  1. That Federal Fusion at 150 grains is a great deal for a very good hunting bullet at $23.50 per box 20. It's a bonded soft point that's going to expand quite a bit and pretty much stay in one piece. Personally, I think it's the best value for loaded .308 hunting ammo on the market that's commonly available just about anywhere. Every WalMart seems to have it. I'd stay away from Match Bullets or Military Ball or steel case Russian stuff for the actual hunting part. My DPMS Gen2 with 16 inch barrel actually groups best with 168 grain match bullets at 200 yards, but in the brush I would think the slightly lighter recoiling 150grain would be better for the fast follow-ups. Also, the lighter bullets typically have a shorter Cartridge Overall Length, which makes them feed and eject better than the heavier longer cartridges in an AR. About the last thing you need is to be stuck in thicket with a pissed off boar charging you with a pack of pit bulls in hot pursuit and a stuck case in your rifle ....
  2. Oh, my bud's 6.8 SPC AR-15 cracked his bolt near the cam pin hole. Seems like hollowing out an mil spec 5.56 bolt face for 6.5 and 6.8 diameter ammo casings weakens it - glad he caught it during a routine cleaning after our range outing last week ! Scary part of it is that he isn't very thorough about cleaning - he threw his BCG into my sonic cleaner for five minutes just for curiosity's sake about the sonic cleaner and he had quite the surprise.
  3. IMHO those Barnes 150gr TSX copper triple shock should be ideal for hogs. 2900 fps and a modest recoil. I'd almost be tempted to use a red dot over a scope...
  4. I hear you on the accuracy. I compared Hornady 150gr FMJ-BT w/cannelure set in prepped LC brass set @ 2.700 COL with NATO LC M-80 ball on the bench @ 200 yards and was frankly surprised at the performance difference - significantly tighter groups and fewer flyers with the reloads.
  5. You still can't beat 5.56 for INEXPENSIVE high power All-American fun. I bring both AR's to the range.
  6. The .308 is just the cat's ass in terms of reloading payback. I use Lake City Brass. The smallest payback is against bulk M-80 - where I save 25 cents per round. Much faster reloading return as compared to 5.56. With an AR, it is just so easy to burn through rounds at the range !
  7. Ok, that makes perfect sense now. Noveske just reintroduced the 12.5" Leonidas N6 - big demand. The 12.5" SBR in .308 makes sense.
  8. Every ballistic metric for a Noveske 12.5 Leonidas .308 or a Patriot Arms 12.5 in .308 at 500 yards would be so superior to a 12.5 300AAC supersonic. No comparison - and with terrestrial factors like wind it just gets worst for 300AAC.
  9. Please define "authority". No Travis Haley video links please. At 500 yards the .308 is superior in every respect to the .300 AAC supersonic.
  10. That would be my "just won the lottery" gun buy. That, maybe a NEMO, and if Desert Tech ever gets the DT MDR done. https://deserttech.com/html/product_overview.php?product_id=4&load=product_overview Oh, and I'll need three of those IOR Valdada 40mm tube scopes at $3700 a pop.
  11. Guys run Aimpoints on Pistols at present - and the Aimpoint is what PA has copied...
  12. "Now, after what you've said, which seems like an insult to all Primary Arms optics... How many of them do you own, and how many of them have failed on you?..." I own two Primary Arms MD-FGB Red Dot sights. One on a Glock 41 (45ACP long slide) failed miserably due to the shock load (according to PA's post-mortem) and one on a Ruger 10-22 works just peachy. I do understand that their magnified scopes do have a following and appear to be a value. I run Leupold VX-6's on my personal 556 (1-6x) and 308 (3-12x) AR's. I also have seen happy Vortex owners at my Gun Club.
  13. Yep, it's 150 gr FMJ BT with a cannelure
  14. Warning, RANT. There are SO many guys out there who waste their entire range day screwing around with cheap scopes that won't hold a zero, they drift from zero after 20 rounds, or they won't zero to begin with. Frustration and disappointment - not fun to experience or watch. And IMHO, if you hunt, wounding an animal inhumanely because you topped off a Ranier Arms Shilen match barrel with a $250 piece of crap glass is avoidable. Yes, with an AR-15, you can get by with a $150 red dot from Primary Arms. Please, I beg of you, if you go down the .308 road, budget at least $750 for the quality of scope that will allow you to take full advantage of the ballistic capabilities of your platform, that has the internal build quality to take the recoil, and that will be actually pleasant to look through. In the $750 range there are some great options from Vortex and Leupold. Just do it, and don't be a female cat about it either. It's a .308 for Christ's sake. Rant over.
  15. Shot this nice group @ 100 yards yesterday at DeSoto Gun Club using my rucksack as a rest. Fully prepped Lake City NATO Brass, Hornady AMAX 168gr pill, 41gr Alliant AR Comp, COAL 2.8300". FWIW, both my DPMS Gen2 Recon and my brother-in-law's SIG 716 have 16" barrels in 10 twist that really seem to do best with those 168 to 175-ish grain range bullets. We shot Honady 150 gr FMJ all day long messing around with clay pigeons on the berm, but when we really want to put down a group, we whip out our magic box of 168gr AMAX's.
  16. I belong to a gun club, I load like a geek, and I zero at 200 meters. But I have an AR in 308 like I might be illiterate white trash. Could a 6mmBR Tubb2000 bolt gun guy get a tighter group? Sure. But he's compulsive, obsessive, and possibly unsure about his sexual orientation. But I have an AR in a caliber that counts. All my poop is Flat Dark Earth. I really really really enjoy being somewhat UNSETTLING to the bolt gun geeks.
  17. Well, two really big fat does just fell in their tracks in December of 2015. 165 gr Accubond with 50.0 gr PowerPro2000MR (C). We have a huge pasture with horses over 100 acres. I was stalking those deer whilst moving myself amongst the horses. Took stand-up shoulder shots on both. The .308 is just awesome in an AR package. My DPMS Gen2 weighs 8.5 lbs. maybe. I have a Leupold VX-R 4-12x56 Firedot that I just put that dot on their upper shoulders and whoop - straight down. We hung those deer up in the horse barn and immediately dressed them out. We had tenderloins, roasts, and steaks within 60 minutes of the kill. Bought ice to store them on while we decided who got what. iPhones where produced and dinner dates were set. But here's the thing - suburban ladies, who take care of themselves ($$$) but otherwise never thought about tasting game.... Well, here's what we did. A whole venison tenderloin marinated in teriyaki sauce and garlic, grilled over charcoal medium rare, sliced super thin, and laid over a thick bed of wild rice steamed in chicken broth. Bitches went wild. The flavor was just just perfection. Free range sushi. So now, the ladies have put in their order for hunting year 2016. What... if we want more there's a guide in the delta for $300 ? Of course.
  18. Well, courtesy of my DPMS Gen2 Recon 308, I have run out of venison long ago and all the eclectic suburbanites are asking about repeats about last Winter's culinary orgasm. Marinated tenderloin braised and thinly sliced laid over a bed of wild rice; tornadoes of venison Wellington; 5 different chili recipes - they are in love with the idea that they are eating deer. No crazy wild taste. The ladies go insane about the taste and the calories and the 'free range" grass diet. I get asked about venison constantly.
  19. For .308, In terms of reloading I use Hornady 155gr FMJ-BT @ 19 cents each, and Hornady 178gr HPBT Match @ 26 cents each. I use Lake City Brass full length sized with an RCBS small base AR die set for case head space, and I trim with a Giraud Tri Trimmer. AR Comp, 8208 XBR, CFE 223, and Alliant Power Pro 2000-MR are all good powder choices. The .308 full sized small base dies can be a challenge. You need clean dies and a good lanolin based lubricant. I clean my cases before I resize them. The trick is to use plenty of lube - but not enough to dent the shoulders. I've had very good accuracy and feeding/ejection provided I keep COAL within magazine allowances.
  20. Well, the AR in .308 is just a softer shooting rifle than the M-14 or a bolt action rifle. I put an Eotech XPS-2 on my DPMS Gen 2 .308 to let my 115 lb. Southern Belle Sister-in-Law shoot it - she did quite well ! IMG_0106.mov
  21. Been shooting a lot of 5.56 since I just finished this over-the-top carbine build. Been buying Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT in 2000 lots for 8 cents each, and Hornady 75gr HPBT Match in 2000 lots for 15 cents each. I use Lake City brass that I full length size with the RCBS AR small base die ( to case head space ), and trim with a Giraud Tri Trimmer. It's just really economical for high round count range days. I'm taking the DPMS Gen 2 .308 to the 200 yard and 600 yard lines at the range.
  22. I took a really big doe last week with my DPMS Gen2. Very humane kill - she just dropped where she stood. I know guys hunt deer with their 5.56's, I just feel better doing that with the .308. It was a 125 yard shot standing amongst cover. I used a hand load - 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, 43gr AR Comp powder, coal 2.750" We've already enjoyed a marinated and grilled tenderloin roast as well as a big pot of chili. Everyone wants some venison - I plan on getting another one next week. I have another load I want to try that has grouped very tight at the range and it zips along at 2860fps - 165gr Sierra GameKing, 50gr (c) Alliant Power Pro 2000-MR, 2.800" coal. With the 2.800" coal, my brother ( SIG 762 ) and I prefer the metal DPMS mags - he had a few feed issues with the PMAGs.
  23. I just bought a Go Gun SuperComp Ti. I currently run a Miculek brake, which works great but it is super annoying to any person shooting on the bench next to me on the range. It's more the concussive blast direction than the noise I think since everyone is wearing hearing protection when the range is hot. Trying to "fan out" the gas. I'm waiting to have it cerakoted along with parts for an AR-15 build. We shall see. FWIW, I have the Miculek brake timed at 1 o'clock - seems to help with horizontal muzzle movement.
  24. This is THE only aftermarket charging handle that I have personally been able to find that works with the unique DPMS Gen2 receiver size ( more compact than the larger frame LR-308). When I ran an Eotech XPS-02, adding a Badger latch to the stock CH was just fine. As I progressed from 1-6x and now 4-12x Leupold scopes, the larger charging handle really helped tremendously - especially with gloves. It's a tight fit between the rear scope body and the charging handle. As a side note, I use high temp grease on the charging handle body and the inside upper receiver groove - I think it really helps, and I noticed that the OEM anodization had been wearing out on the original part.
