The gentle reminder to not be so slow has sparked me back to the range. I am glad to report that all of the advice and help has yielded me a very functional rifle. No more tuning was needed. Fired 7.62 and 308 from various manufacturers with no failures. I was more than impressed, didn’t even realize just how much a little machining could do. I am very grateful to everyone who helped me. Thank you all very much. The next one will be DPMS upper and M5 lower that was a salvage.

Sorry that I am old and slow, so finally took the M5 build to the range and once again 98Z5V was spot on. Just couldn’t get enough gas though it took lock back on empty mag, didn’t even make it to cycling a magazine. I took the adjustable block off and machined it to .096, dropped the buffer to 5.1 oz. When I get off my you know what, get back to range and try, try,try again. Thanks again for the knowledge.

Received 13MAY24 ARMALITE AR-10T 60th Anniversary

Oooh that is very nice, good job -
Good day everyone, does anyone have anything to say about the Aero Precision phosphate 308, 6.5 bolt carrier group? It appears to have the rounded ejector, high pressure bolt and firing pin, etc. Looking for any issues or complaints with it, or any good feelings too, thanks everyone.

Wow, that ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would take, but here is the finished product. I really do not want to go to an indoor range, but the weather is just not working out. So it used the Armalite rifle tube to get right in the center of the cutout, orange spring, Aero tube, and 5.4OZ buffer. So want to go shooting and see how it runs. Thanks everyone for the guidance and for 98Z5V pointing out what I had so that I did not scrap the upper. If everything works out, a scope may be in the future for it.

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
Primeh1alpha replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I had plenty of the 5.56 while I served my time, and enjoyed every minute of it. But the M60 was my favorite, I wish i could have one of those. But when I was young my father and me enjoyed many outings hunting for elk and mule deer, our favorite was the .308 and .270, so this was my kind of longing for good times and my military times all rolled into one past time. And now my son is also getting hooked on the big boys, so more quality time. -
Thanks for the info. I might look into the “gift card” idea that might not be able to be tracked very easily

Chuck Mawhinney, 75, passed on February 12, 2024
Primeh1alpha replied to 98Z5V's topic in General Discussion
I didn’t know that he had even made a book, or really even discussed his service time. Was also sad to hear about his passing. Had to find out from my daughter who was close to him. Strange how small the world seems at times. RIP and God bless him. -
Ok, sad to hear Pay Pal does that, I have never had any problems or issues, my Cabela’s and Bass Pro cards have treated me well. If I could I would definitely pay cash, if I’m buying local or even in a surrounding state most times I will. So I too being fully aged LOL, with appropriate equipment, still are curious about being safe from Big Brother alternatives. Brainstorm

Ok, that seems reasonable, but not very much fun, sometimes you just need a tiny little project to keep you entertained.

Does anyone think that using PayPal may be a way around the new track and trace concerns with credit cards or back to old times cash or money orders? Western Union used to be a thing, but I don't think so anymore. All of this government intrusion into everything you do is starting to become very worrisome, or I may be old and paranoid. LOL
-
Oops, just realized that I put this in the wrong area, sorry
-
Just out of curiosity has anyone ever tried to take the square ejector and make it into the round type or at least removed the edge enough to make a functional item? Maybe this is a bit crazy, just something that seems like it would be possible. Could be a really bad idea.

Aero Precision Carbine Buffer Tube
Primeh1alpha replied to Primeh1alpha's topic in General Discussion
Ok, just checked all three of my buffer tubes and thank goodness all of them are just under 7" . Really very close to the magic 6 and 15/16. At least with my poor Dewalt tape measure (seen some better days) There may be a chance that I'm reading way too much stuff and getting a little freaked at times. -
Aero Precision Carbine Buffer Tube
Primeh1alpha replied to Primeh1alpha's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the info once again, off with the tape measure to find out for sure, never had the M5 kit, just bought the tubes only. Only used the highly recommended orange springs and also the buffers. Did not want to go down that rabbit hole not even once (read way too many horror stories here) And good sir any wisdom you hand out is WAY more than the advertised 2 cents. You all have a good evening and thanks once more. -
once again thanks you all for the info. Keeping me on the straight and narrow
-
Ooops took me a while to respond, sorry. I guess I was just wondering if anyone had had any success with any other carbine length buffer spring, keep hearing alot about this "flatwire" spring that never wears out, and is quiet, sounds a little bit like maybe some magic LOL
-
Big thank you to 98Z5V for the information. The Aero lower came in and the standard fire control group and kit (also Aero M5) and have put it all together, and it mated up perfectly with almost zero gap or wobble, still waiting for a couple of little parts to show up and off to the range (I hope) will put up some pictures soon, maybe this Sunday.

It seems that there is some kind of issue or concern with the Aero Precision carbine buffer tube assembly, so far I have used 3 of the enhanced versions without any apparent issues so far, is the length of the tube a problem?, all 3 have orange springs, 2 with 5.7oz buffers and 1 with 5.3oz buffers. Just wondering about it, quality issue?, long term concern perhaps? If there is concern, what is the general consensus as the best tube (carbine length). As always any input or suggestions are always greatly appreciated.

A little quick question for everyone or anyone for that matter. I’m aware that the general consensus is that only 2 springs are accepted for carbine buffer tubes (7”). Was just wondering if there was any other springs that were acceptable, other than Sprinco or Armalite. Someone has probably already asked this. Turns out that I’m not so good at looking up specific topics, I hope to get better. Thanks in advance

Thank you once again, so glad that you share your knowledge. Ordered an Aero M5 lower from Brownells for an awesome price and got and Aero lower complete kit with FCG from OpticsPlanet with leftover credit. Should come in under $200. Glad I didn’t scrap the whole thing now. Give me a couple weeks to build and maybe get to test. Hopefully the weather will get better. You guys are best.

Thanks for all that information, maybe I can salvage the BCG and barrel that came with it and place it on a matching set, it does have the correct length gas tube, an ok freefloat handguard, and a clamp on superlative arms adjustable gas block, the upper looks kind of strange anyway
-
Thank you for all the advice, very good stuff. The thing that is going on now is that I have a upper from Davidson Defense (called a Ghoul") that does not seem to have any kind of lower for it (at least one I could find). The best thing is that it does not owe me anything, and it might be useful for potential build, or maybe just as a decoration for the den wall. So what are the odds about finding a mate for it, or not. I found out later that Davidson Defense was probably not the best place to blow up a credit card. Still learning and laughing at myself.

And that is why I joined this group, did not even know that was a thing. Thank you all for pointing it out. The sad thing is that I read what little instructions came with the darn things.
