Do I have to use the armalite mags for my ar 10 or can I get other ones that arent so expensive? If so where is a good place to get them? The ones at midway are no good as far as I have read.

Im not aware of any alternatives but other more folks may know something. Brownells has recently started stocking Armalite's here.

Armalite switched to modified M14 magazines during the AWB and never went back.

Ya I would rather not drop 50.00 per mags thats a little expensive. Also do you know if you can use 30 Rd mags? According to the manual it says to only use up to 25 Rds.

I dont know first hand. I have read there's issues with 30 round .308 mags in any AR platform.

Are there 30 round mags available for the AR-10?

I believe so I may have only seen a couple and ya from what I have read most have problems.

Modern ArmaLite magazines are proprietary. You used to be able to buy M1A magazines cheaply, and convert them pretty easily with kits sold by ArmaLite. The "old" original waffle pattern magazines won't work in a modern ArmaLite but will work in the others; KAC, DPMS, POF, ect. If I recall, ArmaLite's motivation for running the M1A mags was their cheap availability and the fact that they got around the ten round magazine ban, by using preexisting twenty round mags.

The good news if you are a capacity junky is Allied Armament has come out with the X-25 50 rnd. Drum Magazine. The bad news is that they are STUPID expensive at the moment, and they don't work for ArmaLites...Maybe their X-14 Mag can be converted to work in the ArmaLite...

My recommendation would be the current Gen 2 AR-10 mags in the multi packs at discount rates.

My Gen 2 mags have been great, and at the sale price are pretty competitive.

ArmaLite 5 pack mags for $150 brings the individual mag price to $30 for the 5 to 20 round pack.
