  1. Well, guys, I got both of my LR 308s done this afternoon. I am very happy with the results. I got to put my MIAD grip on along with the Magpul stock. My friend the aircraft mechanic and I were able to tap the lower receiver and use the 4-40 set screws and we used red loctite. We cut the springs for the rear take-down pin to the length of the set screws - 3/16in. No problems at all. Thanks for all the very helpful hints and suggestions.
  2. here are pictures of my SIG P210-6
  3. I just purchased a SIG P210-6 pistol made originally in Switzerland. It has nothing to do with Sig-Sauer which were made in Germany. According to the serial number it was manufactured some time in 1988. When I purchased it from a dealer (a hobby for him) it was with pictures and the understanding that is was in pristine condition. I was not disappointed. In fact the reverse. When I took it apart everything looked like the proverbial "the little old lady took her car to church once a week only!" Actually it was in even better condition than that. The machining and tolerances are superb. Anyway it came with micrometer rear sights and the test target came with it. The 6 shot group showed a spread of 1.75 inches and the range was 50 meters -- that's 54.68 yards to those of us who are metric challenged. The price was approximately $1650 but is was worth every penny. From what I have seen and researched and what others have said to me, that pistol would fetch anywhere from 2400 to 3200. I am extremely pleased with this pistol purchase.
  4. Thanks for your insight. I thought of that solution myself but that would depend on how much pressure that spring still has. I will try it that way and if it is not satisfactory then I will tap and put a set screw.
  5. I just found a rifle, I have wanted for some time, on the internet. I will eventually have the action blue-printed and have the bolt re-sleeved or just buy a replacement bolt after I get the raceway in the receiver reamed out which is part of the blue-printing process. I have not decided yet. It is a Remington 700ss 5R in .300 Win Mag - it is the long action (with a 26 inch barrel) with a pretty decent trigger set a 3.5 lbs. I paid $950 for it. Even if I have all the work done on it, it will come in about a $1000 under what a custom rifle will cost and I will be able to do it at my pace as the money comes available. At the very least I see myself getting a trueing or blue-printing job done and then latter on a stock, barrel, and trigger and lastly a removable box magazine set up which will replace the cheap plastic (I believe) magazine bottom plate and trigger guard. I used to own a Remington 40XB in .300 Win Mag but I sold it for grad school. I still regret that desperate move on my part.
  6. rmart, You are exactly correct. I finally decided on a U.S. Optics SN-3 1.8-10 X 37 scope. It is more versatile and can be mounted on my LR-308s and on a bolt gun I have been contemplating. It has Mil/Mil for elevation, windage and reticle along with FFP S parallax F. Apparently they are built like tanks. I am getting the green illumination for the reticle.
  7. Hi Imschur, Yes that's it. I have been trying to decide what kind of optic to put on both my DPMS rifles. One I bought prior to the "great panic" and one during. I got both of them from R & R Arms - a good source for things DPMS I believe. I first bought the LR-308 with 24 inch SS barrel with black teflon coating and Mikulek comp in mid-2008 for about $1050 including S&H. It still sits in my safe unfired. I then put the TAC 20 on a wish list knowing I would never see one. Well I soon got a notification from R & R Arms that one came available in Dec. 31st 2008 and they were asking the pre-panic price of about $975 including S&H. Needless to day I grabbed it. I have since then put a Magpul UBR on it along with the new Armalite spring and custom carbine buffer. As you know I will put the MIAD on it soon. As for the optic I have decided on the US Optics 10x ST-10 ERGO Riflescope with Parallax III and EREK Knob for both rifles. Later on I might look into other scopes. I decided on this one because I could always put it on a bolt gun as well. I wanted one that was rugged and less complicated than the variable power telescopes that have more complicated mechanisms and more glass which tends to interfere with light transmission. It is like light traveling through different temperature zones in the sea. I am going to put the order in on Monday. I will probably go for some TPR rings.
  8. Would anyone here put an EOTech 552 with dots for different ranges (.308) on a DPMS LR-308 TAC 20 (20inch barrel with front sight post)? The new 3x magnifier on flip base (GG&G) will be added later.
  9. I would choose between the KAC 200-600m micro ($125), GG&G MAD (200-600), and the Troys which are built like tanks.
  10. Thanks for the heads-up and the descriptive explanation. I have been really busy taking grad classes and will only be doing the procedure (with the help of my airplane mechanic friend) during the coming spring break. :)
  11. imschur, Well thanks for your help. I found a source down the road from where I live: Grainger's. Or I can order one from Snap on tools for under $5.00. That is only if my friend does not have one. He is an airplane mechanic.
  12. Thanks for the heads up! Would a Home Depot have it?
  13. Thank you imschur, That is exactly the information I need! My friend has all the necessary tools and with his help I will be able to find the 4-40 set screw and tap the hole. That is going to be my solution as well. :) Anyway, a picture is worth a thousand words of description and sometimes analysis. ;)
  14. Thanks for the reply. But what I am getting at is not about the gap. I have seen pictures all over the web that shows the use of the B3 and B2 back straps on the LR 308s and the gap is minimal. The issue of a gap only comes up when the MIAD is used on an AR10 or SR25. The issue I am specifically addressing is whether the rear take down pin detent spring (which is supported by the pistol grip - as I am sure you know) is properly supported and will not work loose within the MIAD grip itself since there is no consistent ledge or "box" as in the detent spring for the fire select switch.
  15. Hello, This is my first post after my introduction. I saw that Fulton Armory offers a MIAD grip as an option on their Lite Rifle. I am wondering if their are any modifications that need to be done on the MIAD grip for the the rear take down spring of my LR 308 TAC 20. Fulton Armory does not have an email address and they mention no problems with this option. Please let me know as I am sitting on my new MIAD grip :-\ I have already added a Magpul UBR with Clint Butler's CAR 10 buffer and modified Armalite buffer spring. It is very solid when extended but wiggles very little when fully collapsed. Thanks
  16. I am glad to be able to join this group. I am very interested in the 308 platform. The thought of building a rifle is a scary proposition. The IRA-10D in DPMS configuration is my choice because of the availability of Magpul LR 20 .308 mags. The reason I use Para308 as my username is because I served in the 82nd Airborne Division for 3.5 years. I was very proud to receive my naturalization while I was in HHC, 2/504th PIR. I am also a member of www.Armyparatrooper.org where old and new (active duty) paratroopers meet. The reason I mention that is because I did a write-up on a tool that I had Ned Christiansen modify for me. Just google "MOACKS III" and follow the link to the article on the armyparatrooper web site. My idea was to use a collar so that one can stake the gas key of AR 15/M16 rifles when the collar is on the tool and when the collar is taken off the gas key of the SR25/DPMS LR 308 can be properly staked. This tool is for making sure that gas key bolts are properly staked or repairs and maintenance can be made in the field. I just thought that having two separate tools would be a hassle. My only objective is to have this combo tool available to the troops out in the field so that rifles that are out of commission can be repaired in the field. Ned does not manufacture and sell this MOACKS III version of the tool to the public yet. This is not to sell the tool on this site, my sole purpose was to point to a useful tool that I had a hand in redesigning even though I am at present a Ph.D. student in History and ancient and medieval languages (Latin, Greek, and Arabic). Now you know about me. I look forward to hearing from you all.
