I am thinking about having a barrel custom turned and was wanting to use a .875 gas block but the only guns I have seen run the .875 gas blocks are Armalite. I am using a DPMS style bolt and was wondering if it would function properly with a Armalite style gas system on the barrel. Anybody have any answers?

I believe Armilite uses different length gas tubes ,but the Bolt carrier is basically the same as DPMS & should work .

The gas tube you use will be determaned by where your gas port is on the barrel .

What gas length set up, is up to you & if GA said mid , they know more about it than I do .

The normal gas system for a 20" bbl. is a rifle length . Now when you go to a 18" the mid length would be more in line  & as you go to a 16" the carbine gas system is the norm .

I have a 20" & a 16" & both have a rifle length gas system  & work fine .

Its up to you.

You will find that if you go with a different set up than whats normal , you may need to tweak things . Like a different Buffer or its spring ,lighter/heavier bolt Carrier group & so forth.

Hell ,some times you have to tweak it any way.

If they are building it ,than that's there responsibility to get the rifle to operate properly.

If it's an Armalite gas system that you'll run, it'll be designed on an Armalite-type barrel probably.  Armalite-type barrels will probably have Armalite barrel extensions on them.  Don't mix that type barrel extension with a DPMS bolt.  My $0.02 there.

If you can contact you're you're having build your barrel, and have them (definitely) use a DPMS barrel extension for the build, then you'd have no troubles at all running a DPMS bolt with it.

I'd send them the bolt you plan on using before they build your barrel - then can test headspace with your specific bolt before the barrel ever ships out to you.  <thumbsup>
