  1. Thank you for all the info. I did abandon my search for a LH .308. I went with Aero RH BCG, lower and upper. I just am waiting for the stock. Since I wanted a very accurate rifle I ordered a Shillen 24" 1/10 twist barrel. It was not cheap ($606.00 total) but I got it within 1 week and I believe it will have the best chance to be very accurate. Krieger also offers an AR 308 barrel but it starts at about $800.00 and Krieger delivery times, at least for benchrest barrels, is pretty long. I will let you know how it turns out in the future. BTW I am just North of Austin in Georgetown, TX.
  2. The only reliable way to test accuracy is to shoot groups on paper targets and compare them. This is best done on a bench, with a front rest and rear sandbag or from whatever will be most steady. Use the highest power scope you can. 2-3 three shot groups at 200 yards would be best to test both accuracy and conserve that expensive ammo. You may need to briefly shoot at 100 to sight in first. You will do fine with a 150 gr. bullet. Would a 168 or heavier bullet be better? Again the only way to tell is target shooting at paper. Both will kill any deer, elk probably, moose iffy, black bear probably, grizzley bear not advised (see .375 H&H).
  3. Dear Belt Fed, Are you sure LMc is a true hermaphrodite? He/She could be one of those with ambiguous genitalia and never got properly sexed in the delivery room. If s/he was born at home or in a manger (as s/he claims) then who knows.
  4. Thank you Mr. DNP. I assume you are a Mr. I would hate to have triggered some one of the 28+alternate genders out there now. The exception is women. I consider them a separate species.
  5. There are several factors that go into determine optimal twist rate for a rifle. They are bullet weight, bullet bearing surface, bullet jacket thickness, bullet velocity and weather. In general you want a twist rate that will tend towards barely stabilizing your bullet for the best accuracy. A fast twist barrel will shoot all weights and velocities of bullets. A slower twist barrel will shoot more accurately but may not stabilize all weights and velocities of bullets. If you plan on shooting a range of bullet weights say 150-200gr I would go with the 10 twist. If you are going to shoot lighter bullets say in the 110-150gr. consider a 12 twist barrel. If you barely stabilize a bullet with a large bearing surface say a FB bullet with a round nose then if you change to a low bearing surface bullet say a BT 11+ ogive VLD it may not stabilize. The faster the velocity of your load the heavier the bullet you can stabilize. Weather plays into this. Cold can cause instability in marginally stabilized bullets. Bullet jacket thickness is important in that some thin jacketed bullets may fly apart at increased velocities +/or twist rates. I have only heard of this happening in varmint rifles with thin jacketed bullets going at high velocity. I have no experience varmint hunting with a .308 (but I would consider it).
  6. Thanks for the heads up Armed Eye Doc! I have an Aero M5 lower. I see from your profile you are in TX. So am I. I am also a radiology doc (retired). I am also armed. Nice to meet you in the forum. TPO
  7. Hi Ya'll. I am new to this forum. Please excuse me for not having some of the past info. in this forum. I want to build a .308 AR. I have the lower and now I need a completely assembled upper. I want it to be in .308 for various reasons. I would like a SS barrel at least 20" in length, a left handed configuration, and as accurate as possible. I have researched Stag, Aero, Baer, Wilson and PSA. I have not spoken with any of these. From what I can gather Baer and Wilson do not offer .308 uppers. For the others I have no idea about accuracy. Shillen does not offer an a LH upper. Krieger is very expensive and you must use one of their BCG's. I don't know if they offer a LH version. Any help you guys can offer will be appreciated.
