  1. That Federal Fusion at 150 grains is a great deal for a very good hunting bullet at $23.50 per box 20. It's a bonded soft point that's going to expand quite a bit and pretty much stay in one piece. Personally, I think it's the best value for loaded .308 hunting ammo on the market that's commonly available just about anywhere. Every WalMart seems to have it. I'd stay away from Match Bullets or Military Ball or steel case Russian stuff for the actual hunting part. My DPMS Gen2 with 16 inch barrel actually groups best with 168 grain match bullets at 200 yards, but in the brush I would think the slightly lighter recoiling 150grain would be better for the fast follow-ups. Also, the lighter bullets typically have a shorter Cartridge Overall Length, which makes them feed and eject better than the heavier longer cartridges in an AR. About the last thing you need is to be stuck in thicket with a pissed off boar charging you with a pack of pit bulls in hot pursuit and a stuck case in your rifle ....
  2. Oh, my bud's 6.8 SPC AR-15 cracked his bolt near the cam pin hole. Seems like hollowing out an mil spec 5.56 bolt face for 6.5 and 6.8 diameter ammo casings weakens it - glad he caught it during a routine cleaning after our range outing last week ! Scary part of it is that he isn't very thorough about cleaning - he threw his BCG into my sonic cleaner for five minutes just for curiosity's sake about the sonic cleaner and he had quite the surprise.
  3. IMHO those Barnes 150gr TSX copper triple shock should be ideal for hogs. 2900 fps and a modest recoil. I'd almost be tempted to use a red dot over a scope...
  4. I hear you on the accuracy. I compared Hornady 150gr FMJ-BT w/cannelure set in prepped LC brass set @ 2.700 COL with NATO LC M-80 ball on the bench @ 200 yards and was frankly surprised at the performance difference - significantly tighter groups and fewer flyers with the reloads.
  5. You still can't beat 5.56 for INEXPENSIVE high power All-American fun. I bring both AR's to the range.
  6. The .308 is just the cat's ass in terms of reloading payback. I use Lake City Brass. The smallest payback is against bulk M-80 - where I save 25 cents per round. Much faster reloading return as compared to 5.56. With an AR, it is just so easy to burn through rounds at the range !
  7. Ok, that makes perfect sense now. Noveske just reintroduced the 12.5" Leonidas N6 - big demand. The 12.5" SBR in .308 makes sense.
  8. Every ballistic metric for a Noveske 12.5 Leonidas .308 or a Patriot Arms 12.5 in .308 at 500 yards would be so superior to a 12.5 300AAC supersonic. No comparison - and with terrestrial factors like wind it just gets worst for 300AAC.
  9. Please define "authority". No Travis Haley video links please. At 500 yards the .308 is superior in every respect to the .300 AAC supersonic.
  10. That would be my "just won the lottery" gun buy. That, maybe a NEMO, and if Desert Tech ever gets the DT MDR done. https://deserttech.com/html/product_overview.php?product_id=4&load=product_overview Oh, and I'll need three of those IOR Valdada 40mm tube scopes at $3700 a pop.
  11. Guys run Aimpoints on Pistols at present - and the Aimpoint is what PA has copied...
  12. "Now, after what you've said, which seems like an insult to all Primary Arms optics... How many of them do you own, and how many of them have failed on you?..." I own two Primary Arms MD-FGB Red Dot sights. One on a Glock 41 (45ACP long slide) failed miserably due to the shock load (according to PA's post-mortem) and one on a Ruger 10-22 works just peachy. I do understand that their magnified scopes do have a following and appear to be a value. I run Leupold VX-6's on my personal 556 (1-6x) and 308 (3-12x) AR's. I also have seen happy Vortex owners at my Gun Club.
  13. Yep, it's 150 gr FMJ BT with a cannelure
  14. Warning, RANT. There are SO many guys out there who waste their entire range day screwing around with cheap scopes that won't hold a zero, they drift from zero after 20 rounds, or they won't zero to begin with. Frustration and disappointment - not fun to experience or watch. And IMHO, if you hunt, wounding an animal inhumanely because you topped off a Ranier Arms Shilen match barrel with a $250 piece of crap glass is avoidable. Yes, with an AR-15, you can get by with a $150 red dot from Primary Arms. Please, I beg of you, if you go down the .308 road, budget at least $750 for the quality of scope that will allow you to take full advantage of the ballistic capabilities of your platform, that has the internal build quality to take the recoil, and that will be actually pleasant to look through. In the $750 range there are some great options from Vortex and Leupold. Just do it, and don't be a female cat about it either. It's a .308 for Christ's sake. Rant over.
  15. Shot this nice group @ 100 yards yesterday at DeSoto Gun Club using my rucksack as a rest. Fully prepped Lake City NATO Brass, Hornady AMAX 168gr pill, 41gr Alliant AR Comp, COAL 2.8300". FWIW, both my DPMS Gen2 Recon and my brother-in-law's SIG 716 have 16" barrels in 10 twist that really seem to do best with those 168 to 175-ish grain range bullets. We shot Honady 150 gr FMJ all day long messing around with clay pigeons on the berm, but when we really want to put down a group, we whip out our magic box of 168gr AMAX's.
