  1. Thanks for the advice. I'd been looking at the scopes below - I'll take a look at Athlons. I had toyed with buying one Leupold's CDS scopes. I have used my share of VX-3ii for sure. Leupold Patrol VX-R 3-9x40 with FireDot TMR 15.3oz 12.6" Primary Arms SLx3.5 4-14X44mm FFP Rifle Scope - Illuminated R-Grid 2B Reticle 25.2oz 13" Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44mm Rifle Scope 22oz 13.1"
  2. Finishing up an AR-10 in 7mm-08. I'll use the rifle to hunt so I want to keep the weight down. With that being said - any particular scopes popular with the community? Not looking to take any shots longer than 500 (inside 300 is more likely) yards and deer is about the smallest critter I plan to aim this one at. Regards, Mike
  3. Thanks for the advice all. I was given a set of Tekton Gunsmith Punches so I guess I'll try those out. My list currently is. https://www.plastixrevolution.net/collections/combo-smith-tools/products/multical-223-308-ar15-ar10-upper-lower-vise-blocks https://www.squirreldaddy.com/Gas-Tube-Alignment-Gage-Pin-p/sd20-196.htm?CartID=1 https://www.opticsplanet.com/real-avid-smart-bench-block.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/wheeler-ar-armorers-vise.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/wheeler-delta-ar-10-mag-well-vise-block.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/gas-block-genie-gas-block-alignment-tool-for-ar-15.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/leapers-utg-armorers-multi-function-combo-wrench.html Still trying to decide what I want to do on the torque tools. Any advice before I start spending - and presumably get beaten by my wife 🙂
  4. Thanks for the input! I'd rather buy once - can't stand bad tools. I have a 4" vice on a workbench - would you recommend purchasing the No-Mar and scrapping the Wheeler vice? Do you have specific recommendations for the torque wrench and driver/wrench?
  5. I'm getting ready to purchase equipment to assemble DPMS pattern AR's. Let me know what I'm missing or if I should scratch anything off my list please. https://www.opticsplanet.com/wheeler-delta-ar-10-mag-well-vise-block.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/wheeler-ar-armorers-vise.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/caldwell-wheeler-roll-pin-starter-set-710910.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/gas-block-genie-gas-block-alignment-tool-for-ar-15.html https://www.opticsplanet.com/leapers-utg-armorers-multi-function-combo-wrench.html

Thanks! Went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Wilson Combat 17".
  7. Hello & thanks for reading. I'm getting closer to completing my build. I'd love some advice on the remaining (or missing) components. Barrels

Really just a habit I suppose. I realized what I barrel snob I've become when I was contemplating re-barreling a new Win 70 that was holding 1" 5 shot groups. I may have issues LOL.

The 17" from Wilson is one I have on my short list. I will run .308 or .338 - probably .308 The gun could serve on any game up to and including elk. I take most of my shots under 200 yards and cap my shots at 400 unless I'm running an appropriate setup.

    Barrels

A toy more than likely 🙂 ... With that said I'll probably use it to hunt. I'm looking at lighter barrels - I want to stay under 38oz at 18"

What's the consensus on barrels for AR-10's? I've been looking at Wilson Combat and Faxon in addition to just having one made by the custom barrel shops. Any wisdom is appreciated.
  12. Hello, I'm getting ready to order parts for my first AR-10 build. I've done my share on the 15 platform but I'm a newbie on this one. Let me know if you spot any problems or areas where there's a better choice. 13. I love the 45-70. These days the only time I see 45-70's are with my Sharpes rifle. I agree recoil doesn't matter in the field but I like to practice. I have to say I'm tempted to just buy the 338 federal upper from Wilson. It's like 900 bucks right now.
