  1. What's up with the scarcity of AR308 lowers as compared to the AR15? Are the 308s simply not as in demand so manufacturers focus their efforts on what sells? Or are these things so popular that manufacturers can't keep up with demand? Sure is tough to find anything in stock .308! The more I've thought about it, the more I'd actually like to pick up a second receiver before our Jan.1st 2014 have to register everything in California date instead of limiting myself to just one build. Looking more and more like I might be forced to stick with one, unless I want to pick up another BRO.

Huh. They tried this in Kalifornia, and it failed. They will try again. I'm surprised though that this has not been challenged on interstate commerce grounds. Heh, but what do I know, I'm not a lawyer. That is SO lame.
  3. Do you have feeding issues or fitment issues? I've only got my ONE factory 10rd. S&W magazine with the M&P10 - obviously need to get more and was considering these for a metal magazine. PMAGS have and they fit perfectly in the S&W and they cycle Snap-Caps, but I would like to have some steel mags too. WHo makes a decent 10rd. steel?
  4. Right there with you! I did take advantage of the $300 Lifetime Membership when offered this past year, glad I did. I support them when I can, just $10.00 or $20.00 here and there. But I really do like GOA and SAF.
  5. Perfectly stated! Happy Thanksgiving to all. (Can you believe it, another one ALREADY? Where does the time go?)
  6. BUH! Yep! Metal Dog, not Mad Dog. Thanks. I'll go there once I can get the name right....yeah, supposedly they are the Bay Area AR place. Thanks for the offer to check out your sights! I'll see if I can't find my way to Mad Dog and have a look at their wares. If they don't have them, I might take you up on that offer.
  7. And their prices seem quite reasonable, to me anyway!
  8. Good to know. I'd really like to see these before buying if possible. I should contact MadDog Tactical and see if they've got these. I know they carry a lot of Magpul stuff. Have you ever been there? I see we're in the same backyard!

You can't buy online/mail order in MA?
  10. No hunting, just paper. But I've never had a chance to even attempt anything at that range. The local range I prefer is 200 yards max! But still, one of these days, maybe I'll have a chance at a looooong range. That is danged respectable! One of the reasons I brought it up was from reading a review RE the Remington 870 where they tested 20" and 24" barrels - not that the 20" barrel couldn't get out to 100 yards, but sounded like the 24" was a better with heavier projectiles. (I know, then just buy a Remington 700!) - but still, I would not mind having a really accurate and long range semi-auto. 1000 yards? Nice, round number - I'd like to build something that could do this and it sounds like it is not beyond expectation for a .308AR. I just don't want to sell myself short, but don't want to waste money on something that really won't make a difference either.

Cool! Nice little engine! I like the "Hide Steel Case" feature. I can not believe the prices for .22LR. Insanity.
  12. I'm thinking about keeping my still unfired M&P10 totally bone stock, except for the addition of iron sights. I'm probably going to end up going with the Magpul MBUS Pro folding set, but open to suggestions. I understand the steel is better for gas block mounting, vs. the polymers? I've got the polymer rear on a Colt AR15, and it seems just fine as far as functionality. Most folks seem pretty pleased with their MBUS sights, but Troy seems to be popular too, though the price seems to be the primary complaint! Guessing there are M&P10 owners here, and curious to hear about your selections and experiences.
  13. Just how long can one go in a .308AR barrel before it just gets dumb? Doesn't the .308 need a longish barrel to really get out accurately to 800+ yards? Seems like 20" is kind of a standard longest, anything else going to be custom?
  14. I've noticed this - geez, some forums it's almost ALL drama. This one seems like all BUSINESS. I like it! And welcome Russ, I'm new myself. :)
  15. Still having a hard time finding anything in stock. Brownell's does have the TM-10 - but how good are these? They're cheap compared to most of the others, so that mkaes me a bit apprehensive. There are only 3 reviews on the site, all 3 good - though one buyer had commented about some screw being different than the standard - cosmetic - but only merited 4 stars out of 5 as a result. Are .308 receivers generally so much more expensive than AR-15 type because they're all billet?
  16. On several lists now! And yeah, you're right - NY is doing some CRAZY stuff. I'm glad to see several groups including law enforcement from what I hear standing up to the state dictator there. My thread is somewhat misleading - I do have a S&W M&P10 that fits Pmags. But I don't plan on buying or building anything else after Jan. 1st, so I gotta get what I can get now. At least I've got the one on the way. I really need to stop spending money - but these things are like potato chips - can have just one.....as long as I can find somebody with one in stock!!
  17. I think Cali, Mass, and NY could all have a liberal brain tumor competition - any bets on who would win? I'm not, unfortunately. I'll check into those places you recommended, I need to do that soon. So far, almost nothing comes up as in stock anywhere. CMMGs seem pretty available on GunBroker, but only as complete lowers. I really want just a lower - at this point, can't afford much more than a stripped lower! This past week has been financial bad for me, in a good way, if you know what I mean...... :D
  18. DANG! Thanks gents for all of the fast replies! I couldn't help myself. I just ordered up the BRO lower/upper from Brownell's since they said it was in stock. (Grabbed a Spikes lower too while I was there for an 5.56 build.) Hopefully they REALLY are in stock! I maybe should have shopped around, but a bird in the hand.... I will also look into the MEGA Maten as well. You guys are right - I should squirrel away at least one more. Bad timing, right at Christmas. Oh well.
  19. So, I really need to do a lot more reading on this forum and info gathering in general, but I'm somewhat up against time in that as of Jan.1st as many of you already know, we will have to start registering new long guns in California. I really don't think the state has any business in that, so I'd like to acquire at least a lower receiver before then. From what I gather, there are two major routes - the DPMS and the Armalite styles. Gent at a gun shop showed me the cut difference in the receivers, and indicated that the DPMS style would have more after-market offerings and is compatible with PMAGS and Armalites are not. (?) So, I might be leaning towards the DPMS style as I do have a lot of PMAGS on hand that I'd like to use, and if the availability of parts thing is really true - provided it can turned into a quality build, am I thinking straight? The end goal is just to build a really nice target rifle that'll be good and consistent to several hundred yards (I'm worthless much beyond that....) so obviously one would need a good base to start with. I was thinking about starting with a Black Rain Ordinance lower/upper set. What little I've come across seems pretty positive. Would this be a good choice, selling myself short, better options out there? - Given that this might be my ONLY .308AR build - There's my problem - finding something that is available to beat that silly deadline, but that is still going to provide for a solid build. Thanks all for any help and advice!

    Hello!

Thank you all for the welcome! Look forward to the great info here and Lord only knows I'll be picking brains and needing help. Well, wish there was MORE room than I have! I think the end goal is just to build the nicest, target shooter I can. I'm happy to take the time to do it right and spend the necessary money to do so. I do have an S&W M&P10 that I would like to pretty much just leave alone, maybe add a scope. But I'd like to just get used to it (never fired) first, discover its goods and bads and then hopefully engineer all of the bads out of that and into whatever I end up building.
