  1. Cool pic, he looks a bit pissed off about being dead! Happy huntin'!
  2. I agree; staked set screws with properly dimpled barrel should be go-to-war solid. Will do a couple of builds with that approach in due time and report back after considerable rounds are expended.
  3. Weather is starting to get better for morning shoots/hunts now!
  4. The Geissele Super Gas Block is a very interesting item! Did you use the set screws at all after pinning with the coil pin?
  5. Can't hunt with night vision devices in AZ, though.
  6. 98Z5V, sure, I could see staking my set screw gas block; only downside I see is it would make it harder to later go with a different gas block. Is that your gas block of preference -- set screw type?
  7. Each rifleman must work out his own salvation regarding AR gas blocks, but it's pinned ones for me from now on. I have one with set screws and red Loctite did settle the loosening issue I had, but I could see shooting enough to melt the Loctite and get loosening again. I'll take it hunting and to the range, but won't run it hard. Don't like feeling like I always need to make sure the gas block isn't coming loose. Having said that I know quite a few rifles with set screw and clamp on gas blocks serve their owners just fine.
  8. New barrel went on with no drama, already put 75 rounds through the rifle with the new barrel and all is well. One issue, though. The pinned gas block sits about half an inch too far back to give room for putting on the original handguards. I found a set of handguards I didn't mind dremeling and MADE them fit. It doesn't matter hugely to me because at some point I'm going to be chopping the FSB and putting on a free-floated rail, but I wonder if anyone else has ever encountered this.
  9. I think the 901 is a 308 AR worth owning, it's high on my list of next rifles to acquire when funds allow.
  10. I have an SSA on my Colt 6920, an SSA-E on my "Franken-AR" that I designate as my fun/all-around/varmint AR, and an SD-E on my LR-308. The SSA is a good choice for a defensive rifle. The SSA-E is a great marksman's/hunter's trigger, light and crisp enough to satisfy just about everyone I would think. The SD-E is a flat trigger and I have to say, it is a joy to shoot with. The ability to squeeze the trigger way at the bottom makes it feel very light. So it's one to operate with a feather touch; good for fine-tuning disciplined trigger control. Your mileage may vary. But I doubt it since Geissele's triggers seem very consistent from all reports I've heard and read.
  11. For one thing, you can hunt in AZ with unlimited capacity magazines. Number one state for laws favoring gun owners. Love it here.
  12. Recently put Miculek muzzle brakes on two 5.56 ARs and one on my 308 AR. The 5.56 rifles become even sweeter to shoot but oh my gosh, are they loud now. The recoil reduction on the 308 is noticeable, now only just a bit stronger than the 5.56 AR with the factory bird cage muzzle device. Very very loud! *Have* to wear hearing protection with these puppies! Accidently had no hearing protection on when intentionally squeezing off a 5.56 round one fine morning and that was painful; not so when hunting with the old bird cage. Pro Ears or Howard Leight muffs are always in my range bag and they work fine; though I do often add plugs under the muffs when shooting the 308. Prefer the Howard Leights for hunting.
  13. New barrel and Aeroshell moly grease.
  14. Hi, I'm newer than you to this forum but also own a DPMS Oracle LR-308. I've done a few things to it and will do a few more things, it's been my project rifle and entry-level into 308 ARs, kind of how my Springfield Mil Spec 1911 was my project/entry 1911. Most of the things I think about the rifle are "general AR" items, not really particular to the 308 cartridge. I don't like GI AR triggers, prefer Geissele. I like the Magpul MOE pistol grip. I like the Magpul MS3 sling. I think castle nuts should be staked. I prefer pinned gas/front-sight blocks. I think bolt carrier groups need to be of good quality. As for optics, gosh, the choices are endless. I have an Aimpoint H1 on a Daniel Defense mount for my red dot (Larue quick-detach mounts are probably the most popular choice for the red dots), and a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 for longer range (will be upgrading to a better magnified optic) on a cantilevered mount (forget the brand name). For a rear iron sight, I use a Troy but find Magpul polymer and steel rear sights good (have a polymer on my Colt 5.56, works great). Anyway I think this DPMS model is a good starter 308 after having owned one for 2 years. I recently ordered a barrel with a pinned FSB and will swap that in as soon as it shows up at my door. Do not shoot Tula steel-cased 308 ammo (I'll discuss this more elsewhere on the forum site)! Stick with something like PMC Bronze (brass cased, good price, good track record).
  15. I didn't really move to the 308 AR, just added it. Also enjoy shooting 5.56 ARs and 7.62x39 (out of an AK); and in pistols I shoot .45 ACP (1911s) and 9mm (Hi-Powers) the most. 308 punch is very satisfying.
