What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
Fast_Caddy replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I've always used my Redding Big Boss press with great results. Bought it with several other items in a kit from Natchez, me thinks.... Redding makes great stuff. Most any manufacturer's dies are threaded the same. That said, my dies are a mix of Redding, RCBS, Lyman, Hornady and Lee. A kit might be the way to go if you're starting up. Just add a die and shell holder, and go for it. ~ F.C. -

I've heard a lot of people like them, but wasn't sure which one to go with. I opted for smooth on this one. -
What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
Fast_Caddy replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
That's a nice scope for that price! I would think that a 308 would do for most anything up there, but I wouldn't want to take it to Kodiak to chase the big brown bears with it. I've shot moose with my 300 Weatherby, which is a brute... and found it to be more than enough. That being said, the 308 is PLENTY for them with a good bullet, without a doubt. I'd still feel a bit under-gunned chasing the browns with the Weatherby... :hunter: -

Sweet light! My post above needs an update... I had ordered (my first ever order from them) from Optics Planet, and today cancelled my order, never to return. One of the items was an Armalite 15" tactical key mod handguard kit, which they had listed as a "new item" on their site, complete with a cheesy little explosion graphic with those words inside. Apparently it's so new to them that they don't have any in stock, and have no idea when they can get them. Took them almost a week of my order sitting in "pending" purgatory with no answer to my previous 2 emails to finally respond. There's something about a company that advertises items that they don't have or can't get that goes up my balloon knot sideways. 25 bucks more from the Armalite site, but I think it's worth it dealing with a reputable outfit. Optics Plant IMHO is not. ~F.C. -
MOLON LABE Right on, brother. ~F.C.

Just picked up my Matrix receivers (upper and lower), so I placed an order with Armalite for: an Armalite AR-10A LPK w/single stage trigger, upper parts (Ej. port door, door rod, spring and forward assist kit), F93-10 Ergo pro stock (on sale) And then went to Optics Planet for: Armalite Tactical Handguard kit, 15" and an ergo grip. I think that'll get me started :) -
Nice! I may have to check them out. Thanks! ~F.C.

Local Gun Shops That Stand Out - Good to Go

Send It Firearms in West Palm Beach. $20.00 transfers, and the owner's a great guy to talk to. Very knowlegable and happy to genuinely be a help, rather than just ring up a sale. Won't go anywhere else. ~F.C. -

I assume you're asking about moly coated bullets? Moly or Molly? :) I've used the spray-on stuff... can be messy as hell, but effective, I suppose. I've also used the tumble-on powder, which also makes a mess unless you use a dedicated tumbler. It's hard to get rid of once there's a coating of it there. That being said, balistically, there isn't much difference, maybe a few FPS. If you use ANY moly, you want to make sure your barrel is sparkly clean before you start, because the moly will coat over any copper fouling that may be present, and makes it harder to remove after. I will say that it keeps your barrel from fouling so much after, though, if you start out with a sparkling bore. I had a Browning A-bolt 300 Win mag that LOVED the sierra match king 150s. That thing would print ragged holes from anywhere on the planet with them. Not with moly, though. With the moly, I could never bring them in to less than 1.5" at 100 yds. My most accurate loads were non-moly coated in several rifles, but that doesn't mean coated ones are bad. They can keep your bore cleaner longer, if you do it right. That's been my experience with it... ~F.C. -

I've got 2 receiver sets on the way, both Matrix Aerospace. One is the 7.62, the other is the smaller AR15 frame. I've been struggling with what calibers to go with, but I really am starting to like the idea of a creedmoor and a grendel. Both 6.5, using the same pills so less on hand for handloading. Thought it would be cool. -

Matrix Aerospace matched receiver sets in 7.62 and 5.56 due at ffl Friday Matrix Aerospace 13.5" keymod hand guard due at my door today... for 50 bucks with a barrel nut! don't know how you can beat that! -
Hi, everyone, Spent most of my years in Maine, been in the West Palm Beach area for the past year and a half. I don't know very many people down here, so I haven't been fishing much, or hunting at all. Shooting at some of the indoors ranges here is a bit of a PITA, you never know what kind of douchebag is going to walk into the next lane, having no idea what a safe muzzle direction is. Anyone know of any outdoor ranges where I could stretch the legs of some of my longer range rifles? Where's the best hog hunting at? ~F.C.

That shouldn't take too long! :)

HAHA! That's my dilemma right now... I actually bought the 762 set and a 556 set from Matrix as well. I just thought the big guy would want a little brother to keep him company in the safe... So It's probably going to be a .308 or .338 and a 6.5 grendel, trying to keep them looking as closely related as possible. I'm thinking of going with the Matrix handguards for both... I found a 556 (13.5 inch with barrel nut) set for 62 bucks shipped, should be here tomorrow. I'm wondering if the same handguard will fit the .308 with an Armalite nut, I'll be able to tell when the receivers get here. So I'll be buying for 2, and will probably try to get the big guy done first, but we'll see what parts availability and price looks like. I'm trying to get the most accurate rifle I can build while maximizing my greenbacks. I might splurge on the barrels, though. What do you guys think of the JP barrel/bolt combos from midway? A bit spendy, but if they are a good investment I may go that route... ~F.C.

:auto:Hi, all, I'm starting a new 308 (or something) build with a matched Matrix 762 set, due in Friday. Figured I'd be much better off to join a forum such as this where there are lots of seasoned vets here to bounce things off... This is my first post in this forum, and I'm looking forward to getting to know some folks here. I was a contributor on another gun forum back when building AKs was all the rage, even helped a few members who thought the process of bending an AK receiver flat was a bit too daunting without a press and fancy jig... I've since trained my attention to AR style weapons and I've built a 5.56 from scratch (Anderson upper/lower), so while I'm certainly not a pro, I'm not completely green, either. So maybe with a little help, and a few of you good folks sharing some of your experience, I'm on the way to a nice rifle build. I promise to return the favor if there's something helpful that I can share! ~F.C.
