7.62x51 marked barrel and ammo question?

If my barrel is stamped 7.62x51, does that mean I can still shoot 308 rounds through it? Aren't 7.62x51 and 308 the same thing?

Well I looked at both of those links for DPMS and they said it was safe. I also called DPMS today and that is exactly what he told me. I just didn't know if he was pulling my chain. Thought I'd throw that question out on here. thanks
