  2. I’ve been asked by a number of friends and family my thoughts on Illinois’s approval of marijuana for recreational use. Here are those thoughts. While I support the legalization of recreational marijuana use under the right circumstances, what I have read of the 231 pages of the Illinois bill suggests it is inadequate. My primary objections revolve around the mistake that marijuana can be treated “just like alcohol”, that is seems done to curry public opinion, particularly of the inner city, and that the state appears to have a strong financial motivation. Nor have me readings shown adequate measures on managing abuse and preventing same. And on expunging prior arrest records? I’m curious, does this mean all those speeding tickets I got on the interstate before the speed limit was raised to 70mph are now void? Because that’s clearly the message… I don’t want to be too anal, but we’re not allowed to pick and chose what laws we’re going to obey. That’s not how society works folks. (Did these people just skip sociology or something?) Mind you I’m not a fan of most Illinois politicians and their lack of comprehension between the words “Leadership” and “Popularity”, so I’m not all that surprised. Disclosure Of Critical Opinions: 1) I see 420 as both a gateway drug and a demotivator. 2) I’m certain social media is now allowing emotional bullying around the clock, young adults are particularly at risk, and the effects can harm long term mental health. This emotional stress will lead to mental and emotional escapism, yet we’ve legitimized a demotivating gateway drug that will be used as the escape. Will it always lead to demotivation and further abuse? Of course not. But maturity seems the key determinate, and again young adults are at risk. Now not just from the drug, but from the implicit message. 3) We blame everybody and everything we can for the problems our nation faces: Gun violence, drug abuse, child abuse, and prejudice, just to name a few. Yet the root problem is our nations ethics, beliefs, and value systems are deeply compromised. To be blunt it’s not the gun, it’s the shooter. Not the drug or the child, but the abuser. Nor is it the race or the religion, but the ego and absence of morals and integrity of the bully. This can’t be fixed by laws, it requires a commitment to re-attaining the behaviors and value systems held by our forefathers but abandoned today. And once again, escapism just makes it worse. (We need responsible news media instead of “media for profit” too, but that’s another day). Governance Goals Of A Bill I Would Have Supported: 1) Someone of adequate maturity who wants to get stoned occasionally should be able to. 2) However, we must first recognize the problems and issues in our society and address how this drug can affect those problems. 3) Meanwhile the rights and safety of others, especially the unborn, and that of employers should not be compromised. 4) Abusers should stand at risk. 5) Taxes and fees raised should contribute to improving the mental health and futures of our children first. The state can benefit, but neither popularity nor profit should be the states primary motive. 6) If we’re to “give” on freedoms we should “get” on increases in personal responsibility.
  3. Folks, I occasionally post on a VMAX forum, RZR forums, even a Glock forum. Here however seems to be the correct forum for a liitte response I've mentioned to a few friends and family I'd make publicly available. My best wishes to you if you don't agree, for its probably more important that we be able to disagree. All the best, D
  4. Wait a darn moment!! Did I just read this: Mrraley was the Chief Armorer at Armalite at the time of his post, and he's talking about Armalite parts, specifically, in this thread. He's not talking about any DMPS-based parts in the least. Yikes! OK then. I get it! You may color me deeply impressed. And out of the QC to boot. Huh. You know, I sorta thought they built cannon's there, but that is home to the Rock Island Arsenal. Then you have Rock River arms in the area, as is LMT Defense. And as I recall Les Bauer was out of Lee Claire. Yes, I need to get back to the QC more often....
  5. That is a FANTASIC offer. Mrraley, it's going to be a bit while I build funds, but I'll most certainly take you up on that offer!! Thanks to all for the tips and suggestions! D
  6. Too true. I remember how respected they were in the 90's as a leader in real time national news. Now they are one step removed from Yahoo. Did you know CNN stands for Cable News Network? I'd no idea! I just assumed it stood for: Constantly Not Newsworthy
  7. https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/15/us/new-jersey-gun-arrest-westfield-elementary-school/index.html Thank god he only had loaded clips! Can you imaging what might have happened if he'd had loaded magazines? Sigh...... And these people are allowed to vote.
  8. Depends on what you mean. Paperwork? Like the required 4473 form and background check required to be guns? No. Do you need the states FOID (firearms Owners Identification Card) to buy ammunition? In practice, yes. The law only says you are required to possess a FOID to purchase or own ammunition as a state resident. I don't believe this actually applies to the dealer at point of sale, and certainly an Indiana or etc resident can buy ammo without a FOID card. That said I buy ammo in 1000 round increments over the internet and I've never been able to do so without sending them a copy of my DL and FOID. I don't recall being asked to display my FOID at my local gun ranges, but then once they know who you are.... Reloading supplies? FOID display not require to purchase. You would however violate Illinois law if you assembled said parts into ammunition without a valid FOID. Was I sorta clear? 🙂
  9. Hello kind sir. I'm sorta below chicago and above St. Louis. More than that doesn't get on the internet. 🙂 Did I mention I'm not only in computers, but one of my area's of focus is cyber-crime? Now seems like time to be explaining myself a bit lest I sound like a azz.. Thanks!
  10. I'm sure we agree on the important things, and even if we didn't it's just another celebration of freedom. Ammunition: I could not buy again and have enough. I started fixing that years ago. That said now that i'm staring to shoot pistol so much reloading is next up on my "I need to learn to...." list. All the best, D
  11. Howdy, and thanks. Yep, I get up into the UP a 2-3 times a year, and there are plenty of 500 yard opportunites there.. 🙂
  12. 10-4. Seemed like something can be milled on a bolt gun to bring the headspace down. But I've gone looking in the interim and I can't find anything credible to support any accuracy benefit in any condition. It all seems to come down to safety. Thanks! D
  13. Yep. But thank you anyway! Hey, if you buy two the cost per trigger is down to $83.50. ( did I just sound like my wife at a shoe sale? uh-oh...) I keep bumping into the Armalite buffer is just plane dialed in. I might yet, but we shall see. I may try one of the Armaspec SRS, and one of the JP's and see what I think. Thanks again!! d
  14. Well you for sure made my life easier. thanks! d
  15. Hello all! Occasional rifle shooter here. Lost access to my local range (long waiting list), so I only shoot 4 times a year or so until that gets fixed. shame. I shoot pistol 3-4 times a month at a indoor range here in down. I've a Rock River AR-15 I bought mostly assembled, then took it apart to learn how it all worked (OK, I cheated. I took an armorers class). I shoot a Remington 700 5r when I'm trying to be accurate, but so far I'm not adequate with it. I certainly understand trigger control, but I'm just not holding the gun on target, or even close on follow through. I try to read before I post, usually quite a bit, and in candor I've joined a forum or two and been accused of being a banned member because I knew too much. Nope, I just try to google and read before I start asking questions. I suppose I'm an oddity concerning gun rights. I think we need changes, and in fact I support the current Colorado legislation. And, yes, I know any form of control is a slippery slope. But fella's (and gals), we either come up with reasonable controls or we face the fate of other nations who have lost gun rights. So why am I here? Futures. I trust Illinois not at all, so I'm building three .308's. Mine, my son's, and my grandson's. Who is 2 1/2 right now. But I'm not sure about the world, and I want him to have the option, so here we are. Not reloading yet, but I save brass, have several thousand of most things. (ok, I don't have much .357 sig), and will soon. In fact I just starting shooting USPSA, so I'm going to need to start reloading soon. Oh yes. Computer guy. I think like an engineer sometimes.
  16. Howdy all! Sketch: Yes sir. I should have said "a better trigger is later". Yep, I know the LPK comes with a FCG. Thanks though, for I might not have right? I suppose I should also fess up I've got at least one scope sitting around unused, a few red-dots, and etc. It's not like I won't be able to shoot the thing. enough to debug it. Gas: Yea, I don't know diddly, but I think I've picked up a recommendation to use rifle length whenever possible and certainly at 18" or more. I meant to state I knew rifle length for the tube, but maybe I forgot. The question is "What brand/style" for the receiver tube.. I've just not seen that talked about much. Suppress: Nope. I know you can read anything on the internet, but it looks like the three most common build problems are (in order even) 1) Mismatched parts, 2) Big expectations/little budget, and 3) Gas problems. I've seen enough suggestions from those with experience that I'm going to build (I'm actually building three of these) the first one with adjustable gas (Heck the seekins isn't expensive) and then look at it again for the next two. 98Z5V: Nope, not butt hurt. Been a problem I take it? None the less, I know when I'm the Noob, so.... I shoot a lot more handgun that rifle, but for rifles I shoot a Rem 700 5r in .308, a RR AR-15 in 5.56, and a Ruger 10/22 for screwing around. I really only shoot 200 and 300 yards (don't have access to a longer range more than 2 times a year), and I'm not consistent enough on the bolt gun. It's probably a 1" or so gun at 300 and I'm more like 6". Heck, I shoot much tighter groups on the AR-15. I suppose I'm MOA on it. In my mind I'm not managing the recoil well . Specifically not keeping the barrel on target. You'll notice a muzzle break for the AR-10. Sure, things get tighter when I shoot FGGM, but I know where the loose screw is on the bolt gun. Mind you when I get access to a range again (i don't at this moment) I'm going to try a brake on the 5r. BTW, the 5r is part of my confusion. I recall a discussion (it was last year) talking about tightening groups with tighter headspace. Since I'm the problem with accuracy at this moment I sort of mentally flushed it. And naturally it's come up again and I'm not smart enough (yet) to know how one addresses the whole thing. Moving on, please consider this: I'm not building to how I shoot today, I'm building this as a one and done investment.. Times be changing and I don't trust Illinois politicians crooks. Building experience: Well, we'll see right? I'm OK taking the AR-15 apart, but I've got a pretty good armorer book and taken a basic armorers course, so... I take my handguns apart more, but then I shoot them all the time. Rifle is more an occasional summer hobby. All: I read a fair bit, here included, so I've read a lot of the commonly published answers. But I certainly don't know any tricks, and my sense is there are tricks outside of "send it back if you get a no-go" as regards headspace. In truth I'm going to ask Fulton and Criterion of they'll sell me a JP bolt that's already headspaced, but then we're back to "what they heck are they doing?" So far I can't see anybody doing anything to adjust them. Yep, I'll go do an intro. Thanks to all! D
  17. Good read. Maybe not pertinent to the OP, but I sure learned from it. Thanks! OP: I just paid $200 for a stripped M5 upper and lower inculding shipping, tex, credit card fee, and FFL. Purdy good deal. Dahlonega Gold and Pawn. Barrel: Look, I don't know anything, but from what I can tell the Criterion is the best value for dollar out there, and if you want to to better you're going to spend twice as much. By the way, John Paul, of JP bolts, was quoted as saying he's dropping the .260. He claims to respect it, but feels starting out today, his market, the builder is better served with the 6.5. Just read it today in fact.
  18. Hello! Living here in Illinois, I've decided I'd best build a few AR-10/AR-308’s whilst I can. As you can guess, I’m hoping for a few tips. 🙂 Purpose: Genera - Everything from a rare deer hunting trip to pool cue chalk shooting at 100 yards. I shoot a 7005R that is better than I am (by far) but for these I’d still like to build something that’s sub moa. When I’m killing paper that will be typically be at 300 yards, but I occasionally get access to a 500 yard range. I suppose a coke can at 300 yards is the minimal accuracy goal. Budget: It will be what it will be. However, this is a price/performance build, not a high end “damn the cost” nor a “how cheap can I build it” exercise. Money will go as needed to places that need it, less so to other areas. I'll handle trigger and optics later, so I've deferred 50% of the cost already. I’ve already ordered three stripped Aero Procession M5 lower and upper sets, Magpul PRS for the stock, JP’s bolt, and a Criterion 18.5" SS barrel. However, I've still a few questions. If you don’t mind sharing, here goes: Q1: I’ve read some disparaging remarks about the Aero LBK. Which I have to admit had been my plan. Is there better fitting, more complete, and and correct LPK ya’ll would recommend? Q2: My time behind my 700-5r tells me recoil management affect accuracy. I was thinking about using the Armaspec Stealth recoil spring. Any advice or comments? Q3: I'm going to use rifle length gas. Is there any magic to selecting a gas tube, or is this one of those "just pick any rifle length tube and move on" moments? Q4: Headspacing: How is this adjusted? Can the bolt be tuned? You can't hardly ream a chamber to be tighter. Is this something even an average (and that's all I'll have here) gunsmith can get right? Are there different sized bolts? How... Why.. huh? Here's the build list in case in matters.. Thanks in advance! d
