I was gonna paint the grip and stock but got scared lol I probably will here soon. Ill prob look up a way to take duracoat off easily, if there is a way, before I do it just incase I mess it up.

Thanks washguy. I went with the 5-15x44 Vortex Viper while it was on sale. I havent shot it yet but the mount seems to fit my needs well. I put it on then laid my head on the stock and didnt have to move it, nice height also. Its a good thing this will be shot only from the bench or prone bc it turned out pretty heavy in my opinion. My friends 556 will be built by friday so hopefully we can get to the desert and get them sighted in.

This is a bit late as iv been a member for a month or two but iv been waiting to post here until this thing was built, upper finally came in. Thanks again for all the suggestions I received from everyone when I had a question. Got a little duracoat happy and used the bipod and mag as test subjects but I dont think I want anything else painted.

same as the previous response. idk how Vortex's red dots are as compared to their regular scopes but I just bought a Vortex Viper 5-15 and really like the quality and for a decent price.

I understand what your saying. I wont be shooting in low light or anything, most likely just the desert when ever I can get out there. I did end up finding a scope which was a 5-15 Vortex Viper that went on sale for 400. I figured exactly what you said, being some one who is not real into optics I probably couldn't tell the difference, unless comparing side by side and then I still wouldn't have any use for the difference in clarity that I may see.

Usually I assume there is something wrong with the item, even though there may not be I just think of worst case scenario. Ill have to do some research like you said and see what I can come up with. There are a few Leupolds up for sale but even though the price may be decent now im sure is will go up and out of my price range(I limited myself to 500) here in a day or two. I figured instead of buying a brand new scope, I could hold off and maybe pay the 5 I was willing to spend but on something way nicer someone doesn't want anymore. You said you have some for sale? And as far as SWFA's sample list with the demo items, do you think any of those would have problems soon after buying them?

Ok this might be a dumb question for some but I have to ask so please bear with me. So after reading another forum I realized that I am not gonna be impatient and buy a scope right away but instead look for used ones. So then the question of warranty arises. Lets just say I bid on a scope and win, then it breaks in the near future, can I call the manufacturer and have them fix it with no questions asked or will they ask for the original paperwork or something. I have heard places like Vortex have an outstanding warranty but I dont know how others operate and how they go about knowing if your the original owner. I plan on attempting to win some scopes here in a few days so any help is appreciated.

Its good to hear that this is a reliable site. I found a Minox scope on there for much less than anywhere else which made me wonder but if you guys say its good to go then sweet.

Just wondering if anyone has had any hands on experience with these Minox scopes. I have a Minox ZA 5 4-20 in mind. That, or the Vortex Viper 4-16 w/ exposed elevation turret.

Good evening once again. Let me first say thank you again to everyone who has taken the time to give me some quality responses its been a great help. I Have a few more questions before I do my final deciding. Im looking at this Nikon Monarch 5-20x44 with the BDC reticle. That model comes with the target style turret knobs along with the short ones so thats a plus. One thing though, this BDC reticle, I heard that its set up to be used at the scopes highest setting. Also, how accurate would that thing be for a .308 round. I know It will take alot of shooting and getting to know the rifle it will be going on but will the BDC eventually be able to be used and accurately. There are are 4 dots and it says for the .308 round you would zero it for 200 yards so those would get you out to 600 yards. So what im wondering is what if im only on 10x, will those dots still be the same value as if I was at the scopes highest setting(20x). Now to this Nikon M-308. I was thinking alot about what BLKSHEEP said about the scopes that are calibrated for certain rounds, which makes alot of sense why I should not go with it. But how far off would say, a 150gr FMJ be from the 168gr HPBT that the M-308 is set up for. Through enough shooting would I be able to figure out some kind of system and compensate? The fact that the M-308 comes with the 20MOA scope base is a plus for me also. So its between these two I think for sure. If the feed back I get says that the BDC isnt very reliable then I will most likely still get one of the two scopes but with the Nikoplex reticle instead of the BDC. I swear this is the last of the questions lol

I see what you mean. The vortex is at 68 max and the Nikon is 50 max so ill do some math here and see how much that round will drop over 1000 then go from there I suppose.

Alright good stuff, I think I may go with that one. Seems to have what I need and for a good price.

I read in quite a few forums that around 70-80 MOA is enough to get me out to 1000, could anyone verify this? If not I planned on getting a 20MOA base. I spent alot of time the past week looking at these things, I keep going back to the SWFA's hoping to see and adj one in the 400 price range but only the fixed power ones lol. So I have another list with only three on it. Nikon Monarch 5-20 (comes with the turrets I want, thanks for the update on those washguy and also the sunshade) Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 (has tall turrets and sunshade) Vortex Viper 6.5-20 Im leaning towards the Buckmaster because im sure the quality is pretty good and it has all of the options I wanted for over 100 less than the other two, But 4mm smaller obj, I dont know how much of a difference this would make

washguy, did your Monarch scopes come with the target style turrets? These look like real nice scopes but the fact that they had the regular low turrets made me steer away, I was just looking over some other forums and it was mentioned that they can be switched out and some models even came with them, this is looking like a good option for me.

was searching google for Panther Arms upper wait times and came across it, forgot what I typed in, probably DPMS wait time.

haha "buy once, cry once" thats a good one to abide by. Unfortunately iv cried many times, I think when is comes to my scope purchase ill be thinking this one through alot longer and make the right choice.

Thats good to know, iv heard good things about "shooter" also. I talked to a friend of mine today and he loves his Nikon, says even in super low light everything looks like HD. Hey blksheep have you had any experience with the Vortex HS? I just looked at it, pretty nice also. See, originally I was gonna spend about 250-300, now im already up in the 500 price range and there are alot more options.

This will just be for target shooting I dont plan on doing much hunting here in southern Cali...:-(, maybe when I return to PA but that wont be for awhile. Would it be worth saving up for another month or so and buying the Nikon M-308? I know right now it comes with a mount but I also dont know the quality of that mount. Whatever I go with I would like it to have an adj. magnification(about 4-14), turret parallax adj. and thats about all really. You mentioned a Millet and iv read and heard pretty good reviews on their TRS-1, whats your take on that one?

I would like to eventually shoot up to 1000 yards but most likely no more. I will most likely be on BLM land because its like 2 1/2 hours from me and I can get out pretty far there.

I deff appreciate the responses. I have been looking at the fixed 10x SWFA but didn't know if that was enough magnification for the distances I would like to shoot. I was also Looking at the Nikon's which I really like, the price tag of over 5 for the M-308 is a little much right now but now im thinking I should just save up for another month and spend the extra couple hundred for it, Im sure I wouldn't be disappointed

Good evening gents, Recently I decided to build a .308. So far I have the lower built which I used a Panther Arms for. Bought a Magpul MIAD and a Magpul UBR , some pmags and now Im just waiting for my Fulton 22" upper which Im told will be on its way in about a week and a half. Now I need a scope and being a college kid, there isn't 1000 big ones laying around for some real good glass so I have compiled a short list of what I have in mind. If anyone has any experience with any of them, or has heard anything positive or negative, some feedback would be greatly appreciated because Im kind of going in circles at this point. Again, I know there are better scopes but please don't suggest something out of the price range that these sit at. thanks again. thanks for the input its deff appreciated. I called DPMS and they said six months so no deal there. Same with Bushmaster, I should have guessed that since you told me they were the same company lol. I did look into Fulton Armory and really like their Phantom upper, they said 4-5 weeks so that is alot more acceptable. Im gonna try to have my dad order the DPMS upper from the place near my home in PA bc they said they can get it in a day but if not im gonna go with the fulton for sure, iv been hearing some super good reviews on them and for only about 300 more than the Panther arms I wanted.
