barrel Install

Hi guys, okay so sooner or later when I get my uppers stuff finally shipped to me, my barrel can be secured to the upper receiver, this much I know  :o  Yeah, now I went ahead with a lot of things without seeking so much advise from y'all, for one thing I think I ordered most of my parts before I even found this particular site. So before I prepare to do what I think should be the most important step in the build I guess I might as well pop this question. Well first let me state that I have never done this before. I have read as much as I can find about it, I understand what is involved and I think that it at least seems to me to be not so complicated, I mean really. I have not yet ordered the DPMS barrel nut wrench which is required in my case, nor the DPMS 308 Panther Receiver Claw and I have my very good torque wrench anyway to do this procedure. So the question is, before I make that tools order from JSE Surplus, should I do it myself? I feel confident and have this kind of aptitude anyway, I mean I am a long time robotics technician by trade I install them and troubleshoot and all that stuff, today I just tuned up my pick up and she runs awesome again & I have always usually had a sports car I work on like my 72 240Z all tricked out that I have right now  ;D, you know? So I get it. I'm not worried about this but, seriously now, this is a very important process coming up so I wonder if there is something, anything I am amiss. I don't think there is but heck I never did it before and it IS a big deal, that's all. Any voodoo or anything that I should know about?

Youtube a few videos of it, typically there ar 15's but the process is the same. Once you see a few, and a couple of different methods they use, you'll see its not that complex a deal. I've seen a few with no torque wrench, and just lining up the gas tube holes once its fairly snug. Then there's the "do it three times" camp, where you tighten to spec, line the hole, then undo it all and repeat it two more times. So watch a few, pick one you think is good and use that. Im a fan of torquing to the lowest spec, then twisting to the next hole lines up, being sure not to exceed the max spec.

See this is what I'm talking about because now this confuses me, for now. The next hole? Must not be talking about the hole in the barrel nut extension for gas tube because there is only one hole there, or is that just in my case? Must be talking about the holes or spaces for wrench engagements? 338 yeah I'll go check out youtube that's one thing I forget to do. Thanks!!

oh yeah, pics of my barrel nut and extension (extension, is that what you call it?)

ok thank you. I went to youtube by now and yeah found stuff there but really nothing that matched up with my type of nut. I don't have the holes but the notches around nut to engage wrench with. I guess it's the same idea though. Only I have to line up a "notch" with gas tube hole, yeah?

Oh yeah!! Thanks 338  :)  yeah the JP is just like my set up, I have JD Machine's system and they work exactly the same it appears. This is the last bit I needed to know about as far as mechanics. After reading a lot though the forums I am aware of some tricks to get through it regarding potential hang ups preventing an easy procedure so I think now I have enough background from others experiences to get through it. Thanks guys I appreciate it very much  <thumbsup>
