  1. Hello, everyone! I spoke with a few persons.. Been interested in the UBR Gen2 buttstock... still waiting for it to drop. Was told to run a H3 ar15 buffer along with the 308 rifle spring in accommodation to 3/4" longer receiver extension. This is a potential later. Lately, I have purchased my ar15 lower parts to finish out my mega. Soon, going to order the plastixrevolution 308ar block set for installing my barrel. Nearly the same price as the DPMS panther claw block. After speaking with the owner, the product seems reasonable. They are offering a 'no-nonsense' warranty. Tools fail - replaced. Justin also had time to say that if a 'tall receiver' would not fit the appropriate base tooling, he would provide the poly plates needed at no additional cost. Granted, it means waiting a few extra days to receive a second plate kit in the mail.. Current parts roster: Mega trigger + milspec fire control group and KNS gen2 pins. Criterion 18" rifle length gas SS nitride m118 chambered hybrid contour + nitride gas parts Only thing I am waiting on now, sighting system, receiver extension+buttstock and BCG. Looking at the Dwilson carrier + JP High Pressure bolt. My plans so far were to grab some fixed Troy Industry sights, a MOE rifle stock + standard A2 308 parts. Set in some grovtec limited rotation QD cups and have fun. Picked up a MS4 sling from magpul already. Who has experience with SWFA glass? I see their SWFA SS 6x mildot for ~$300. Figured, this plus some midwest industries keymod covers/hand stop, BCM keymod QD cup and seekins angled grip could address all issues on my mega MKM float tube. Give my a few options for QD locations, remain fairly light weight.. The SWFA scales in right over a pound in weight with rings. So, things are about halfway done now. This weekend I will be assembling the lower. I am currently going to run AR15 milspec hammer/disconnector springs. HOWEVER, I want to know - who is using the Wolff HEAVY HAMMER ar15 spring? I was thinking about trying the wolff XP hammer spring and reduced power disconnector spring in junction to the Mega trigger. My only thought on this, hard primers. Berdan milsurp stuff may not go boom with a standard ar15 hammer+spring. Looking forward to feedback. Things are rolling. Will be wrapped up and function testing before November. I am hoping that with the MOE stock sporting a full set of QD cups and two QD spots on the float tube it will allow easy travelling and manualing, while being more low mass. The 45raptor build is looking to begin next year.
  2. Barrels are as low as $240+S&H. one thing to keep in mind, yes it does happen to use the .875 gasblock but... it is a .452 inch bore. Also, with trend the barrels are lighter than 308 barrels of equal length. Satern markets the 45raptor barrel in 10.5 and 12.5 lengths in addition to the ones listed by RSS. Costs are relatively low if you do the work yourself. Speak with Medesha in Meza, AZ. He will discuss magazine modifications and concerns. His method of altering the follower is pretty smart. One concern he mentioned is that the rounds struggle to double stack passed ~15 rounds when utilizing the 20round magazine. The reason being these are more straight cartridges, the magazine swells. On tight magazine wells, they can be problematic with overloading. Also stated that ASC are the magazines he recommends. There is plenty of knowledge on this chambering.. you all may be impressed.
  3. I appreciate the interest, gentlemen. The raptor brass is costly, but so is decent any brass. You are factoring being in position, then firing from a long(er) distance in all instances. neither have any naysayers commented on sub 50 yard effectiveness on boar/bear. I agree - the weight is a lot. But, for the weight addition of a heavy hunting revolver it is nearly moot. The smaller rounds such as the 200 and 230 non-expanding projectiles will produce similar exit wounds to any .30" hollowpoint. Those charts were done on the 16" barrel if I understood correctly. Farther up on one page the author comments about how all testing was done with 16" barrel and all claims would be validated by such length tubing. If any of you have ever tried hunting closer distances than 200-400 yards, you would likely know the experience of shrubs, branches or otherwise "brush". Yes, I agree - it can be 'ethically' challenged about taking "unclean shots" You also bark right into the park of 'perfect scenarios'. Not going out with the intent of firing at any animal like that. I have been unlucky enough to stumble upon dog and cat dens when out. I have also been in the position, good ole .30-30 just would not inspire confidence when firing past and through pine nettles. I have seen smaller projectiles deflect and completely miss when hitting 1/4" sticks. No, the 45raptor is not a 50bmg. Nor will it ever be. However, it surely will not suffer the same issues as something a bit lighter. Yes, it agreeably is throwing a brick. But, the intended purpose is a bit different from just scrubbing something near half mile away. Last time tried stalking.. I ended up running in circles waiting for that 'clean shot'. I went hungry that night. I pursued for nearly an hour. Life is not perfect. As far as any comment goes about 'ruined game'.. I seldom eat deer ribs, the dogs however - sure enjoy a half mangled rack coming off the firepit.
  4. I would need a set of dies, barrel and magazine follower set. The brass is reasonable when throwing in the 1913 brass catching attachment from brownells. Any standard .45# reloading projectile should work when accounted for properly. I have already addressed the issues of cyclic control and action. I will leave it a moot point. Documentation will be highly limited. Pictures later. In response, the reloading supplies are on par with the .308 winchester.. Quality brass to brass, powder costs. As to why not having multiple calibers per trip? Same reason why people go insane with those wildey pistols or hunting revolvers. It makes the trip more enjoyable. Perhaps, you are hunting northern america and want to shoot a moose. That ten rounds of 45raptor could be a nice comfort while trekking to your 'camp' for that one chance shot. Then, for just a few pounds more.. you swap out to that 308win or 6.5x47 and fire from one of those ten round magazines. Not all too much weight here. I've never been on any real hike where there was not a breather at some time. We all move at our own pace. It is not like we are talking about a timed event.
  5. A big bore hunting cartridge delivering effective terminal performance on medium to large North American game animals including Deer, Hogs, Elk, Moose and Bear within 200 yards. What others have dropped from said list? Two rifles weigh more than one. If you are going pack-lite, I am already in to a five round bolt-action using a 6.5x47... I think the mindset here is being missed. This is a do-all build. The 5.56 and 300AAC "1.5 rifles" has proven to be both quite functional and well met.
  6. http://www.45raptor.com/45RAPTOR/performance/ For those of you who still will not read: Using a 16.0 inch barrel, the following performance has been obtained keeping within the designed pressure specifications of the cartridge and the rifle. 200-Grain Hornady FTX = 2650-2850 FPS 225-Grain Honorary FTX = 2400-2600 FPS 230-Grain Sierra FMJ RN = 2400-2600 FPS 240-Grain Hornady XTP MAG = 2400-2600 FPS 250-Grain Hornady FTX = 2300-2500 FPS 300-Grain Hornady XTP MAG = 2000-2300 FPS -------------------------- This cartridge is producing 3000lbs+ of energy in most full load settings. 230gr @ 2600fps = ~3400lbs of muzzle energy.
  7. Have any of you checked out the photographs page on the 45raptor webpage? I mean... it seems like none of you are actually looking at what this is. Why would I want to use a chambering that produces 1/2" holes guaranteed.. that will blow through steel plates and small trees to boot? Never mind it produces more muzzle energy than the 308 winchester? Or.. that it fires fairly flat for it's initial trajectory? Let me think... Because.. While yes the 308 does produce reasonable results from 200-800yards, it still is not in the same ballpark as a 460S&W magnum from closed chamber in close quarters. It runs on the ar308 platform. enough said. same box magazines, just modify the follower. It uses the same bolt. A barrel change and modified magazine is all you need. a 20round 308 magazine = 20 rounds of 45raptor (rimless 460 smith wesson magnum). It is easier to shoot through brush when fired from short barrels using heavy and large diameter projectiles. Never mind aim, transition and otherwise traverse. Not only those reasons but.. For the cost to build a second lower, I can have two or three uppers matching my single 'multi-cal' lower. Yea, the extra ten pounds for an upper and a few magazines is extra.. You have very little real-estate consumed when packed properly. Most packing gear will easily fit those shapes, while leaving ample room for 10yards of 550 cord, a few various fire starters, a life straw, multi-tool, carbide dogtag sharpener and three liters of water. Throw in a few bags of jerky and dried goods.. We are not talking a full battle rattle loadout here. My SOC four panel sack still has room for a thermal blanket, small binoculars, collapsing saw and a few other ends. I am pretty positive that is plenty when leaving basecamp.
  8. That 45raptor uses the same dimensional box magazine. look at the weblink I posted. they simply cut the follower and install a spacer up front allowing hollowpoints to feed. I want 1.5 rifles because, I am able to carry on a prolonged hike 1.5 rifles much easier in a backpack than I am to sling and drag two. Think of it like this.. one bolt carrier group, one lower, one sling. the lower shares the same box mag platform. how long will it take to remove a backpack, open it.. remove a magazine and upper from bag, utilize the take down pins and swap uppers. Zero is retained for each 'rifle'. Finish with packing away the other upper and magazine. Far less weight to carry and use. It allows very powerful brush gun usage with an ability to precision shoot out to medium range. Finally, because I can spread half the load onto my back and shoulders it is going to be much less fatiguing than two rifles. ... I have no friends. ;-) Reason being: 'get yer own damn rifle!' Jokes aside, I am likely to use a standard maten upper with a carbon float tube for the 308. The keymod rail will be for the raptor. Do not really need flashlights for a feral hog on the 308 with the 45raptor doing what it does out to 150 yards easily.
  9. It goes without saying... I am saving up for an extra mega MKM upper... Going to carry the 308 upper in a backpack while hunting. Use the 45raptor for the humping, the 308 for the distance. This looks pretty slick. Also, looks nice for short rifle bay work when at multi-gun. A quick upper swap and I can cover distance at the next bay. Is anyone else getting a woody over this chambering?
  10. http://www.45raptor.com/45RAPTOR/ So... I am not asking who has one - because my bank roll is a bit tight right now.. BUT... anyone heard of this yet?
  11. Thanks robocop! I like the input. I forgot all about those chamberings.. Anyone have experience with reloading quality of the 450BM brass by hornady? I know starline does not produce any.. they do the 458 socom but, I think the 450 seems better. Longer length, more velocity.
  12. my thoughts. I was thinking for the price, i could pick up a few ASC magazines and see how the mega likes them. If the various ar308 sr25 pattern rifles like them, pick up a surplus. I really like the basis of those lancer magazines. Wanted them badly too. Just, I am getting to be more frugal. That is a bit of difference in quantity.. which follows the logic posted above: 'never too many mags'
  13. I have heard from multiple sources that hollowpoints under high recoiling rounds will dimple and chew the interior wall of the plastic magazines. which, is why certain(not magpul) plastic magazine manufacturers will line them with steel inserts. I was originally leaning towards the newest lancer magazines but... for $50/per I can afford two steel magazines that are rated to handle cartridges at the same length. I am sure the 'weight reduction' can be nice, however - I only anticipate that the 25round lancer magazine will weigh more than the twenty round steel magazine upon full capacity. Are five extra rounds worth double the cost? =\ I am hard on things too.. Appreciate everyone's responses! So, any experience with the ammo storage components company? They came recommended for an ar308 build using the 284 cartridge. I just happened to be standing around when some guys where chatting about it. Looked into that company and seem intrigued enough now.
  14. What magazine do you prefer? I have been looking around. Lancer, Magpul.. some options are out there. In my searches I found this company: http://www.ammosc.com/308-sr-25/ Please, post which magazine your prefer and why. Loadings will be at longer lengths. I know both lancer and magpul offer magazines capable of ~2.83" COAL. The linked SS magazines are ~2.86" COAL friendly. All inputs are desired. Wanting to know which mags work the best and what are junk. I have been informed that the plastic magazines fear hollowpoints, if anyone can post their experience with that... please do!
  15. Hey there everyone! So.. I was looking in to an AR45 DI build.. Except, I was looking at the 45super chambering. Then, things ran all amuck. Could not get the velocity I was wanting out of it according to quickload, after playing with plenty of powders. I am well aware of this wondrous cartridge known as the 45 win mag. Maybe someone else here knows of it.. Well... where to start; So.. I am able to modify ar15 GI mags into being single stack and holding seven or ten rounds (20rd or 30rd magazines). I like the ballistic advantage the winmag offers over the 45super. But, being 0.300" longer in brass length will assist in many facets. I realized while investigating that, the 45winmag happens to be very similar in dimensions to the 308/30'06 brass diameters.. Has anyone done a 45 winmag, 45 wildey or 475 wildey on the ar308 platform? The ar308 magazines offer a substantial increase of capacity. I know, the longer and heavier bolt carrier coupled with stiffer springs make issues. Though, with proper timing of gas port locations and buffer mass it should be manageable. Not wanting to get in to the thicket of the sciences. As for reasoning - Was initially looking at an AR pistol build for competition and hunting use. When packing around the hills and brush, range is limited and a full length rifle is a bit challenging in some ways.
  16. Yup. I was chatting with D.Wilson today via email. he said he was uncertain whether or not they were still in stock. Hoping to hear good news tomorrow. Likely to pick one up this week if he still actually has some sitting. He also mentioned that the master rebuild kit which shows zero on the webpage could be had, as he has plenty of spare parts. Thinking a master kit + a blem BCG is about to be purchased for my mega..
  17. Thank you shepp. Words sometimes have two meanings. Appreciate your assistance.
  18. Alright. Sounds good.
  19. Watch out washguy.. wifey gonna be spending your money while chitchatting.. Them hardbody military popo fellows probably work on a commission base. You be at work one day and get a huge, hard pain in the ass. Go home to find out she bought "you" a rifle. That young guy is going to be grinning ear wide while making hump motions in the air saying 'hello mrs. wash!' You will be about like me - back on cans of tuna and no dinner dates. Friggan MEGA MKM receiver set.. Best of luck. Maybe you find something good in there during the reconnaissance mission. But, be sure to wear plenty of compact for breakup and some fatkid tacticool shirt. Like Call of Duty Ghosts or something.
  20. how else will I get the SLR non-adjusting gas block to stay affixed? Just thread in the one set screw and let it hang?
  21. Not too bad! Sharp looking receiver set. Let us know how that barrel groups. I had long ago thought about a very similar build. Congratulations!!
  22. interesting... guess i will get a dimple drilling tool anyways. what is an extra $40. Thanks!
  23. Does the hybrid contour ar308 barrel come dimpled already?
  24. Playing around with the MOE rifle stock ar15, slide mic and the dpms carbine.. seems like the 2.010" centerline over flattop should not be too bad.. The UBR seems like it has a decent slop to the comb. It appears near like the MOE rifle. Thinking the ADM recon-h QD mount, burris xtr II 2-10x42 FFP and the heavy buffer 6.5oz buffer+spring combo. Can atleast buy a carbine to rifle spacer and if later I want an a2 extension tube.. swap should be relatively straightforward and offer same feel. Thank you everyone. Things seem to be coming down to funds and time. Also - has anyone seen the UBR in stock for stealth gray? I think AIMsports had it in stock, but everywhere else shows out of stock with varied standings of back-order go/no-go.. Either way, barrel first. Hoping in two or so more weeks Criterion still has more of the one I want in stock.
