  1. That's what I think too, but i would rather have the 18. Eric
  2. Thanks, you know I debated over just getting the 16 incher Rainier had in stock for a few hours actually. I doubt I will be shooting 800 yards with it so that is why I went with the SASS. Actually I am still debating on the 16 since its not too late to get it and just return the SASS and gas block. Thanks, Eric
  3. I will get photos as I put it together. I was actually surprised when I called them to check to see if they had a gas block for it and the guy on the phone was like yes we actually have one that will fit that barrel and is replacing the 100 dollar unit that they used to sell. Eric
  4. Ok well after a few weeks of reading and getting up to speed on the 308 platform I purchased all my parts yesterday, well at least I hope I did. Here is the breakdown. Mega upper and lower Rainier Arms RA10 X11 DPMS SASS 18 inch barrel with low profile gas block and Smith Vortex flash hider. Turns out DPMS is making a 20 dollar "new" version low profile gas block that fits this barrel. Midlength gas tube DPMS bolt and carrier, complete DPMS parts kit, but I am gonna swap out my RRA NM trigger since I have a few laying around Carbine length buffer with CTR stock and MOE grip, again laying around. I have an extra set of Troy pop up sights until I find a nice "mid" priced scope for it. I wanted a Youngs carrier but that will have to wait as when I talked the wife into building this rifle I assured her it would be under 1500 and so far I am about 1300 so I feel pretty good. Any ideas or opinions. I know the DPMS barrel is not the lightest around but I read good reviews on it. I wanted a Rainier Arms 18 incher but they are sold out so unless I can find a "used" one Im gonna try the DPMS and if I can't live with it I will sell it. Thanks, Eric
  5. Sorry I just reread my original post and I know I was talking about the mil spec tube but I was meaning the length cause I know that some of the buffer tubes are longer. I am going to be running a carbine length AR-15 tube. I just picked up the dpms 308 buffer and spring. I am using a dpms bolt carrier, bolt, and SASS barrel. I know it's heavy but rainier didn't have the select barrel in stock and with an expected arrival in late Jan to feb I didn't want to wait that long. Thanks again for the help, Eric
  6. I looked and didnt find exactly what I was looking for so I thought I would toss the idea out there. Thanks for any help. I am buying the parts now to do my Mega build and I only want to buy parts one time. I am wanting to use a Mil Spec carbine buffer tube on the build for stock selection and to keep me from buying a bunch of parts for only one rifle. I was reading the H3 buffer could be used with the armalite spring. But on Mega's website they recomend a buffer that is almost 100 bucks and it doesnt say if it is for Mil Spec of commericial peices. Can someone clear this up for me please on what buffer and spring I should buy for the Mil Spec tube. Thanks, Eric
  7. Hello, I am an LEO from TX, been working in the field for over 14 years and couldnt see myself doing anything else. Currently a patrol supervisor and SWAT team member. I do all the maintenance and service for the dept issued firearms including our AR rifles. Also firearms and tactics instruction for the dept and other agencies. Found this forum through a google search for 308 ar parts for an upcoming build. This forum has been very informative and really given me some great (pricey) ideas. Now all I need to do is convince the wife unit that I need to pull the trigger and add another firearm to my extensive collection.
  8. Yes, I spent some time in the Army but now do LE full time, well for the past 14 anyways.
  9. Thanks for all the welcomes. I am actually looking at the Mega set and picking up a DPMS barrel for it and the gas block of course. Then a BCG and use some of my AR parts I have laying around to finish the lower and getting a nice FFT and calling it good. I think I can get out at a good price and build it "kinda" the way I want it.
  10. Oh I have several LaRue items and like them but honestly their rifles are a bit out of my ballpark, even with several part times, the wife would not let me spend that kind of money on one. Maybe I need a new work rifle?
  11. Just dropped in to say hello from TX. I am looking to pickup or build a .308 based AR in the very near future. I own several 5.56 versions in different forms and my dept armorer on the 5.56 weapon system. Just got to figure out if it is best to buy and "add" on or just start from scratch and use some of the umpteen parts I already have to aid in the build. So far its been very informative and I have leared allot.
