  1. The velocity does mean something to me, I've played with short barreled rifles before and they are inherently less accurate and slower. Not saying that a short gun can't be accurate, my 16 in .338 shoots sub moa at 100, but it does make a difference. There's a reason pistols won't group like rifles, and most precision long range guns come in 26-30 inch setups. I have a 24 inch barrel .308 bolt gun that will shoot the same factory loads as my friends 20 inch brush gun about 250 fps faster out of the muzzle. Now imagine that difference with the loss of gas from this gun, there's the possibility of losing feet of elevation at these 1000-1500 ranges I'm hoping for out of the gun.
  2. I'll definitely look into Elfman and Luth. Do you feel like you lost much velocity with a 22 inch on a gas gun? My primary concern with building an AR over a bolt gun isn't comfort or accuracy, it's actually how much velocity you'll lose with a shorter barrel and losing gas. As most factory rounds are tested out of a bolt gun with 24+ inch barrels. A couple hundred fps or so makes a massive difference in reaching long distances. Also weight isn't the biggest factor In the world. This will be a primarily stationary/benchrest gun and will almost always have a bag or bipod under it. If it ever sees a carrying/hunting situation it will just be to to have fun and maybe try poking varmints at stupid long ranges. Obviously I'd rather not have a 25 pound piece of artillery to carry around with me but weight isn't a deciding factor for me if it means getting a better product.
  3. Awesome stuff thanks. I actually looked at Deadshot for a while building the cannon last year, but backed out for same reason as you... absolutely no reviews out there. I've got a little better budget than the 338 did because I'll have graduated in a month and I'm in no rush to get this done. Ideally I'd like to have a blueprint laid out and some components before Black Friday and the holidays to catch deals. I've always been told that Proof Research is the gold standard for building any precision firearm and they make 2 steel barrels (22 and 24in @ 7.5 twist) and 1 of their notorious carbon fiber barrels (also 22 @ 7.5) Barrel I feel is the foundation, and absolutely no.1 priority obviously for a build like this, the rest is icing on the cake. Anyone have experience making precision gas guns with PROOF? Is it worth the premium price? And is carbon fiber the way to go even though its a throat punch to the wallet 😂? On the reloading side of things. I have reloaded hundred of rounds of 6.5, 25-06, 204, 308, and more but I have never played around with turning necks for the brass. I clearly need to learn if I have any hope of shooting more quality ammo in my 338 cause there's zilch on the shelves. I have looked at people playing with the 115 grain berger VLD with massive success. But most say you need certain materials to reload them I'm unfamiliar with, also those heavier bullets may not want that 7.5 twist. Still looking for suggestions on trigger assembly. Always been a "buy the gun, adjust the stock trigger down, and blame yourself if something went wrong" guy so I've got basically no knowledge on this topic. Happy to hear what you guys like. And finally furniture. adjustable cheek pad and maybe a more vertical, egonomic grip would go a long way in making this rifle that much more fun to shoot so anyone have experience on that front? Thanks again for the help
  4. Well I don't know if you guys remember me but I was the college student wanting to build a .338 federal as my first AR-10 last year and y'all helped me right much. I check in from time to time lurking around seeing what you guys are discussing but now I have another rebuild in mind I wanted some opinions on before I kicked it off. I love my .338 fed and took 2 deer with it this season but my other love is hearing steel ring at long ranges. I'm considering starting up my next build with some 1000 yard dreams. I'm fairly set on the 6mm creedmoor as it outperforms most other typical AR cartridges in ballistic coefficient and velocity. Anyone have suggestions on starting my first semi-auto long range build? Open to anything from triggers and bolts, to barrel manufacturers and muzzle devices, and anything in between. Interested In what y'all have to say. PS here's some pictures of my .338 build and buck harvested (neck shot at 180) you guys helped me out with so much. Thanks again - Jacob
  5. Both say that they fit gen-1 dpms 308 style, but I will contact them directly to make sure, I feel like its probably not the first time they've been asked 😂
  6. we have a range that goes to 700, obviously im not looking for that kind of shooting but we do push our bolt guns out there pretty often and I would mind trying some 300-400 groups for $h!ts and gigs
  7. Ok, ill probably stick with 18" and under pick up whatever becomes available first. And I do handload, but I've never loaded .338 federal only .204 ruger, .308, and 7mm mag.(obviously its my first .338). Id love to put together a solid load with the 230 ELD-X I have a lot of experience and confidence with that line. plan on experimenting with it for sure. My current list (subject to change) : Completed Lower: TN arms Co AR-308 https://tnarmsco.com/complete-ar-308-lower-receiver/ M5 Aero precision upper reciever - https://www.aeroprecisionusa.com/m5-assembled-upper-receiver-fde-cerakote Yall's suggested Wilson Combat .338 barrel Handguard - https://alexprofab.com/product/ar10-15-fde-cerakote/ undecided on BCG grip and stock, open to suggestions Not sure what my plans are for muzzle device, cant suppress in my state without permit, so will look for some brakes and flash hiders along the way, also opwn to suggestions.
  8. Yeah I'm currently looking at an m5 UR, and I have a friend of a friend that works for TN arms co. that can maybe get me a small discount on a completed lower. still looking at handguard, grip, stock, optic and bcg that what I am currently doing, I have everything listed that I have basically decided on, and looking for advice here to settle on the remaining parts (bcg and barrel basically) There is a reason that I didn't add my location or university with my account or this post, I'm going to try and keep it under wraps until graduation. Although I am at a private, Christian university that lets their students conceal with a permit so I will likely be ok if they catch wind That is currently what I am doing, don't want to purchase everything at one time, and I hope Wilson can restock by their holiday/black Friday sales occur. I shoot with buddies on occasion at longer ranges, if I were to acquire an 18 or 20 inch barrel, how much would this help my velocity and accuracy? worth the extra weight and money? I am an accuracy junky and like to fiddle with my loads and setups until I'm way below MOA for bolt guns. I understand not to expect 3 bullets in the same hole with an AR but would longer/heavier barrel be worth my time at all? and .358 seems like a brute of a bullet, through an AR that would be a hell of a brush gun. Also thanks for all the welcome messages from everyone :)
  9. If not for Availability, I would go .243. I have personally seen a small fox as well as a mature bull elk both taken with the caliber. can be put into an AR format so with enough ammo it could run anything from hunting, to self defense, long range and short range. large variety of bullets as well, there are small varmint loads that straight up zip, as well as some seriously heavy soft tips that would kill anything if hit in vitals. there are a couple of "hot loads" that would give 25-06 factory loads a run for their money, and a few developments in subsonic loads if you wanna keep things stealthy. Only restriction IMO would be (as stated before) availability, as well as inability to kill small game and birds.... you can always purchase a $30 .22 rifle at your local yard sale if that is a problem
  10. Hey everyone, My name is Jacob and this is my first time owning/building an AR of any kind (not first time shooting) and had some questions. I have wanted a .338 federal since I owned my first .308 and heard there was a necked up version, I have also always wanted to own an AR platform rifle so when I learned that a normal AR-10/AR-308 .308 bolt system would chamber a .338 I felt like it was a sign for me to bite the bullet (no pun intended). not to mention recent political shifts have me intimidated about my chances of making this happen in coming years. I have a few questions if anyone would be generous to answer them as I have no mentor through this process other than internet resources. 1. besides the obvious different barrel, what else do I need to do different than a normal 7.62x51 AR-308/lr-308 setup to shoot .338 federal? 2. I am a college student on a budget so I was wondering where it was important to spend the extra cash, and where I can maybe look at cheaper options. for example, is a "high end" handguard necessary or is it just for looks and weight reduction? same thing with a stock and grip (not buffer system just stock) 3. where do I acquire my gas block, as barrel nut? does that come with my custom barrel I purchase? or do I need to look at purchasing some sort of separate piece? 4. what's the best place to find parts for the best price? it seems to be difficult to compare prices as not many places online seem to carry the same products universally. 5. any preferences for barrel length and twist rate for a .338 Federal? will be used primarily for deer hunting, maximum range 250 (never shot an animal over 170, I live in big woods) Thanks for any help or advice
