Could be. All I know is that it was a serious bummer when it broke but Armalite replaced it with no questions asked which was good. Hopefully the new one will not do that. If it does I may just go with a single stage trigger which looks to have a beefier hammer overall. That hammer in the linked post had the same thin area in the design but the top part of the hammer appears to be a different shape than the Armalite one.

Well changing the part took maybe two minutes with my Glock tool to push out the pin and little needle nose to handle the D-ring without flopping it into the carpet with my butterfingers. Here you can see the differences in the mold used pretty clearly. Since I had the real camera out for once I decided to use some extension tubes and see if I could get some real decent close-up shots of the break. This is the results, pretty cool looking if nothing else: What is clear in these photos that wasn't in my not so great phone pics is that the hole clearly went up into the top of the hammer as well. With any luck I will have time to put a few rounds through it this weekend to test it out.

Yes, I know, old topic but I just thought I would post an update. I did call Armalite back in January but I think I got the wrong extension and someones voicemail saying they were out of the office until the 22nd. I was pretty busy and decided to call back later and well, life happens, I got sidetracked and it became one fo those cases of when I remembered i had to I couldn't and when I did have the time I never thought of it. Until last week when I called and used the extension listed on their website for RMA's etc. I got right through and a very friendly lady happily took my name and address and said she would get a new hammer right out to me. It arrived today... Not THAT is service. Two thumbs up for Armalite there. Now I just have to put it in. I do note the mold is different than it was with mine and I can't help but wonder if what happened to me might be part of why. There are notably indents in the side of the new one that weren't in the original. Who knows? All I know is that with any luck in a few hours I will have a running AR-10 again. :)

It is a two stage and I have to admit I actually like the trigger that was in it. I was not looking to swap the whole thing because of that.

Yup I do plan to call Armalite. It's just been crazy this week work-wise being the end of year so that had to come first. So I will later this week or early next. What I was really wondering is if there was something short of a complete Timney unit that I could replace it with a non MIM part. As for MIM I am aware of the issues people have against it. I have plenty of things with a lot of rounds through them that have MIM parts though. However this issue does point out the potential issue with them. I think a bubble inside a hammer forged piece of steel is a lot less likely. That being said in general I have never had an issue with them until now. It is the original part that came in the rifle new. So I am sure it's factory Armalite. BTW this is no slam on Armalite either. Every Mfr. has some small amount of bad parts get through. I have had no issues with any of my Rugers or my Kimber both of which take a beating in some circles for the use of MIM parts. Others however have. Nobody is perfect. I was just wondering if there was a direct swap out forged part that was maybe heavier than the stock. For example if I bought an AR-15 one would it work in this rifle?

Well I took her out to the range again this past weekend for a much overdo range trip but less than a mag into it, 15 rounds to be exact, she suffered a catastrophic failure. Problems seemed to occur in the previous couple of rounds as it started to have ejection issues. The previous round would be stove-piped out the side with the next round almost in the chamber. This was annoying and it was something that had NEVER happened before. In fact the AR-10 had previously experienced zero functional failures. Then when I went to fire round 16, nothing. Not even a click. Clear the round and chamber another... same thing not even a click. Remove the mag and clear the firearm and try to dry fire... nadda... nothing.. So I open it up to find the hammer broken in half at the weakest point. Now this rifle has less than 500 rounds through it so I seriously didn't expect this. It clearly looks like it broke because of a defect in the metal. It would seem to be a molded or cast part with an air bubble at probably the worst place or it to happen. Now I haven't called Armalite yet and I wouldn't be surprised if they send me a replacement part for free. However in looking at the stock part vs my AR-15 the hammer is not only molded it's a lot thinner and lighter than the one in the AR-15. So I am wondering if anyone knows if there is an aftermarket hammer that is a direct swap out part that would work in an AR-10. For those interested this is what I found when I opened the rifle up:

Why thank you mrraley I will definitely keep that in mind. My luck in finding mags improved as if by magic too. That very day I ordered the one from Brownells I saw the place that purports to cost less than ground had them for $30 and change each so I ordered 2 more. By morning they were sold out again. I only wish I could afford more but I am up to four now and that's a decent starting place I think. Thanks again to everyone. :)

Yeah maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the suppressor as IF I do that it's going to be a ways off. I do eventually want one but I want one for my 5.56 first and they aren't exactly cheap. My main purpose was simply to make it so I can change the muzzle device on this rifle. I think the advice to call Armalite is probably the best and when I have the money I will likely do that. I have to be honest int he past few weeks I have considered trading this rifle in for something that is a little easier to find mags for but I managed to find one this weekend at the gun show in Greenville and I found some online since so that's no longer an issue. I know someone posted a bit back a link to Brownells I think it was saying they were in stock but I didn't have any money and then when I did the 20's were gone and I prefer them for the .308. They are back in stock there as of this morning BTW if anyone is interested. I ordered a second as soon as I saw it. Nonetheless I took the AR-10 and the new mag to the range yesterday and I was only reminded why I love this rifle. So she's definitely staying in the family. Unfortunately I was also reminded why I want to take that brake off. I always feel like people are leaving or annoyed because this thing generates its own weather system every time I fire it. It blew my Pepsi bottle off the side of the bench and it rolled out in front of the firing lane. It works great at its job of reducing recoil. It also cheeses off people nearby when they feel the blast wave with every shot. I'd like to fix that part thus my want to replace the comp/break with a simple flash hider. A suppressor for it is at this point still a someday dream.

I think I would like the option of having whatever I want on it and to be able to change that as I see fit. Eventually the idea of a supressor appeals to me as they are legal here. As for hearing protection, they've always been wearing it. That doesn't stop the flinch this thing causes, you feel it right through you on either side. From behind it's not noticable at all. In fact I thought the reaction of people next to me the first time I shot it was nuts.... Until I let my son sit there and shoot it and I was off to the side. THEN I realized how much of a bark this thing really has.

While I don't see anything at the 6-O'clock position really I am betting you're correct and it's just finished over well. It was my impression that in NY they had to be pinned and welded but I just couldn't see where. It will be a little bit before I can send it in. The move has pretty well emptied the bank accounts and it's going to take a bit to recover. Still so glad I did it though and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Does anyone know how much this will cost? I know I will find otu when I call but I am not going to waste their time until I can actually do it. I will likely order myself some normal capacity mags for it at the same time when that time comes.

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I visited. Life's just been very busy for me, but I diugress... the real reason for my post. When I bought my AR-10 I lived in NY. After the foolishness that took place there is January I set out to once and for all correct that problem. I now live several hundred miles south of NY. So my question is: My AR-10 was bought in NY and as such I don't believe I can just unthread the muzzlebreak that came on it stock and replace it with a flash hider or any other device that is now legal where I live now. Personally I don't mind the mizzlebreak at all, however it has NEVER been real popular with anyone shooting within two benches beside me at the range. Is there a way to remove this thign without damaging the barrel and replace it with a flash hider or simple thread cover type thing?

I will measure it but it does seem to line up real close to my LMT AR-15 with a Middy gas system. It's not apples to apples though because the LMT is a free float quad rail MRP platform.

Unfortunately living in NY leaves me with few options I feel comfortable with. It's ludicrous but I don't want to spend time or lose my ability or legally own a firearm over it. I just have to deal with it until I can manage to move.
