Upgrade parts availability

Recommended Posts

Greets, new to the forum.

I have a Sportical 308 that I've upgraded with the SAW pistol grip and the LR-308 heavy upper from DPMS which adds the shell deflector, forward bolt assist, and dust cover that did not come with the sportical.

On top I have the Eotech 552.XR308 with the Eotech 3x magnifier with the flip to side mount. To complement that I have a set of Midwest Industries flip up front and rear sights for use should the optics fail for whatever reason. Other than those options, my Sportical is still stock.

I'm interested in some of the aftermarket switch/latch options available for the AR-15 platform but want to be sure that I'm ordering the correct parts for the .308.

I'm interested mainly in the oversized ambidextrous safety lever and the bolt latch setup that drops the contact pad lower and adds the second to lock the bolt in place.

I'm also looking at http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-GUNFIGHTER-Charging-Handle-GFH-Mod-3-7-62-p/bcm%20gfh%20mod%203%20762.htm as an upgrade option once they become available this spring. This part apparently is 308 specific as it has to be longer in order to accomodate the longer action/upper.

I reckon my question is this: Will the other above mentioned parts for the AR-15 work also in the .308 platform? If not, does anyone have a source for the appropriate parts for my rifle?

Thx for your input.

Fulton Armory has the charging handle you seek. Go to the titan parts section.

Brownells sells the DPMS LR-08B ambi safety here. This is the same safety they offer on the SASS. If you go to this interactive page and click on the safety it will bring you to the DPMS individual part page.

As for the bolt catch and magazine release Im not sure. Some lower parts kits have standard AR-15 parts while other have slightly beefed up versions. Im just not certain theres other physical differences that would keep you from accomplishing your mission

wrong part.

Bravo Company does have the VLTOR BCMGunfighter charging handle in stock. Just received mine and it's nice.

Noticed also that Midwest Industries http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/

has a section for 308 black rifles including a drop in (no gunsmithing required) 2 piece 4-rail forearm for the DPMS Sportical 308.

According to Troy Storch of MI this is for the .308, the .223 version uses a normal AR-15 handguard and directed me to the MCTAR-17 for those who are curious.

I ordered the ambi saftey from DPMS.  Installed it has a little play in it.  I called and CS said "yea it's a little loose".  WTF?  It works fine; just not what I would have paid $40 for if I had known.  >:(

By ambi-safety, did you mean

this one: http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=871

or this one: http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=5818

I was originally curious about this part ( http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=872 ) as I found the application of the standard safety to be preferable than on the right side of the rifle.

Also, received this comm from 'Shane' at DPMS regarding tactical bolt catch part# LR-11T

Sorry about the confusion, I had to many things going on at one time when answering your email.

The bolt catches are a little different between the 223 and the 308.

The LR-11T is designed for the 223, it will work with the 308 rifle, but it does require a little material removal from the back side of the top pad.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact myself.

So, it appears as though with a little application of abrasive persuasion, this part might be made to work. Anyone done so yet?
