I'm sure that both of those are good options for some people, but neither of them is materially different from my Vortex Sparc II, and I don't want a red dot. My issue with red dots is that when I bring the rifle to bear and look through the optic I expect to see a crosshair reticle, and it takes an instant to adjust. And while it might be only 100 miliseconds it's still wasted time. Every optic on my other rifles has a crosshair reticle and I am not going to re-train myself to look for a stinking dot. It ain't natural! If we ever get out of Wuhan Flu lockdown I'm going to do some serious shopping because my "Stimulus" check is burning a hole in my pocket! Charlie

I have a Sig MPX carbine I'm fond of. It has a set of Magpul MBUS sights, but my eyes don't see open sights as well as they used to. So I would like to locate some sort of optic for it. I already have a Vortex Sparc II, but I'm just not wild about it. I'm thinking something in the 2-4 power range with a Mil Dot reticle. I don't like red dots because they use a battery (that can go bad in a heartbeat), and I wasn't quite thinking of spending enough to get in ACOG territory (but I might 😉. Any recommendations?

Crappy tools can break under stress and cause injuries. Quality tools are worth the money even if you don't make a living with them. My dad used to say; "I don't have enough money to buy cheap tools".

I believe that is what he called it as well, but it was a long time ago, and far away.

My dad was infantry, and he trained me on what he called the "Handy Rest" when I was a kid. Basically you put your left arm through the sling and bring your hand back to the foreend creating tension and stabilizing the rifle. This is the first time I have heard of the ching sling, but it works the same way, and I setup all of my rifle slings in that fashion. What bugs me about this sling is that I don't know where it came from. I have a long standing habit of taking a series of photographs of every firearm I receive including a section called "Unboxing" where I photograph everything in the box in detail paying particular attention to the serial number and any proof marks and accessories. There is nothing in my files to indicate that this sling came with a rifle that I bought, and it's driving me nuts!

Cool! If/when you make that trip shoot me an email when you know your ETA to Shreveport and I'll meet you there. There's a pretty good place downtown just off I-20.

The mount arrived today. Yay! Evan, my contact at Wolverine, confirmed that this mount was the last one they had in stock. I guess I got lucky. Thanks to 98Z5V for the heads up! If you're ever in Shongaloo I will buy you a beer. Charlie

I found this sling in my parts box and tried it out on an AR that I built, but it's too short. The sling has two buckles close spaced, and is 1 1/4 inches wide. I'm don't know where I got the thing, but I suspect that it came with a rifle I bought. If you could shed some light on what it might have come with or its intended use I would be grateful. Charlie

I looked at the website this evening and the mount is showing "Out of stock". I guess I bought the last one. Phooey!

Thank you too much. 😊 OMG! My mind is reeling! What am I going to do for glass? And I guess I should have bought two of the Armalite EX0022 mounts instead of one. Silly me. lol I told my son that I was thinking about building an AR, and he told me I ought to do it, and gave me all sorts of reasons that I should do it. I told him that he was a bad influence on me, and that he shouldn't encourage me, because I'm encourageable! 😃 Charlie

That's it! I would say thanks, but my bank account is going to hate you. :-)

I only bough one. I want two, but one is what I need right now, and it was a bit overpriced even with the exchange rate. I'm going to keep an eye on the auction sites, and one will come up eventually.

I thought that Barrett made one, but it looks like I was in error. I too would like to see an MSR in long action: Specifically 30-06, because I like that old round. There is (or was) a company working on a 30-06 MSR. I forgot their name, but that was 10 years ago, so I guess it's not going to happen. I'm happy with my TRG-42 in .338L. It's not a semi, but I can cycle the bolt and be back on target before the first round hits, so it doesn't really matter. :-) Charlie

A nice fellow in International sales named Evan walked the order through, and my scope mount is on the way. Yay!

what do you guys do to maximize space in your gun safes?
Charlie replied to wwlefty's topic in General Discussion
My problem with guns in safes is that there's never enough room, so they get banged up. If there's one thing I hate it's seeing a good piece of equipment get banged up for no reason. I'm not going to play that game! After years of taking extraordinary care putting my guns in and out of the safe I had an idea. I don't know where it came from, but I'm proud of it: 1. Take an old worn out pair of jeans or work pants, cut the zipper out, and split them in half right down the crotch. 2. Turn the legs inside out and rip the seams on the cuffs using a single edge razor blade. 3. Flatten the leg out and sew two lines of stitches across the end to close the leg. 4. Turn the leg right side out and slip it over your longgun before putting it in the safe. Now you can bump other guns and they won't feel a thing! As a bonus you can write the make and model of the gun on the upper part of the leg so you don't have to pull it out of the safe to see what it is. Legs that are too long will cause a problem, so cut them off even with the butt stock and they won't get in the way. I wear 33X36 Wrangler jeans, and I don't have any rifles so long that they are not fully covered. Charlie (calls them "Gun Pants" lol) -
I had them in the cart but couldn't check out because their software won't accept an address that is not in Canada. I'm guessing it has to do with the exchange rate. I emailed "International Sales" and got a reply this morning telling me who to contact to buy the mounts , so we're working on it. Charlie

Thanks! I'm working on it. Charlie

I have three Armalite 30mm scope mounts (EX022. Medium height I think.) and I need at least two more! Armalite quit making these mounts. I have no idea why, but I really like them. If you have one to sell shoot me a PM. Charlie

I'm off topic. Sorry, but I ordered an M153GN18 on 11/13 and it arrived 11/18 one day after my birthday (but I don't care :-). It's a lovely piece of equipment! I was going to take it to the range last weekend, but things got in the way. And they're closed this weekend, but I'll get out there real soon. It doesn't come with sling swivels, but it takes a standard AR rear swivel (the screw is 8 X 32 X 1/2) and I added a Grovtec Key-Mod 5 slot Pic rail with push botton base to the front of the handguard, so we're good to go. Sorry to clutter up the conversation, but I can definitely recommend these. Charlie

OK. I guess my reading comprehension sucks. I reviewed the installation instructions, and it says plainly that the upper bump goes inside the handguard cap, and the other three go outside! With that in mind (and minor loss of skin on my left thumb) I was able to install the upper handguard. The lower handguard won't go because the triangular cap is too wide at that point, and the instructions were clear about that. So bright and early tomorrow morning I'm going to get a wood dowel and a hammer, and show it who's the boss. Yay!
-
That's an excellent idea! I've been wracking my brain trying to think of a product that I could modify to do that job, and you nailed it! Thanks!

Not even close, and the round handguard I looked at in the local shop had a handguard keeper ID of 1.300! The back end has four small roll pins that key into the barrel nut's fingers. Derek in tech support confirmed that this was the receiver end. The bulges on the inside of the handguard at 11, 1, 5 and 7 o'clock have holes for allen screws that you tighten down to secure and center the handguard to the barrel.
-
This is a pic of the front of the handguard. The bumps indicated by the arrows are supposed to go inside the handguard cap. Fortunately there's a gun show in town tomorrow, so I'm going to trot down there with the handguard and see what I can find. Charlie

I tried to do that today, but the place I went to had a round cap that was too small to fit the foreend's nose pins. My foreend nose measures 1.875" top to bottom and 1.825" side to side. He was kind'a baffled, and made noises about Mil Spec and stuff. I've got one or two more places to look, but it's a bit frustrating that none of the dealers mention the ID of the cap, just the OD of the barrel. My barrel measures 0.75" at the gas block.
