Hornady Superformance Ammunition in Gas Operated Firearms
rhinegarten replied to imschur's topic in Ammunition
After this article I'm finally thinking seriously about just that for my DPMS. Not so much for Hornady ammo, but for my own reloads. -
C'mon in . The water's fine.

Welcome! Lots of good info here and helpful participants, too.

Welcome to the site. Just got done with my first 308 build in January after a couple of AR builds about 20 years ago. Love the 308! If you've built ARs before you already have a pretty good start.

Way cool!

DPMS LR308 bolt locking lugs
rhinegarten replied to rhinegarten's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
There wasn't any on the bolt face. But Survival Shop is right, it's the chamber that you don't want any kind of lubricant in. It can greatly increase thrust on the bolt face. -
...made in Boise ID. - PWS Precision Comp I would be looking at less of a CQB role (hope I never end up in a real life situation like that, shotgun might be a better choice) and more of a 50 - 200 yard scenario with a device that minimizes disturbance of the sight picture. Can't see much beyond 50-60 yards with target detail without a low power scope or binoculars. Probably won't be in any kind of competition. I just like the rifle to stay close on target under recoil. Your photo reminds me of Gunny.

Interesting point you make about the compensator vs muzzle brake. Never quite thought of it in those terms. If you get the chance, let us know how it does along with some of the details - as in where to get one. If it really works that's two pluses, the first one being that it looks cool. It appears as though the very bottom is not drilled so as to avoid the dust signature.

Helotes, just curious, what weight bullet were you thinking of loading in your .458? I imagine a good heavy FMJ, even at relatively low velocities, could wreak havoc on an engine block. The CWS for my LR308 got here today, just in time for the three day weekend - YIPEE! Can't try it out 'till Monday, but YIPEE anyway! -

I'll bet that's a real thump gun. -

Carrier weight system on the way - hope it gets here by Friday so I can try it out over the weekend. Flat wire buffer spring got here yesterday and it's already installed. I've only completed my basic .308 rig a little over a month ago. Already there's an exponentially expanding wish list, and new products for my two 20 year old AR15s that I hadn't previously known about. How can I do this without ending up in Chapter 11? -

Almost sounds as if the gas port is nearly closed off, but that's only a guess. -
Are ALL DPMS & BUSHMASTER parts interchangeable.
rhinegarten replied to NSpyer's topic in Bushmaster
Sooo, does anyone know if Bushy barrels are compatible with DPMS uppers? I've always liked their chrome-lined heavy barrels in the mouse gun. Since they're basically owned by the same company, you'd think they could get their poop in a group and manufacture interchangeable stuff. -
Wow TNP. I'll bet that was a wild ride! I don't even like to do that with a puny little AR-15, which up until about two or three months ago wasn't so "puny" in my world. Pretty good test though.

My New DPMS .308 AP4 Carbine
rhinegarten replied to billt's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Maybe 'cause they're just plain fun. I also have a couple of Bushy ARs that I built 20 or so years ago that are still good shooters. Welcome to the board. I'm still a noob here myself. This is a great bunch and very helpful if you have any questions. -
My New DPMS .308 AP4 Carbine
rhinegarten replied to billt's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I guess this is a generational thing billt and mariodesmo. Just turned 58 here, and my AP4 I've found was also easy to shoot. Had to grab an old 3x9 Tasco that was lying (flat top upper and picatinny gas block) around to slap on it for now until I can afford something decent. I still was able to put 4 of 5 rounds in about an inch with a flyer - which went through the bull. That was with American Eagle 150 gr FMJ. Haven't tried any of my handloads in it yet. -
Two ounces is an excellent find. That's over 3 grand. He can now afford to build an LR308 or AR10 if he keeps the number of accessories down - LOL. I fit in with the hobbyist crowd. No one is under delusions of striking it rich. It's just fun to find. However, I do pack a .45 on such trips due to the possibility of southern Arizona close encounters of the (illegal) alien kind, or just the plain garden variety crackpot. There are no cops just around the corner. Given the choice, my preference would be to vacate the area. Fortunately I've had no trouble to date.

I like traveling over 4 wheel drive trails with my Jeep. Also do a little gold prospecting with my wife on claims owned by a local club to which I belong. But mostly, I work.

Why not? They make Glock frames and Springfield XD frames out of polymers, among others. I saw a demonstration about 6 months ago where someone drew up an object in a CAD program, fed the data to a special printer and in a few minutes, was holding the object in his hand. I forget what it was, something like a polycarbonate hammer. And the tolerances were unbelievably tight. So if something like this could be done with the same material, say, that Glocks are made of...

22-250 Build on Lr-308 Platform-Looking for Cycling Issue Help
rhinegarten replied to cdnick's topic in Building a .308AR
I'll give you my name and address so that you won't forget me come next Christmas! By then you'll have built two more that are even snazzier and will have gotten tired of this one, so you'll know where to send it. LOL As far as the mags go, it's a heckuva lot cheaper to buy the Pmag 20 rounder and cut it down to the desired capacity. Somewhere on this forum a member was kind enough to document the process. I did it years ago with a 30 rd plastic Orlite mag to 10 round in the AR15. I'm still using the magazine, it works like a champ. I recently paid almost $60 bucks with P&H for a 4 rounder from DPMS for the LR308. Didn't think of cutting a Pmag as I had done years earlier with the Orlite for the AR15 until someone documented it here. Won't be making that mistake again. -
Oh I don't think it's a problem. It great that you can do builds basically beginning from a hunk of aluminum and that you can document the process here for us to look over. You really learn all the details of what goes into the making of a lower and rifle as a whole and I'm glad that you can share it with us. To tell you the truth I'm just a little jealous - wish I had that level of skill, and access to the necessary equipment. When you're done, you'll know that rifle inside out and you'll have exactly what you want. It'll also instill a bit of pride and sense of accomplishment. I know how good I feel just beginning from a pile of loose parts and ending up with a completed, fully functioning rifle that shoots 1/2" or better groups and making improvements as time and finances permit. I've done it with three AR-15s and most recently an LR308. I do think that many more of us, though, could complete an 80% lower with access to a simple "dumb" milling machine and/or a drill press with milling table and maybe a drill jig. It would definitely present a challenge.
