  1. I was just thinking about that as my next subject of discussion. my goal with it is 750, any reason aside from added wind drift that 750 would be unattainable with 16"?
  2. Will do. Probably tomorrow evening. I like the quality control around here
  3. Anyone know how I can edit my original post? I have two changes to make now and figured I'd update it to reflect the current state of the build
  4. Jtallen I was in the right place at the right time during my stay at ft. Bragg and was given the opportunity to attend two shooting schools. One was an urban DM school that was a week long. The other was a field expedient calculations and shooting position type of school. I don't know what they were officially titled as because they were taught by a gentleman out of Washington who ran a law enforcement marksmanship school. A couple years later I landed in ft. Polk, LA and in our time out of rotations, I was able to take a group of joes every so often for a couple days with recon platoon to screw around "test" with different things. The most important thing of them all was avoiding slings and supported positions at all times for DMs. Most of them were only issued long barreled A4s (not a floated barrel) so the training was mostly calculating windage, working with our ACOG bdc, and shooting off of the magazine in lieu of a supported position to avoid changing the poi. The other situations were focused on proving that barrel contact can change poi and should be avoided as much as possible. I hope that makes sense.
  5. Mikedaddy, I've seen them before but never have used one. I always thought they seemed to gimmicky I guess
  6. Matt.cross my experience with it is nothing remotely close to the experience and knowledge you gentleman have, this is why I'm enjoying your talking me into getting this handguard. I'm settled now, if it fails I'm blaming you guys. If it's a success, I'm taking all of the credit. Haha, I like this forum. You fellas are incredibly helpful.
  7. Matt.cross i appreciate the input, I'm definitely a novice in this particular department. I was an 11B
  8. Haha, calm your tits there fritz! When I buy this handguard, call my besties at super duper high speed video takers world, and they tell me I was right....Imma get judge Judy on your tail and we're going to handle this like adolescent schoolgirls.
  9. Dont mistake your different experiences with the only way things were done. We used to spend days and sometimes a week at a time on the known distance ranges charting poa/poi in various weather conditions, bore temperatures, floated/unfloated with sling or supported, resting pens and sticks against barrels, contact with bushes....etc. The results were incredibly eye opening.
  10. So I'm going to be stubborn, my math shows that there will be just north of 1/8" clearance between the gas block and the jl billet handguard. With any flex in the handguard combined with the harmonics of the barrel, I'm not sure I'm convinced it will be enough. I've seen high speed video of the stresses these things endure with every shot and it is impressive what they go through. I can't imagine I'll get nearly that kind of flex out of the proof research barrel but I don't know that it's worth the risk. Any first hand experience with this would be monumental in helping me make my decision.
  11. We used to do a lot of harmonics effect testing with our rifles in the military that were aimed specifically at how things such as slinging into the rifle or laying down in tall grass will change the point of impact. This was very obvious on our dm rifles with a government profile barrel at 500yds. It all kinda makes me paranoid about things contacting the barrel.
  12. Thanks shepp, I wasn't clear enough. The barrel nut issue was with regard to making my own handguard with a tube that would have to slide over the outside of the barrel nut. I had the brigand arms barrel nut in mind. I'm going to do some math but it sounds like I'll be able to use the jl billet handguard.
  13. Jt, the issue being the outside diameter large enough to accommodate a tube that would clear the gas block. I just had a conversation with my smith about it and it sounds like I'm fabricating a problem that doesn't really exist
  14. The inside diameter is .875", the outside is 1.52" vertically, and 1" across. With the clamp on style, it will only leave around 1/8" or less at the bottom on most lighter handguards I've looked at. I'm not convinced that will be enough. I'm going to have a bipod and with my giant melon resting on top of it, I'm concerned it will contact the gas block. For reference, the jl billet handguard has 1.52" inside diameter and will have just north of 1/4" on either side and close to 1/8" below the screws on the bottom. Here is where my inexperience shows, feel free to point out any flaws in my logic because in a perfect world, I would love to use the jl billet handguard.
  15. Just did a little digging on it, definitely my favorite stock so far. Thanks for the recommendation.
  16. Look at you guys giving me good ideas on stocks. I'll check it out. The most important thing is that it can mount on the existing receiver extension so I can swap out easily. I was also considering jl billet's modular stock
  17. Yeah that's my thoughts exactly. Also, if I'm planning on having to defend my kill or hunt something that will kill me back, I'll probably be carrying ten pounds of ammo. I can always adjust the ammo weight according to lazy I am that particular day.
  18. I've heard nothing but great things about them, they just look a little bulky for my taste I think. I should probably give it a little more consideration before writing it off.
  19. Again, I never said loaded. Nice rifle though. I considered starting with an oracle
  20. Mikedaddy, I like that idea. I've only found one barrel nut that will work to fit a tube large enough to clear the obnoxiously sized gas block.
  21. Oh no sweat here, I'm a veteran ball buster/bustee. I have no intention of building a 1k yd laser as of yet. I'm staying practical right now. I know what I'm actually capable of and it's definitely not 1k yds. Like I said 10" grouping at 750 is my current goal. The primary focus in that is my ability to compensate for weather consistently enough to put rounds on target at that range. That's an entirely different subject though.
  22. I'm picking up on some sarcasm. That's completely unwarranted as those parts look perfectly practical.....
  23. Haha, wise words.
  24. Holy butt sack, that sounds like having your cake and eating it too
  25. Turns out I'm not capable of the edit, I'll note for future posts though. Thanks, Chuck
