Hey friends I had some medical surgeries to deal with so after I got my AR set up according to this group helping me with the mechanics I found that JP suggested to adjust the gas block all the way in then back off 4 turns. The rifle was put on the back burner until a few days ago and shot it on my friends property just to check the mechanics. Long story short it was a little stiff at first I had to use my forward assist on the first shot but I had no issue’s whatsoever and it fires very smooth and feeds and ejects as it should. Very happy now that I know it runs. Recoil is barely more than my AR15. Very much appreciate all the patience y’all had with this Noob not knowing anything. I’ve sent many other noobs here that couldn’t figure out their 308. Many thanks, Jim K

Yeah that’s what I had planned. For some reason the directions say to start with it closed but I don’t follow that logic. I plan to open it up all the way and get some rounds through it and loosen it up while I’m dialing in my optic. I’ll close it bit by bit until the bolt doesn’t lock back and then open it up until it does and then just a bit more.

@shooterrex@99ZV5 after the 2 quarters and adding 1 more turn on the buffer tube my bolt has about 1/8-3/16” travel after the bolt catch so mechanically I think I’m set. Thanks for helping me troubleshoot this because it’s saved me hours of browsing the net and these forums for answers. Now I need to find my Allen key so I can set up my adjustable gas block and next I can go fire this beast. Surprisingly there’s not a lot of guys that actually know how to troubleshoot these and get them set up so they run like they should. I can’t wait to get out to the range!

@98Z5V I got 1 more turn on the buffer extension. I added 2 quarters and I inserted the spring and buffer. I pushed BCG into the buffer tube all the way and it appears to be about 3/16” clearance. Wondering if this seems like too much. How much clearance is the right amount?

The extension is 2a armament. It’s sold as an 8” for the AR308. I think it might have come with a spacer so I’ll look in my parts box. Otherwise I’ll use the quarter trick.

Yeah I thought about that. I’ll take the tube in to where it’s flush and I’ll file the pin slot if need be. Not quite sure how much clearance is needed but once I have the buffer tube all the way in I’ll see how far the BCG will push in and if it still hits I’ll add a quarter as some of you suggested. Really appreciate the feedback because there isn’t much available information regarding this carrier hitting the lower “ears” and what the clearance should be. I’m glad I didn’t take the rifle out and fire it without some understanding of the mechanics.

Yeah I’m Positive it’s 7 3/4” but I’m thinking there’s another 3/32 or 1/16”of threads because my buffer tube isn’t all the way forward. I did notice marks where the bolt carrier did hit the lower ears on assembly and hand cycling. The buffer tube is rated at 8” oal. The company states it is for the LR308 with the H3 buffer 3.25”

Thanks for all the welcoming comments! I took my buffer and spring out and weighed my buffer and it weighs 5.3 oz. The inside measurement of my buffer extension measures 7 3/4”. If I push my bolt carrier into the tube with the spring and buffer it does hit the lower ears. However there is a couple more threads exposed so I’m assuming I’ll be threading the buffer extension in until it’s flush or before it binds on the locating pin. It’s possible the bolt carrier won’t hit at full rear travel if I move the buffer tube further in but they make spacers for this I’m sure. I appreciate the pointers as I want a reliable smooth shooting and accurate rifle and these mechanics are exactly what I need to learn. I’ve located the #44 drill bit at the local ace hardware that I’ll be buying tomorrow.
