  1. Is anyone aware of a source for the clamshell style receiver fixture for the AR SR LR type rifles, would like to own one if their available.
  2. Wow... Please do not take this personally. The manner in which you asked this question sets off red flags. Your knowledge of headspace and the way different types of actions lockup and unlock before the cartridge is fired and after it is fired is very limited. Your going to get yourself hurt or worse yet someone else. This is very blunt.. you cannot check headspace on the first virgin shot out of any firearm with casings new or once fired. You have to know what your headspace is before you pull the trigger. There are different techniques using new or fired cases to check headspace, usually in the course of setting up reloading dies. There are other reason also, that I'm not going to get into. Headspace gauges are Not Expensive or Hard to Obtain. A catastrophic failure is horrible. I've seen 3, they all required immediate medical attention to the face, eyes hands, and arms. All on semi-auto M1A's, exact cause unknown. On this forum it is understood were talking about building and fixing Semi-Auto's on the AR platforms. This is how I know, you really do not understand headspace or how Semi-Autos unlock upon firing, and what happens when the trigger is pulled. Semi-Autos have a very violent cycle of operation. Once the round is fired, and that bolt starts to unlock, nothing is going to stop the cycle of operation. The kaboom happens when the bolt is maybe half way back, it then splits the aluminum receiver open like peeling a banana. Guess what.. that is where your face is. Listen and believe me,.... these rifle are not like a Bolt Rifle that lock up like a vault when you close the bolt. There is a nice picture of a catastrophic failure a few posts up from here, look at it and ponder for a few minutes. You have received good advice by other members believe it. Buy yourself a set of headspace gauges GO and NO-GO for 308 Win and the 7.62x51 Nato if that is what your building, they are different. If you buy a barrel online in today's world in REF to the AR platform in .308 or 223 you have no idea if you have a SAMMI chamber or a Nato chamber. I do not care what is stamped on the barrel, it can be stamped 308 Win and have a 7.62x51 chamber in it, they are two different animals. I offer this.. buy the gauges send me a PM, you can call me, we can talk for hours on the phone if necessary, about the proper way to use the gauges to measure headspace and why we use them. This knowledge will far exceed the cost of the gauges, This knowledge was priceless for me many years ago, when a gentleman named Boots Obermeyer (Obermeyer Rifled Barrels) took time out of his life to help me understand it in depth, and the reasons for doing so. Regards
  3. Hmm... if I have to go out and get a real job to purchase my medication, I'm not going to be happy.
  4. That 1st gen matrix setup sounds like it became a nightmare for you. I have a dim view of DPMS based on problems with AR15's back in the 90's, but that is now 25 yrs ago, have things improved now that its 2020. Fulton Armory I have nothing but good to say about them bought alot of stuff from them, always pleasant to deal with.
  5. Well yes... thats the way I'm leaning. 16 inch barrel, m4 barrel pattern, shoot 125 grn bullets at mouse fart velocities, for my daughter and daughter-inlaw to shoot.
  6. Well yes..... but my LGS has become a very good friend, over the years, as done me a lot of favors. I don't mind paying the 35 dollar transfer fee he charges. I've always gotten it back 10 fold in use of a mill, lathe, specialty tools that I can borrow or use. He just put 2 sets of Bomar's, actually now Kensight's on 1911 slides for me at no charge. Regards
  7. 95% correct, the other worry I have is money. I can't make it fast enough to buy medication for my gun disease. Politicians well, I'll keep my thoughts to myself, they are not kind thoughts. Yes rust is a big no no. Regards
  8. Which low profile receivers are you comfortable with, as far as a build goes ?
  9. My Aero Precision works flawlessly, I like it alot. I have maybe 200 rds through it, and 100 yd zero on it. It is just under a 1inch rifle, I did shoot several 5 shot groups in the 7's. The weather here is bad, cold damp and windy. Later this week I want to shoot it at 300 yds F class style and see how it goes. But alas.. I have become a fair weather shooter not caring for outside temps below 80*. I really like the Aero Precision Receivers, everything I bought went together as expected, having no problems with assembly or function. Brownells has Aero Precision Lowers on sale at 99 bucks, unless the sale as ended, and DPMS is not even a consideration. I'm not familiar with other brands in the low pattern worth buying, with out doing some research. Regards
  10. OH... great, now I started an argument. The reason I asked is, I just finished a Aero Precison in 308win. I want to start a third build and trying to decide whether to go with a high pattern or a low pattern. This gun disease is just horrible.
  11. 2 part question 1) Which version is becoming the most popular as far as sales are concerned low pattern or high pattern on complete rifles. 2) What the builders prefer. The hIgh pattern or the low pattern upper receiver. Regards
  12. Well I was at my local gun shop at the indoor range shooting on Weds, and a used CMMG AR-9 caught my eye. Well I made a cash offer and while filling out the paper work, the Manager was talking to the Owner explaining the need to stop inventorying the XD lineup, that even with a minimum markup, they do not sell. Customers will rent one to try it out at their range, but end up buying from a different manufacturer. I have never owned one, and have never shot one. I really do not have a opinion on them good or bad. The circles that I hang out in nobody as one, nor are they discussed. If you can get a great deal on one, like the way it looks and the way it shoots why not. Rent one, put a few boxes through it and see if you like it. If it shoots straight and works W/O any malfunctions, half of the problem is solved. For me, as long as it shoots straight, and works all the time, every time I would carry one if it was my only option at that time. If your on a tight budget it could be a good way to go. Like a broken record,... for me it has to shoot straight and work all the time every time. Springfield Armory is a very reputable company to deal with. I had a close friend that worked for Springfield as a Rep for approx 10yrs, then went over to Glock. Between my son and I we have at least 10 Springfield 1911's and several M1A's. If your apprehensive about the Xd's go rent one or borrow one and see if you like it before you buy it. Which version are you looking at, and what is the price? Hopefully other members here actually have a first hand opinions to offer on the XD lineup. Regards
  13. WTT........ Armalite AR-10 308 bolt, for a DPMS pattern bolt. My Armalite bolt has approx 150-200 rd on it.
  14. Okay thankyou......... I will need some/alot of moral support then.
  15. I know what you mean. This is actually a disease this gun stuff, and it gets worse the older you get
  16. With out a doubt the Larue would be a lot of trigger for the money. The Geissele closer to the Jewel trigger in application.
  17. This is good info my intent is slow fire prone with some rapid fire prone. i think I know how this is gonna end up, 1 of each.
  18. Quite a price difference between the two of them, after making a quick comparison. I'll have to do some homework ref these two.
  19. Nice thanks.... Geissele or Larue any reason to buy one over the other ?
  20. Really;.. I'm not a hardcore clay bird shooter but do shoot maybe 1000rds a year for skeet. Never heard of the release triggers being used or even been part of a conversation involving release triggers. Well I guess thats what happens when you live in a small bubble with bolt rifles.
  21. Now thats interesting, did not know that was allowed for ATA, had to look up PITA, I do not have a clue what Elks Competition is.
  22. No...., that actually is called a "release trigger" of European origin I think. Normally a rules violation not allowed here Stateside. Shot a single shot Hammereli 22 target pistol a few rounds decades ago that had a release trigger. Extremely strange, when we always pull the trigger to make it go bang, instead of pulling it then releasing it to make it go bang. Regards
  23. Yes.. these are remarkable people giving so much of their time and knowledge to shooters and the clubs. I was fortunate, when I started shooting NRA Hi-Power, Colonel Sam Burkhalter from AMTU, and Boots Obermeyer took be under their wings. The knowledge they shared and the time given to promote shooting and the manner in which they conducted themselves is simply priceless. Regards
  24. Oh nothing to be sorry about. I new the question, was gonna raise questions for some. Who never heard of these terms. Regards
  25. Well... yes I do shoot clays (skeet) in the winter months, not very well through. But they have a warm club house and they serve beer and pizza. I use a plain ole Remington 1100 20ga, improved/cylinder with a nice trigger, and again not doing it very well.
