot it all day long now, made a huge difference. Stock trigger was pretty rough so replaced it with a Geissele and love it. So much I just ordered another for my AR 15. Get it to the range and shoot it, it will tell you everything first hand. Post and tell me how it went.

Fish, The Bushmaster 308 ORC is a 16" carbine with a Mid length gas system. Bushmaster has been purchased by DPMS, and as such, thats really what the BM ends up being. Welcome Fish, I think Edgecrusher answered most of everything. I just finished putting a Bushmaster ORC together myself. Everyone here will be more than happy to assist you as you need help. If you have specific questions in regards to accronyms, or components, just post them and they will be answered. I would recommend that you spend some time looking through the forum. Ok, Got the JP Adjustable Gas Block and Muzzle Brake yesterday. Had the gunsmith lathe the shoulder a bit to index the Brake without washers, he did a very nice job. Crappy picture, but I'm too lazy to get the camera out again. Out to the range on Sunday to give her a test run.

Still trying to figure out where the regular buying stops, and the regular shooting starts. Ahhh, first one and I think I'm addicted.

I purchased another detent pin today, and will try buff and round off the sharp edge of the detent pin. I believe that edge is causing the issue with the sharp edges of the Tubbs flat spring. I'll see if rounding them of just a tad smoothes that process out any. And if not, I'll have a new one on standby. Will post the results when done.

Ok, JP adjustable gas block and JP Enterprises Bennie Cooley TactiCal Muzzle Brake are on the way and should be here by Friday. Hopefully get a chance to get it to the range this weekend and test them out.

I'm not expecting .223 recoil out of it, but it is a little ridiculous. More than the mule kick, it throws the rifle completely off target, even holding with good force, I have to search for the target to reaquire it. Going to tear it down tonight and do a good inspection.

Nice day at the range. Love the trigger! Zero play, and a super clean break. Shot some good groups with the exception of pulling a couple. Recoil is darn near unbearable. Hydraulic buffer and flat spring dont seem to have had much effect of reducing the recoil. Two failure to extracts from the factory metal mag, none from the Pmag. Ammo shot was Federal 168 grain Match. The recoil has to be dealt with, it is crazy. Maybe over gassed? Maybe an adjustable gas block would help? I would appreciate any suggestions you all have to offer. Shot 40 rounds and feel like I was kicked by a mule.

It may be flat, but that has got to be the smoothest trigger I have ever put my finger on. I'm pumped about getting it to the range.

Made an oopsie. Geissele trigger came in today. Much to my surprise it was the SD3G instead of the S3G, I ordered the wrong one..... Needless to say, its getting installed in a minute and will be at the range tomorrow. I have never used a flat trigger, hope I can get use to it.

Yeah, I dont think this is what the state had in mind when they gave me my concealed permit. Pretty heavy as well, would have a hard time keeping the drawers up.

Thanks for the info. I talked to a couple of AR builders today. They both said they have seen different shape detents. Some more rounded the block shaped. I think mine is more block shaped and may be contributing to the spring hanging up. I think I will see if I can fabricate a flat tool I can keep in the range bag. Thanks again for the info.

Absolutely will not come out. Starts to slide out, but hangs right where the buffer and spring connect. Almost like the detent is to large or too stiff of a detent spring to make it an easy process. Definitely has me baffled.

With it in the cocked position 98. I can get it past the hammer, but it will eventually get stuck on the detent. I'm going to go get it out of the safe and break it down, bugging the heck out of me.

BM originally came with the collapsable stock. Changed it out for the MAGPUL PRS and changed to full length rifle extension at that time. Its more of an issue that the buffer and spring need to be lined up exactly with the extension when they slide in, and trying to get them lined up while going over the hammer was difficult. Enough to have to take it apart to get it together. The extension is full length, the PRS fit snuggly onto the extension, buffer and spring go in, but I shouldnt have to disassemble to get them in. Guess I better dig into it a little deeper tomorrow. Plan on having it at the range Friday.

I just installed the above combo in a BM ORC 308, rifle length buffer, spring, and extension. The spring with buffer attached would not go in past the detent. It fits in the extension just fine, but as it gets to the point where the spring is connected to the buffer, there is very little wiggle room. hard to manuever it over the hammer and detent. That combined with the flat edges of the Tubbs spring it just didnt want to cooperate. I had to remove the stock and extension. Put the buffer and spring in, screw it into the receiver, then put the detent in and reassemble the rest to get it in there. Curious if anyone else has run into any of this, or is it just me. Spent 23 years in the Army with M16's and M4's, and never had any problem getting the buffer and spring in over the hammer and detent. Just a little wiggling to get it both in and out.

Will keep that all in mind. I have read several posts in forums regarding the Bushmaster trigger. Most said they were very happy with it and chose not to upgrade. Guess I will have to get it to the range and make that determination. If not, you all have given plenty of options.
