Yep, run a mag of 8 and keep it flush with the grip whilst carrying.  Lower profile that way, less chance of printing, easier to conceal.

 

First reload needs to hold as many as you can, or as many are legal.  10 is about it for a .45 ACP single stack, unless you're looking for competition mags.  I'm pretty sure the legal capacity of any pistol in Cali is 10 rounds. I don't carry the XD when I go to Cali - I take a Kimber with 10s.
