Gas block on DPMS LR-308T

Recommended Posts

Friends,

When my new low-profile receiver arrives for my DPMS LR-308T, I'm going to have the local gunsmith do the organ transplant procedure. But I want to be a step ahead of things.

First off, it appears that the railed gas block has to come off, and then the free-float heat shield, and then the gas tube, then the barrel nut & barrel.

Is the railed gas block pinned on? It's hard to tell, although, it feels like a 1/8 inch Allen wrench fits it. But an Allen wrench can feel like it fits a lot of things that aren't meant to fit an Allen wrench.

Second, and this is plain weird, when I was trying Allen wrenches on the gas block, I noticed that there's a hole underneath its Picatinny rail, and I can see daylight on the other side. The hole is about 0.050", left-to-right, crossways at right angles to the rail on the block, and about a half inch below the rail. My 5/32 Allen wrench is too big for it, though, but I gotta wonder, does this mean DPMS gave me an adjustable gas block, or does it mean something else? I can't see them drilling a hole where they don't need one.

Thanks!

From what I saw on DPMS' website it's a set screw gas block. Gas blocks that are pinned have a pin that goes from the 3 to 6 o'clock position at the bottom of the block. Set screw blocks have a (or two) set screws at the 6 o'clock position which go into the barrel.

The hole just below the rail is for the roll pin that holds the gas tube in place. The front of the gas tube has a hole in it that you align with that hole on the gas block and then drive a roll pin through.

Dude, many thanks. You're one of the reasons I'm glad to be a member here.

Now if you could make DMPS hurry up on my order for a new lo-profile upper receiver....
