Thanks for the information. I did not want to take a chance on messing up the BCG. With this information I should be able to get the job done. <thumbsup> -

Fulton Armory BCG Disassembly

My rifle is finished except for some accessories (iron sights, rail mount sling attachment). I need to check the head space and have the gauges to do it. How do I separate the bolt from the carrier so I can remove the ejector. The firing pin appears to be held in by the firring pin retainer with a screw on the right side of the carrier holding it in. I assume you unscrew the screw and the retainer will punch out releasing the firing pin. Do I push the bolt all the way in the carrier and pry the bolt carrier cam pin out with a flat head screw driver? When I push the bolt into the bolt carrier the cam is in the same position as it would be if it was turned for removal in a regular AR. No turning necessary. This BCG is not like the ones in AR assembly videos. Thought I would ask before I got into it. <munch>

Two Questions
Bullseyeshooter replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to add a cheek riser to the list. I have been using risers for quite a while with success. I did not want the DPMS upper that had a riser built in though. My build was inspired by the LMT.308 Modular Weapon System, and the SWAT article I found here on this site. With that said, I went with the Magpul CTR stock instead of the Magpul PRS stock. The cost savings also enabled me to buy another part . <thumbsup> -
Two Questions
Bullseyeshooter replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Thanks for the great information. The information on this site has helped a lot on this build. Pictures will be posted when the build is complete. I only need a muzzle break/Comp, rail mount sling adapter and a set of head space gauges. Should have it finished some time next month. So far the build includes: DPMS Lower (I assembled) DPMS Carbine Tube, spring and Buffer Tec AR-.308 Shorty Collapsible AR-Restor Magpul CTR® Carbine Stock – Commercial-Spec Model DPMS Upper (Assembled) Fuller Armory chrome Bolt Carrier Group Barrel, 18.5", .308 AR, Medium Weight, 1x10, Stainless, Match Quality, FA by Criterion Gas Block, f/Varmint or Match Rifle, Compression Fit and gas tube DPMS Quad Rail Magpul Rail Covers Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Matte BDC Leaper’s riser for the scope Harris Bi pod -
I know there is a post to cover the first question but I cannot find it. How much torque should I use on a DPMS Quad rail barrel nut? I thought I read somewhere hand tight then 30 foot pounds then 40 foot pounds then adjust for the gas tube. Second question I got the Barrel, 18.5", .308 AR, Medium Weight, 1x10, Stainless, Match Quality, FA by Criterion barrel. While I am going to use it for target shooting I feel like I should Duracoat it flat black to make it more tactical. What do you think? <munch>

Yankee HIll Tool
Bullseyeshooter replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Thanks for the advice. That reminds of what a gunsmith told me about the castle Nut. Hand tight and then wrench it I/8 of an inch more. <thumbsup> -
Yankee HIll Tool
Bullseyeshooter replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Thanks for the post. One question. How do I know how much torque to put on the barrel nut when not using a torque wrench? As tight as I can manually? Buy the way this site has been extremely helpful in my build. I have everything to complete the build now except a muzzle break and head space gauges. I will have to back track on the trigger group latter. <thumbsup> -
My build is progressing. I just got in the DPMS Quad Rail for the A3 upper receiver. A post here said it was made by Yankee Hill for DPMS. The quality is good, its the right height for the A3 receiver and it screws on fine. The Jam nut affirms it is Yankee Hill. I got a Yankee Hill installation tool but it is a little off and will not fit in the barrel nut. Two pins fit but one is slightly off. Anyone have an Idea of what to do or another tool that will do the job? <munch>

DPMS 308 BCG
Bullseyeshooter replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Fulton got the parts in and I got a complete BCG from them. Now for a barrel. Looking at a 16 inch or 18 inch. I will probally get it from Fulton. I am going to wait a bit and see if they get a 16 inch in. The nice thing about building it piece by piece is I get to research each part and it spreads out the cost. -
Criterion Barrels has on their site that they offer the 308 barrel in 16 inch. 308 Match and 6.5 Creedmoor chambers •16.1", 18.5", 20", 22", and 24" lengths •Chrome moly, parkerized •Stainless steel, in the white •Available chrome-lined with finished chamber Buy from Fulton Armory I contacted Fulton Armory and they said they did not know when they would get more. Their web site does not list them. Brownells has it listed on their site but says they are discontinued. I am kinda interested in a 16 inch carbine length 308 seeing the Brits. went with one. Anyone know anything about the barrel and future availability? <munch>

Barrel Nut / Free Float Tool
Bullseyeshooter replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Thanks, I think that will have to be the one. I was hoping for something more versatile but it is what it is. Thanks for the confirmation that this one is the one to get. -

Looks like it will do only Arma Lite AR-10. Does anyone know if this will this one work on DPMS 308 Upper build. I am looking for a wrench I can use a torque wrench with. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=24190/Product/AR-15-M16-AR-STYLE-308-ARMORERS-WRENCH <munch> -
DPMS 308 BCG
Bullseyeshooter replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Fulton Armory has extractors on order so no complete BCGs for a couple of weeks. What do you think about a DPMS chrome bolt carrier and a JP EnhancedBolt™ combination? <munch> -
I know this subject must have been asked but I am in the middle of a 308 build and am not sure which way to go. I like the idea of a 308 carbine. Better penetration power and can make the long shot out to 300 yrds when needed. The Brits went with this idea in their purchase of the LMT LM308 MWSE. Does anyone have the 16 inch barrel and how are your results? I read the article on line about shorter barrels of 18 to 20 inch barrels. I am looking for MOA shooting from 100 to 300 yrds. Is there that much difference between 16 and 18 inch barrels? Thanks. <munch>

Thanks for the information. <thumbsup> -
Anyone know when some more DPMS 308 Bolt Carrier Groups (BCG) will be available? Does Fulton Armory's BCG allow for the forward Assist and dust cover on the DPMS Upper? I saw a post that said they do not. <munch>
