Thought experiment: If WW II happened again
Rojodiablo replied to MaDuce's topic in General Discussion
:o China and Russia: LEt's see......Russia and China will join forces. They WILL seize control of Iran, Libya, and several other key oil ports. Chinese will start an electronic warfare program that will screw us up horribly, and beyond comprehension- GPS??? Scrambled and distorted. Drones will fly into windows like birds, planes will be hopelessly lost for periods of time. Banking in the US will be a mess. Water systems, power grid vulnerability will leave us staggering under the strain of NOTHING working right. Remember Vietnam?? B 52 bombers vs SAM. Let's see how well they do against the best tech China has pirated from us and improved. China, Russia, and Iran have underwater missiles- not torpedoes. 230MPH underwater means....... USS Stennis will stay far, far out to sea. Subs will be shot at (Yes, the Chinese can track our subs.) Naval warfare will be changed drastically; we will not sail unopposed, and losses would be staggering- 5,000 per big ship lost. Air power: Lets see; we will have the F35 Joke Strike fighter, grounded, or under testing and not combat ready. Not to mention, the Chinese cloned it and their version flew BEFORE ours did time-wise. Between Russian and Chinese tech, it is likely their version will have less bugs than ours. And, their tech might actually render weapons systems inoperable. No one knows...... Homeland: There IS no invading China. Just too many foot soldiers to tangle with on the ground. The good news is, all those weapons everyone swears are not out in space will likely come raining down on each other. Total crapshoot as to who fares better. Russia: Supply Chinese with fuel and munitions, and tech specialists. Russia will likely push sub warfare to all corners of the oceans. Again, crapshoot who does better. There IS no invading Russia. Winters are impossible for all but Russians, Chinese and N. Koreans. (Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin can not take on Russia in winter...... Soooo, no invasion.) ::) Russia is certain to do one thing, mark my words. If the big one gets going.... the FIRST place Russia will nuke will be Afghanistan. They have a score to settle, and we, the US are not going to tell them "No, leave those peaceful good people alone." <laughs> We now know better...... But hey, we might send them some cigars to celebrate. THIS is the next World War. China, Russia, Pakistan, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, N. Korea, Cuba, and a few others. And, USA, Britain, France, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, S. Korea and a few others. Many will be up for grabs, and therefor will work to stay neutral: Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and a slew of others. (They will work to stay neutral because THEY are the oil countries, and THEY know darn well they will be captured and claimed by SOMEONE. Who??? That is the real question. The next WW is gonna be a real bicch....... <dontknow> -
Thought experiment: If WW II happened again
Rojodiablo replied to MaDuce's topic in General Discussion
Pretty simple: Germany has no major military, nor does Japan. We have more military in Germany than they do........ We have way more military in Japan than they do. Now, on to specifics for each force: Navy: In WWII, 80% of all ships sunk by subs were cannons, and not torpedoes. Torpedoes were not accurate nor reliable in 1942. Today?? Navy would have a 100% kill rate. Navy air power- Pretty simple. We go up, they go DOWN. Air Force: Some fighter sorties, likely they would spend their days shooting down escaping miscreants and politicians. A fistful of B1 Lancers and a barrel full of B52's later, there is no more power, water, rail service, and all large scale communications are extinct. Some Warthogs will come in and remove problem tanks and SAM installations. Army: Limited role; why send them to occupy the place?? Screw that. Army vs Army, we outnumber them all, and BOTH countries have no 2nd amendment, so private weapons and militia resistance will be limited until arms get smuggled in. By then, it will be OVER. Marines: The Marines will establish beach fronts, secure air fields, and put forth a display of dominance that will quickly weaken resolve of unarmed masses. Someone asked about China???!!! :o -
[Refinishes & Restorations] A sampling of my works. [Pic Heavy!]
Rojodiablo replied to a topic in General Discussion
Find a buddy who does heating/ AC. Get a furnace blower and motor housing out of a unit he is replacing. They are light years better than regular fans. Smooth, steady air flow, quiet, and powerful. Did I mention; cheap or free!!! -
308 or 260 for long range hunting rifle?
Rojodiablo replied to TomBruto's topic in General Discussion
For a hog of that size, the 308 is already marginal past 200 yards. At 600+, shot placement becomes incredibly critical. For 'yotes, as was mentioned, you will be just fine. As Robocop says, girthy..... onery is another way to put it. If it were me trying to take that shot?? 30-06 or 7mm mag or more. The least I would want would be the 338 AR. -
Thanks Unforgiven. My thought was, most issues were over 2 years old. That's a full development cycle for most manufacturers of just about anything. I figured that with such internet scrutiny, a lousy product would be beaten silly and crawl under a rock, or simply get fixed. My assumption is there are no serious issues being posted up about the RRA 308 as of late. So, I am waiting to hear from the guy to send off some (More.....) money!!

So, accuracy is known to be good to great. Triggers are known to be good to great. Now, on to the other stuff: Extractor abusing the brass. In real life, how many rounds before it is a non issue? I can tune it if need be, but if not.... how many rounds until it cleans itself up? Bolt breakage. I have read some reports of previous bolt failures at low round counts. I tend to shoot a LOT. I have 2 sons who are late teen and in the 20's- they shoot a LOT. Real world shooting, are the issues resolved? I know the issue was more like a 5 year old thing, just want to be assured the parts are 20-30K cycle minimum. FAL mags. I have read of double feeds, and tricky feed issues. Not my idea of a good time..... :o So which magazines are better; poly or steel, and do they need tuning or are they now GTG. I honestly do not know how recent the issue has shown itself, or if this was an issue of the past which has been rectified. Please help me out with these specific questions. If there are any other issues I should know about, please let me know- be honest. Say "This bent, that fell off, the other thing was crooked....etc." I'd like to lock this deal up by Friday evening! Thanks, Paul.

I actually got my Bushmaster 308 from a police officer who purchased it with the intention of it being a squad carry rifle. But the dept. then bought like 60 AR15's and it left him with no venue to really use the rifle. (Dept. buys ammo fro the AR15, and they closed the personal carry option.) So he put it up for $900, with some extras. I had been waiting for a few months just watching and waiting, and it was a good opportunity. I doubt that any better deal is out there- but it can be matched. Since then, I have seen 4-5 308 platform rifles for sale around 900-950. Ask for several good pics of the internals, and then decide if it is what you are looking for. There will be good deals for low mileage rifles, and a few hundred rounds thru a gun is not unreasonable. The chamber, and inside the upper will tell the story of how much mileage the rig has seen. If one is patient, it can be done. <thumbsup>

There is one Barret 50 in the pic. Appears to be 2 Barret AR30 in there; either 300 Winmag, or 338 Lapua. (More likely the Lapua.) There are a couple bolt rifles, they are currently using 300 WinMag in bolts mostly. There are several Mk 11 semiautos; basically the KAC Sr25 with an 18" barrel on it. You know, it's a shame they got picked on for the logo. Rock bands use that font, a soccer team uses it, on and on. Yes, it is a bit on the 'Meant to intimidate' side. Then again...........14 rifles and men capable of sending you to the 'Happy hunting ground' from 1500 yards away or more is pretty darn intimidating in and of itself. Far too much is put upon these soldiers for the slights they have. They get the weird, not fun jobs. They get a lot of stress, and are expected to be mean, tough, killers, security, and then on the other side, they are expected to never make a politically incorrect move. Just kill people with a bit of style, and go back to base and stay locked in your box until we send you back out to shoot more people. What the hell is THAT????! No one is perfect, and these soldiers are picked on rather relentlessly. Until they are needed; then people cry for them. And then.... they are scorned. What garbage. (Sorry for the rant.)

Okay; #1. Apology accepted!#2. See Bold above..... Let's hope to hell he's not shooting Dear, but rather DEER. I love a good ramble; I just caught the typo and laughed my ass off!!! <laughs> Thank you for the entertainment at your expense. Good stuff!! To the OP: The muzzle break?? I have a couple of them, one is on a .338 Lapua. It makes a BIG difference on that one. Of course, anyone spending time along side me gets their hair re-arranged and singed off, but that's what friends are for! I do not feel for a carbine size rifle a break would be necessary. Especially given the intended uses of a carbine size rifle. While they CAN deliver the knockout punch on a hog at 500 yards, most shooting is really under 200 yards. And at 200, my rifle shoots very straight with no issues whatsoever. As to a flash suppressor, maybe if they are really good, then it might be worth it. I don't really know what to say on that; At night, even an AR15 with a flash suppressor makes for one heck of a fireball if you are looking in it's direction, or looking thru a scope shooting over it. If the flash suppressor will make the fireball smaller and round, then I would say it is worth adding on, especially for hog hunting or varmint hunting. I feel it is not the end all, beat all because a .308 is not real quiet when it goes off in the dead of night. So a little fireworks to go with the boom is just par for the course.

Bushmaster 308 ORC that you are looking at. It likes Wolf/WPA steel cased ammo just fine; 200-300 rounds in a few hours last weekend. It will not be choice #1 with regards to weather resistance, but in most cases, it is just fine, and the price is excellent. I am about 1.5 MOA at 100yds, then out to 200 yds I am more like 4 MOA. (At 200 yds with that ammo, I am grouping about 8" with a low power optic. Just put a 6x on, and expect this to get better.)I'll not comment on concerns of social unrest- it might, it might not. What I will say is, the Bushmaster is accurate, reliable, and not too terribly heavy. It will take on a lot of feral pigs in the next few months. Using a 40mm red dot, it is a very easy to use rifle.

Thanks for the input guys. Now, specifically, does a KAC bolt headspace generally match a DPMS barrel? This is kinda the jist of the question- I will expect to swap a barrel in 3 years or so. Likely I will go up to an 18" from the 16" I currently have. I would expect to match the new barrel with a new bolt, if not a whole new BCG. But I feel the bolt carrier should be ok, the question winds up at headspace for the new barrel to a new bolt. If anyone knows for sure, please lets me know. Thank you very much!! ;)

Just don't say it to her face........ or within 300 yards of her!!! ;D

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
Rojodiablo replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
It's like this: You can shoot it, and the bullet will do its' job. A 22lr will 'kill' most things if done right. Then, there is distance; to reach out and touch something. All bolt rifles excel at this to some degree or another. Then, there is the ability to put more ammo into the target, whether to drop it faster, or to drop more of said target in a given amount of time. Plus, more bullets sent downstream creates intimidation. The AR15 excels at this. Then, there is the intimidation factor, tied to the ability to drop more than one target in a given amount of time....... coupled with the ability to rip off an appendage or 2. The AR10 platform. But the reason I finally bought one??? Got a smokin' deal on the rifle. <thumbsup> $900 for the rifle, sling, optic, case, 5 Pmags, and 2 Bushmaster mags. -
I have a Bushmaster 308. It's fine, with a low round count. But I have been known to put a lot of ammo thru a rifle, or a pistol. (My 2 ar15's have a combined 7500 thru them and they are 4 and 6 months old.....) I like to keep spares on heavy use items, and I already have a spare BCG and reapair kit for the 15's. When the time comes to replace the Bolt on the Bushmaster, would there be any issue with using a Knight's Armament 25 rifle's BCG? Would there be a headspace issue, or would they be compatible without modification? On the other side; if you were to swap out a barrel, would it be a better value to swap to an Armalite AR10 BCG and barrel, or would the better value be in the KAC components, or stick with DPMS parts? ( I understand the 2 are both fully tested and proofed. This is why I am asking about them as the 'next generation' if I wear out my Bushy's guts.) I shoot enough that I render a .243 into a .250 in about 5 years....... :o

The site is nice, and definitely laid back and a nice kind of quiet place compared to many other sites I find myself on. One thing, if I might: When a person hits the board, maybe a header where you can directly pick what you are looking for; ie forums of ass't. nature (General forum, tech, DPMS, AR10, off topic, etc.) Right now, a new member will have to take a left at Albuquerque <dontknow>and then go 3 stoplights to get to the general forums here. But other-wise??? A really nice house you have here. Thanks for having me!

Okay, FWIW, I have tested the Wolf/WPA teflon(copolymer) coated ammunition to try and see where this falls in reality or fantasy.A few things: The old brass cased Wolf ammo had a lacquer coating on it. THAT stuff did cause mass headaches. I picked up a S&W M&P15 sport, and took it on a road trip to TX from Ca. Hunted and plinked 'yotes and hogs for 6 days. Tried a lot of different ammo. Federal Fusion was really nice for hunting. No issues with any ammo, read on.... The Wolf test:Once I left Ca and got into America, I stopped by Cabelas and used some discounts I had saved and got some full size mags and different ammo. Went directly to a ranch with a local friend, and started tossing the ammo downrange. The Wolf gave good accuracy (not MOA, but carbine acceptable. Freestanding, it matched M855 ball ammo) and happily, no feed issues or FTE issues. The HOT TEST: Ran 4 full mags at WFO. The plastic foregrip was getting stinky, it was hot to touch. Barrel was smokin' hot. Put in mag#5, and chambered a round. Pointed the rifle in a safe direction, and walked away for 20 minutes to eat lunch. The ammo did not cook off. Came back, took the safety off, and pulled the trigger. BANG. Fired, and ejected the round properly. Checked out the case; the teflon was not distorted or maimed. The rest of the mag went thru the rifle with zero issues. 4,000 rounds later, I am happy with it. A couple hard primers failed to fire off, but that is the only issue. On to the Bushy 308: Same story. I picked mine up mid Dec. and the first chance to shoot it was last week. <dontknow> Anyhoo, ran 100 rounds 308 winchester thru it. Seems to work okay with the brass. Switched to Wolf 7.62 and followed the same test as I did with the 15 Sport. The Wolf fed, ejected, and did not cook off when chambered really hot. The coating is extremely durable from what I have seen. One thing noticed, the cases show some drag on the side from the ejector pulling hard to throw the case before it leaves the rifle completely. But it is not an issue. My only issue was with of all things; my Magpul mags loaded to full 20 did not want to 100% reliably chamber the 1st round, with either type of ammo. It would pick the round up properly, and send it to battery 95% but the bolt did not lock 100% of the time. Upon cleaning, the rifle seemed a bit dry. It's now well lubed, and we will try again next weekend.

DPMS 5.56 didn't like the Wolf Steel ammo.. & range today.. :)
Rojodiablo replied to YWHIC's topic in Black Rifles
I agree with 98z5v. My DPMS eats WPA/ Wolf all day and night. There is something amiss with that. My DPMS is a straight up carbine, and it has a rather light buffer. My S&W has a stronger buffer for sure, and it eats the WPA also with no issues.
