Forward Assist.

Well I was playing around with my rifle last night after ordering a bunch of accessories. Decided to pop the bolt assembly out. When i did i realized there are no notches in the side for the forward assist to catch in. I do have a forward assist on my upper. Whats the point of the forward assist if the bolt wont let it engage or am I missing something here? Also does DPMS test fire these before they ship them out to dealers? I purchased mine new but it has the smell of being fired before and has the look on the head of the bolt like it has been.

I believe they do fire them.

The forward assist pushes against the area of the bolt carrier where it steps up in size. No need for notches.
