  1. Thanks all I agree that is a great price.
  2. Interesting on the rifle stock for less recoil wasn't aware of that, but I will say my old Colt HBAR is like shooting a 22 I can stay down on anything with that as fast as I can squeeze off a round. Maybe that is part of the reason I had always put it up to the heavy barrel. Buying a complete rifle and I'm digging all the variations DPMS has on their 308's pretty much something to suit just about everyone. Have found a few on ArmsList for well under 1k with ancillary items might wait a week or so and see if I can find a screaming deal on a bare bones stock rig.
  3. Not crazy at all the round-ish heat shield guard is my favorite for AR's I'm not into hanging a bunch of stuff off my rifles don't need the rails up front just somthing functional for my support hand. Great looking rig hope I can find my way into something like that!
  4. Good gravy that is a price! Is this what you have? http://www.dpmsinc.com/308-ORACLE_ep_99-1.html If you don't mind letting me know where you purchased it from either that would be great. That is an insane price!
  5. HI guys thanks for the input. Any DPMS owners out there have any feelings on the dozen or so configurations of the 308 they offer would love to hear. Thanks again!
  6. Wondering if anyone here might be willing to shed some light on narrowing down the vast array of DPMS 308 options for me. This will be a hog hunting specific rifle for my dad. I've only fired a couple of 16" 308's. Sig 716 and a PWS and factory out of the box I was shocked how well I could stay down on the target and re-acquire for quick follow up shots. I can only imagine what they might have been like with a brake of some kind. 99% of the game will be from say 75-125 yards at most. Would love to hear what DPMS owners like/dislike and which direction you might push me. Chances are great this will be set up with a reflex sight/no mag it's just not necessary at his distances he shoots irons as it is right now and is happy as a clam kills a lot of pigs. I think my primary goal would be to get a setup that is reasonably tame so he can get on follow up shots quickly it's not uncommon for them to come in groups of up to 10 where he is so hammer down repeating is desirable. Maybe they all behave that way with a brake? Do I need to consider one? Thanks for any thoughts and Happy Thanksgiving
  7. Wow thanks all! This place is great I'm definitely drinking from a fire hydrant lots to digest.
  8. I shoot 147's in my 24" bolt and I'm going to give them a 'shot' anyway just to see if I can keep my ammo stash as is w/o loading up new stuff. this gun is for dad and he's all 223/ar15 currently, but would be nice if i could hand him the new rifle with 500 rounds of go get 'em. If i can get 2 moa I will probably just leave it be all he is looking at is 50 to maybe 120 at most for hog hammering and 2 moa will kill that all day long.
  9. Same story here my rifles/ammo are way better than I am. Thanks for the pictures that's aok in my book!
  10. Oh wow nice! Privi Partisan really impressed me with the few boxes I put through my .223 I think it was 55g super accurate. Will have to check out their 308 thanks.
  11. You are so right. AND to boot I didn't have my thinking cap on.....wanted to know what factory loads people were using not handloads. I'm not quite with the time frame to allow me to do enough reloading as I live in my car for work and when I get home the pile of 'to do' is large. Would just like to get an idea what kind of accuracy you folks are getting out of shorter barrels with off the shelf ammo. Diggin in to the reloading page....thanks for the heads up.
  12. Would be interested to read what kind of accuracy you are getting from 147, 168....whatever it happens to be. Since I'm only familiar with a 24" .308 in a bolt I haven't done much looking into a shorter barrel and what kind of delivery I can expect. Especially if you have any chrono data I'd love to read that too. Thanks guys really appreciate the input so far in my brief time here this place is great.
  13. I've pondered it for some time. Oddly my mantra over the years has been 'the correct number of firearms to own is whatever you currently own plus one more!'. As of late though I have ben decluttering my life in all areas. If I am not using it it's gone. If I can shoot with the same accuracy or close enough as my trusty bolts w/o picking up maintenance hassles and about the same weight, but gain semi auto and lose some recoil? Even for a simpleton like me that's a win. I'v never been crazy about cheek weld on AR's, but with the magpul I can rectify the comb height and length of pull easily.
  14. That's awesome. Being self-employed and an entrepreneur I love to see people building their business the right way. Not just doing the right thing, but going above and beyond. Looking forward to meeting him and putting eyes on the guts of this particular cannon: http://www.livefreearmory.com/product/lf308-16-tactical-carbine/
  15. I have a few people coming by to look at my old HBAR and if I get what I want I may be showing up to his place soon
  16. I believe so if memory serves with some messages I have exchanged with another member he ran Central FL Firearms? They look fantastic, yet to break one down and inspect it, but I will in the near future
  17. Thanks for the input I agree. I've never had one ounce of DI issues so I'm already predisposed to staying that way. The one aspect of AR's I've never loved is getting a good weld. I've built up some homemade comb risers, but it's nothing like I get on my bolt. I like the Magpul adjustable and would get that on the LFA or any build which further separates my loyalty from the bolt setup which is like taking a nap on the stock once my weld is locked in.
  18. Great thanks. I'm probably neurotic with cleaning them, but then again I'm kind of weird that I enjoy it most times it's a bit relaxing. I'm a ways from purchasing, but I'm eyeing the LFA stock 16" tactical he has on sale for 1k. This will be sighted in with cheap ammo for MPBR for dad and hoggin and those shots are max 100-125 yards. Whatever velocity he is losing with a 16" is a non issue really for his uses. Honestly that suits my needs too with a vital zone of say 8" on what I shoot pretty much any 308 will roll 'em up good enough. I don't mind admitting I'm a bolt dork I love mine, but I could see the 308 semi-auto becoming every gun I could want all in one since anything beyond ~ 150 yards is just playing with targets for me. Not trying to win a match with calipers just take meat out to maybe 150 and gongs for who buys dinner. This has been a long time coming, but I think the 308 AR is where I'm headed
  19. And as an aside the piston idea may not really be advantageous in the end the fouling has to go somewhere it just seems to me it collects at the front with the gas block/regulator vs the bcg. I'm just spit balling here. I have seen more than one piston AR have issues from lack of cleaning too. Really just trying to get you experienced 308 guys to dump your brain power on me!
  20. So I'm going through a lot of thoughts in recent weeks on the 308 semi auto platform. Originally it was a 308 for dad, but dang you know how it goes now I'm pondering building one up myself first and getting it all tweaked and then giving it to him or if I fall in love with it keep it and build him another one. I'm going to be checking out Live Free's rifles in the next few weeks, liking what I read about DPMS and even read some nice stuff on Ruger's offering(in the back of my mind with dad's lack of affinity for cleaning his rifles at this stage in his life since he knows I will do it for him I like the idea of a piston to keep the gunk out of the equation a bit more until I can be with him). Are there any experienced folks near Tampa, FL by chance?
  21. I'm going to be checking out a local guy with Live Free Armory about 90 minutes away. Seems like a nice alternative to have the hands that make it readily available if there is an issue I can't resolve. Thanks all for the input
  22. HI guys thanks to both. Well darn the 716 Patrol is one I'm somewhat familiar with, but I'm glad to know it now I was looking at that as a potential. On the PSA also good to know. I was definitely aware of the 308 platform 'free for all' with parts and whatnot. That's why I came here to learn from you guys. AR 15's.....Ive build so many I can't count. AR 10 I'm in 1st grade. I do have a line on an ArmaLite Model A not far from me.....going to possibly take a look at it. Any thoughts on that rifle?
  23. Hello all long time lurker first time poster. Have been shooting the AR15 platform since the mid 80's, but am new to the AR10 world. My dad is starting to do more hunting especially hogs and I'd like to get him something he can take out during rifle season as well. I bought his a cheap PSA AR 15 maybe 5 years ago and he pounds Tula and Wolf through it like mad it just runs like a top for him. That said all he has been doing is hitting gongs and tearing up paper. Steel just suits him well and he's set on buying it for play time. Now I'm wanting to surprise him with an AR 10 platform for meat in the freezer and hog patrol. Soooo. While he will use higher quality loads that ensure he gets the kind of expansion he wants in a deer I know he isn't going to waste that ammo on hogs. I don't even do that I use cheap range ammo in my bolt gun and drop them in their tracks. So ultimately when dad wants to plink and hog is their an AR 10 platform that excels with cheap steel cased ammo? He pounds Ballistol in his PSA and never has any issues in his direct impingement setup. I've heard piston designs can be a bit more friendly to the bcg/chamber with respect to getting dirty. The steel ammo is just something he's gonna do b/c he shoots a ton and I want to give him the best chance he has at worry free operation, but didn't wnat to make an assumption that his PSA expericne with steel would continue on with other makes/models of the AR 10. Thanks for any guidance on AR10 platforms I might look at for him.
