Dead hogs, coons, squirrels and cow afterbirth. Anything else? We are going to focus really hard on them this summer they did a lot of damage to livestock in 2016. It never dawned on me they might like something other than rotting carcass.

Bipod/squeeze bag or sled for field setup?
buttonbuck replied to buttonbuck's topic in General Discussion
Yea it's a potential day wrecker for stretching it out. Oddly laying prone takes care of all that, but it's so stinking wet here in FL in the summer when this will happen that....well...I'm just not that dedicated to lay down in the mud to shoot longer. -
I made a post last week about a shooting bench we can move around some fields to stretch out to 1k. Settled on a bench design and will make it as soon as the sawhorse legs get here. I'm going to make the assumption I will probably never have a perfectly level setup in the field. Close, but not bench rest squared up. We all have pivot bipods with pod locks and squeeze bags. Is that the best option for 'mobile benching'? Would we be better off investing in a lead sled? Seems like a bipod with pod lock and a squeeze bag might give us the best shot at squaring things up? I know there are plenty of folks here who have been there and done that.....thanks for the input

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?

FL. They have chased out some gorgeous bucks this season who just seek life elsewhere. Frustrating. -

I picked mine up as a cockroach gun and it will probably stay that way b/c I truly love the weight of my Weatherby for hiking around deer season it's a svelte setup. The toilet bugs come in by the dozen it's just not possible for me to take as many with a bolt vs semi-auto.....wish I were that good! -
After some education via a PM I'd like to add MechArmor TacOps Sniper to the top of the list and since they are sold out I'm hoping to find someone who didn't like theirs! Thanks

Ok good to know. I like something that easy we can jump on a quad rip down the field stuff it in the mud and go back to the bench easily. We get so much rain in central FL much of the year the fields are a mess. If you walk 800 yards it's half an hour, can't drive a truck and a quad is all that can get through it. We will be setting up the bench on a road as it's one of the few doable places in the wet months.

Yea I'm looking at a few different ones just slap some locking saw horse legs on to a tapered plywood cut maybe drop some AutoZone carpet and it's donezo. I read where a cooler gets you close enough to the right height where different sized people can just add a towel, pad or something to get it perfect. Was pondering how a chair with legs would be on open field typically soft for us lots of rain......cooler would distribute the weight out much better. Thanks all! Saw some plans for using rebar as the verticals on a portable gong stand. We already have tons of conveyor belt for the existing range gongs. Use some metal tubing to bend into 90's for the cross member. 'Goinnnnnnnnnnnnng!'
-
While we are at it if anyone has some suggestions for an inexpensive portable gong setup I'd love to hear what you have as well. Thanks all
-
I tried that as I have one sitting in my garage, but even if I turn it diagonal I can't get close enough to the rifle to get comfy and on the diag it's not long enough. Need a tapered cut out along the length of the rifle to get closer.

I just know there are some smart folks on here who have wanted and succeeded in making a portable shooting bench/table/seat? We have the ability to stretch out to 1000 yards no problem on the property, but have never done it. Well a few of us want to get 'er dun this spring and want to see what the possibility is of making something reasonably portable. We are definitely not buying one of these $500+ setups b/c we spend most of our time hunting not shooting paper. That said if we can make something reasonably inexpensive we will give it a rip. Thanks for any tips, advice or even better a google sketch up of your awesome table!

Yes that is correct

Or will consider another make/model just let me know what you have. I have some trade bait if that fits.....brand new Rogers Adjustable stock never used took it off on day 1 for a BCM. Thanks
-
Nice thanks. BC makes my all time fav cartridge sling can't even tell you how old it is glad you brought them up.

Anyone have a suggestion for some that have stood the test of time for ya? They all seemed like they would last....until they didn't. Tired of it thinking I might just go back to 2 covers on a bungee at this point. Was about to try the Vortex line unless one of you says run from them. Thanks for the input

Central/Gulf Coast Florida 308 shooters

Just to further your CS theme here I finally had a chance to talk to Chris on the phone at length the other day(delay was not due to them it's been me too busy to even scratch myself lately). Was more than patient and extremely thorough with the Q and A. Emailed with someone as well who was more than prompt and professional. I'm down to either getting the insanely great deal on the 16" carbine or the Sub MOA 18" BA model. Not sure I can go wrong with either, but having a can coming sometime in the summer given the wait fulfillment/paper work trail I'm leaning on the 16 just for 2" less length they are only 2 oz apart I think. Super sexy looking cerakote wow. If anyone here has purchased one of his complete rifles I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. -
I'm going to be ordering a 16" Live Free Armory here in the next couple of weeks and I'd greatly appreciate any input on Vortex. I have been very happy with Nikons on various rifles from muzzleloaders to a few different bolts to a couple of AR's. No reason to leave Nikon really they hold zero great and I beat the crap out of them they just keep on ripping. That said I have watched Vortex owners locally and both my friends love theirs. Seem to have a warranty as good as Nikon maybe better I don't know they have not had to use it. I think my excuse will be I just like to try new stuff and after looking through my friend's 6.5-20 I was shocked at the clarity. Almost exclusively hog hunting, but this could become my deer rifle by next fall. Any specific models you'd recommend? I don't spend much time on benches under cover I hunt in the rain, stuff gets banged around etc. Long shot would be ~250 at a coyote in a field, most stuff ~ 100. 6x is not a bother to me even as close as say 80 yards, but I'm wondering if I might just do the 6-18 vs the 6.5-20 it was a lot less $. Would be grateful for any input from your Vortex shooters thanks

Would you be able to expound on the unthreaded barrel beyond your statement please? Does Witt have bad issues with their clamp on brake? While I don't have much experience beyond the Witt clamp I shot the other day it certainly performed well for me/him. Just want to make sure I don't buy something that is dangerous or something with the clamp on brake.
-
What kind of brake do you have there? I'm currently chatting with a local guy who has a setup I like in the 308B with rifle length stock. Problem is it's unthreaded and I have not heard back from Witt if they can make a clamp on big enough for that barrel profile which I believe is ~ .920". Shot a friends .308 700remmy last week with a Witt clamp on brake it was like shooting a .223 at most I watched the flight trail and hit all the way to the gong 'ping!'. Never been able to do that with any bolt. Specifically: are you able to keep your target in the reticle from 'boom' until impact?

Thanks they have been on my radar for some time just backordered. Great looking stuff. After all my used searching and inspections I'm thinking I might have to ditch the Christmas time frame for dad and just wait it out and get him one of these LFA's when they fill. Not having been a regular used firearm guy from people I don't know I have been shocked at the disrepair and condition of the rifles I went to see off ArmsList. Y I K E S. Perhaps not indicative of the masses, but I've seen enough to lean back new if I don't know the person.
-
I have viewed a couple of AR's in the past days from ArmsList and was bitterly disappointed. Poorly maintained across the board and one was even non functional. I had to beg the guy to let me break it down and once I did it was clearly a scam. So I figured I would try my luck at possibly finding a local 308AR member who has a rifle looking for a new home. Don't need anything fancy and cost containment is important, but I also realize you get what you pay for in many respects. I don't need fancy trigger upgrades, furniture, slings, cases, glass or anything else. I have more scopes and ancillary equipment than anyone should probably own. A bare bones rifle and a single mag would suit us just fine. Feel free to contact me if you are local and while I do thank you for any offers from abroad I just like to operate where I can put my hands on what I'm going to buy when it comes to firearms. Thanks for your time and have a great day.

Tahnks! There is a nice 8 who keeps taunting a camera I'm going to try and stuff in my freezer this evening.

Thanks for the info on the 300 I have a couple of friends who shoot that platform and enjoy it. We just have so many piles of 308 and it's served so well it's an ain't broke don't fix scenario. I have run across a hand full of local 308's I'm going to take a look at over the next few days from ArmsList so the wheels are churning thanks for the input all. One might work out really well he's keen on trading for my minty Colt HBAR which just stares at the walls inside the safe would be perfect scenario for me. Fingers crossed.
