How does .308 do with .223 BUIS's?
jfeenin replied to motorwerks's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
yeah I should have been more clear. When not using a quad-rail the rear sight is higher and (per Armalite for my rifle) needs a taller front sight if using the gas block rail. Of course you can use sites meant for us on a straight rail on the gas block either. I wasn't thinking when I got my AR-10 and just figured I'd use the iron sights that came on my LMT MRP AR-15 and that didn't work so well at all. -
Adorama Camera for Scopes and Optics
jfeenin replied to imschur's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
<thumbsup> <thumbsup> <thumbsup> I can certainly vouch for Adorama. They are one of the only two NYC camera shops I will deal with. The other is B&H. However I never considered either for firearm optics until you pointed me to the Bushnell. Not only do they carry them the one i had they had for $35 less than MidwayUSA and even less than the other discount place I have bought from. Imshur... what type of camera do you use? -
I know my nephew is certainly liking the one I gave him on his. I shot his rifle myself and it seemed to work well. The one I had I probably overpaid for though. I've seen the same thing for a lot less recently. Then again, me buying things in a hurry without fully checking around isn't exactly a new thing for me. I did it again when i got the AR-10 with the Walther PS 55. Also awesome on 22's I am sure and so far it's held up on the AR-10. I just don't think it's built for it so I bought the Bushnell I am anxiously waiting for as I type. I was thinking of putting the Walther on my 22 handgun but I am not sure. I may sell it.

How does .308 do with .223 BUIS's?
jfeenin replied to motorwerks's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
On an AR-10 doesn't the front sight have to be taller due to the fact that the flat top rail is higher above the bore than on a 5.56? -
I bought one of their scopes, the non laser one, when I first got my AR. The Illuminated reticle was essentially just too bright at any setting and I was unimpressed with the quality. I gave it to my nephew who put it on his S&W 22LR AR version and he loves it though. He shoots it without the illumination at all. Which is a nice feature of those vs a red dot. So I think it depends on what you are looking for. For my money I'd take a pass because, while cheap, there are a number of good alternatives out there in the same price range that I think are better quality, albeit most not magnified. Or I could just say if it's not an ACOG or an Aimpoint it's not worth having. Except I don't believe that for a second LOL....

Bi-pod Options on an AR-10 with standard handguards
jfeenin replied to jfeenin's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
One could look at it that way. More importantly though my Harris adapter should arrive early next week and even more importantly my Bushnell 1.32 MP should be here tomorrow in time for a weekend test run :) -
Bi-pod Options on an AR-10 with standard handguards
jfeenin replied to jfeenin's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
Yes I know, a lot of people make the adapters. Some of them cost nearly as much or even more than the bipod itself. What amazes me is that with the popularity of the 1913 rail that Harris hasn't made a bipod that doesn't require an adapter to attach to one. For me right now, I already have one I plan to use, and I have no rail on the AR-10, so the adapter is the best idea. But still it would seem almost common sense that they would make one that had the mount built in. -
Bi-pod Options on an AR-10 with standard handguards
jfeenin replied to jfeenin's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
A little off topic here since my AR-10 doesn't have a quad rail but I wonder why it is that Harris doesn't make a unit that attaches right to a rail without an adapter. At least I have never been able to find one anyway. -
Well you could give me yours and have the joy of building yourself a new one... <lmao>

Pre-Ban mag options for an AR-10
jfeenin replied to jfeenin's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
Either way I would need to find an M-14 preban mag for that too. However I might opt to keep the floor plate too if it fit. Being wrong in NY is a huge deal if you run into someone with a chip on their shoulder looking to make an example out of you. With any luck in a couple more years I will be out of this God forsaken socialist state. -
Bi-pod Options on an AR-10 with standard handguards
jfeenin replied to jfeenin's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
That may just do the trick. The next question is to decide if the plastic is sturdy enough to mount one too. For $14 though I will probably just order it and try it. Can't go wrong at that price. -
Thanks for all the input. I just wanted to be sure.

I bet. We also have a 1942 SA Garand but it's not in as nice condition. That one was made in 42 and rebarrelled in 46 so ya know that one has seen action. I am still kicking myself for not getting an 03A3 when I was at the CMP picking up the Garand.

Pre-Ban mag options for an AR-10
jfeenin replied to jfeenin's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
Will the kit work with a M-14 body? However it says it's for converting M14 bodies so I assume it's a Gen 1 follower. Correct? It has to be in order to be for that purpose. If so I could use the internals in a pre-ban M-14/M-1A mag. Now I just need to find a place to get one of them.... -
Yes, I have considered ordering one. However the one on it is correct for that particular rifle, and it's original not a reproduction. It was a 1950's manufacture one. 1955 to be exact. Also the M5 Bayonet is correct for this rifle, although I do have a cut and an uncut version of the M1 Bayonet as well.

Sure, why not... <thumbsup>

I was originally planning on swapping out the standard handguard that came on my AR-10 with a free floating one. However after actually shooting it stock I actually really liking the feel of the standard handguard. Accuracy seems acceptable to me this way as well so far. However there was another reason I was going to put the handguard on. To give me someplace to mount a short bi-pod. I was going to use a light smooth round handguard. I don’t have the a need for a quad rail on this and would actually like to avoid one at this point. So my question is… What are my options for bi-pod mounting with the stock factory setup?

Thanks! And here's a gratuitous picture of my baby. Not an AR but still a beauty!

I’d just like to say a quick but heartfelt “Thank You!” to everyone that has helped me out here. I must admit I am a recent AR convert, but a convert I am indeed. I bought my first AR, an LMT MRP platform, last summer (this one). I equipped it with an ACOG TA11H and fell in love with something else I will have trouble affording more of but I digress. After I got the 5.56 I began pining over a 7.62 caliber AR almost immediately. Funds weren’t there though. That is until early in June I got a bonus and two local stores had .308 AR’s in stock in my price window that I was interested in. One had a DPMS and the other had an Armalite. I ended up choosing the Armalite (this one) for a couple reasons, not the least of which was that it had a chrome line barrel and a muzzle break and the DPMS was straight chrome moly and no muzzle attachment at all. This is NY remember so many manufacturers have forgone even a permanently mounted break and just go with flat end barrels. I am a big fan of the chrome lined barrels for this type of firearm though. I may bet other uppers later that aren’t for target shooting purposes but the “working” barrels should be chrome lined IMO. I have less than a hundred rounds through the AR-10 and I must admit I am already planning another AR build in my head. I want to put another upper on the AR-10 eventually. As I eluded too this one will be for strictly accuracy purposes. Free floated handguard, longer barrel, and possibly in .243 caliber I am not sure yet. Also I want to build an AR-15 platform from the bare lower up. I think that would be fun and it would allow me to afford it easier when buying it a little at a time. I am choosing the 5.56 caliber for that build though simply because the parts in that platform are far more interchangeable. See I did learn something! ;-) While I am new to AR’s I am not new to firearms. I know some of the questions I ask here may make it seem that way but if I am not absolutely sure I’m going to ask people who I think may know. When it comes to .308 AR’s you’re those people. I’ve actually owned dozens of firearms. Yeah I know many have more but even more have less. Currently I have less myself but I am rebuilding my collection. I’ve done spring jobs on revolvers, stock work, replaced triggers, and the like. I am pretty familiar with breaking these things down competently. Heck my father in law’s favorite .22 is a Ruger 10/22 where the only original parts are the receiver frame and the bolt. The rest of it, the barrel, entire FCG, stock etc. I replaced for him. Including doing final fitting and complete finishing of the stock. For several years I even ran on of these forums. Just recently I started one back up again under another name. Although I am an AR convert, I must admit however that for my favorite rifle my heart still belongs to my CMP Collector Grade M1 Garand. I don’t shoot it much so as not to wear it out but this rifle is one I waited 20 years to get my hands on and I am more attached to it than any of my other firearms. It’s a piece of history. I took her out a couple weekends back and she was as sweet as ever. Up until this past year I had all but given up shooting for many years for several private reasons. However this year alone I’ve already sent more lead down-range than in the past 8 combined and I don’t know how I did without it. It’s an amazing hobby. Well so much for “quick” I guess but it’s definitely heartfelt and once again “Thanks!” to everyone here.

Pre-Ban mag options for an AR-10

Armalite... have you found out anything on this yet? -
The job I'd be OK with losing but I'll keep the wife. She makes me spend more money on nicer guns than I would even for myself LOL Her dad always tells her that if her mother was more like her they'd still be together. <laughs>

RayGun19... Thanks for the offer but there is no way I could afford to take the time off work to drive to IL to replace a $33 part. My wife is super supportive of my shooting hobby but she would flip on me if I told her I was going to do that. LOL I'd need to find a place to live and sleep when I got there LOL.

Thanks Weaponizer. I Googled it and that didn't come up. Seems it's not much of an issue. The white-ish looking wear on the bolt is "enhanced" by the camera flash and the angle I took the picture at. It doesn't really look that bad in real life. Camera flash's are great for making things like that (and dust) look about 100x more prevalent. I tore the gun down and oiled it before use and there was no visible wear on the bolt anywhere. Or anywhere else for that matter. I was a bit paranoid about it because when I bought it, since it came in the plastic case, the guy at the gun shop didn't bother to put it back in the cardboard box when he gave it to me. So without the box I was left asking Uncle Armalite here to match exactly what model it was from the SN. Just so I knew exactly what I had bought.
-
I guess that's the question though. This is my first 30 caliber AR. I was hoping someone with some experience could tell me if this is a typical thing with them or not.

There's nothing longer than 200 yards within 100 miles of me :-( Any opinions on the bolt?
