  1. Is there a current production equivalent to the dpms g2 line? I'm specifically interested about the hunter and compact hunter, but info regarding the entire line would be interesting.
  2. Kentucky, Nov 9, 2019. Harvested an eight point buck, field dressed 160 pounds, @ 106.5 yards. 46.8 pounds processed meat. This is the second biggest rack I've harvested so far. Two years ago I harvested a ten point rack. But it is my best so far because it gave me the most meat from one deer that I have ever harvested, and that is the most important part of deer hunting for me, eating what I harvest. The shot was a bang-flop. So with my rangefinder I could determine the exact distance. 106.5 yards. DPMS RFLR-308, gen 1, 24 inch bull barrel. Ultramax remanufactured ammo with 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip (Ultramax is no more, it will be a sad day when my limited supply runs out). I've been hunting with this rifle for about ten years, and I have been VERY happy with its performance. It is heavy, though, with a 2.5-10x50 Krieger scope on it. If I had to do very much walking at all, I would get a different rifle (but I sure as hell wouldn't get rid of this one!)
  3. Last year I stopped by the DPMS booth at the NRA National Meeting in Louisville. I asked there about putting a shorter barrel on my RFLR-308. The factory barrel is the 24" bull barrel. They (DPMS) told me not to shorten the barrel, that it would screw up the gas system and in turn, the cycling. Anyone care to give their thoughts on this? If I were to shorten, I would like to get it down to 22 or 20, no shorter than that. And, if I did go shorter, should I just have my current barrel shortened, or get a new barrel (which would give me the option of a lighter weight profile)? I do like the factory barrel, except for the length. It definitely is capable of more precision than I am!
  4. Kruger Optical scope, 2.5-10x50 w/30mm body tube. Going on my DPMS RFLR-308, my go to deer rifle... UPS says I'll have it Tuesday, which just happens to be my birthday!
  5. No offense taken. If my response indicated otherwise, I apologize.
  6. Edge, round chambered and safety on is what I have been doing. I was just looking for another option that would put me further away from the house before chambering a round. Thanks for the responses.
  7. Would easing the bolt close rather than letting it slam forward (trying to be stealthy in a hunting situation) affect the first round point of impact?
  8. Anyway, source for a smooth rather than checkered buttplate? Different approach, would an A1 stock fit a DPMS RFLR-308, would I have to change the buffer tube?
  9. Yeah, hate it with all the little dimples in it!
  10. Where can I get a smooth buttplate for the A2 stock on my RFLR-308? I don't care if it has a trap door, or if it is just solid. Not looking for added thickness, but if it is thicker I won't kick it out of bed.
  11. Way back to the original post, I have a DPMS RFLR-308, and the only change I had to make to improve the accuracy was to install a Geiselle SSA-E trigger. With a mediocre, sub-$100 scope, I can shoot 0.75" groups @100. I would not call an off-the-rack DPMS a gamble.
  12. Anyway, to the original question, my personal pref (using a DPMS RFLR-308) is a Nosler Ballistic Tip or Nosler Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertip, 168gr. either one. I've used on whitetail and on one coyote (tore the coyote into two pieces, front and back). My gun prefers the 168 over 150.
  13. Deer hunting, wood working, music. I'm a big Beatles fan. I play guitar and bass in a band that averages one paying gig per year; we mostly spend time in the basement "practicing", drinking brew, and being good friends. BTW, in my avatar, that is me with Les Paul, about 30 seconds before he autographed my Les Paul. Reading. Surfing the 'net. Focused on my weight and health right now. About a year and a half ago I lost 50 pounds. Turned out to be good timing, as a little less than a year ago I had open heart surgery. The weight had not caused the heart problem, it was congenital, but the weight loss made both the surgery and the recovery easier. Now I'm focus on keeping the weight off. All is good. At 54 I'm looking forward to starting the second half of my life! And now that all is well, I'm hoping to start kayaking again, something I really haven't done much of for about 15 years.
  14. Just got my TacOps-1 .308 charging handle about 30 minutes ago.
  15. On order, the TacOps-1 charging handle...
