  1. Yes and Yes. The contract is for Federal Premium AST, and it is available in 9mm, .357 Sig, .40, and .45 - as well as different bullet weights for most of those calibers. http://le.atk.com/general/federalproducts/pistol/tacticalhst.aspx Although their products are in extremely high demand right now, and you can expect to pay a premium price for them because of it. You will also have to do some searching to find out who has them in stock - and know that they sell out quickly.
  2. Nothing wrong with sharing good info - I use Frank Boyer (retired SAPD and great 2A rights supporter) for my transfers - he's the owner of Wetmore Shooting Sports located over by the SA Airport.
  3. Take care, stay safe, look out for yourself and the guys/gals with you - and come back home to some hog huntin' and barbecue!
  4. My expectations are similar, based on my experience with the M110. I still want to campare them one to one, however.
  5. I got lucky and found a complete set advertised as a private sale for $1050 or so, IIRC. I got even more lucky that it was a complete set from one rifle, and in excellent condition - this would have been a deal it would have been easy to get burned on. I let the gunsmith keep the GI barrel, and I am certain he gave me a pretty steep discount as I was deployed at the time. If I wanted to do it again (and I still have a spare receiver in my safe, so I may well do so in the near future), I would go the same route - I see that Randy at Treeline Enterprises is advertising complete kits with barrel, less receiver, starting at $1200- http://treelinem14.com/M14-Parts-Kits_c31.htm
  6. The barrel could be marked .308 or 7.62 - as has been pointed out, with new made barrels this is not a problem, as the manufacturers are aware that any barrel marked 7.62 will most likely be used at some point to shoot .308 - and so is built and proofed to take the higher pressures of the civilian specification. Where you can run into problems is when you use a surplus military parts kit or barrel to make a firearm, and then fire .308 through it - when those barrels were only made and proofed with 7.62x51 NATO in mind. This is the case with a G3 parts kit I have, and why I had a new barrel installed on my M14 parts kit when I had it built. So for the OPs question - in your case it makes no difference which one you 'choose' - as they are essentially the same thing for what you are looking at. If that makes me an 'Internet Commando' so be it - although this Internet Commando is also a graduate of the US Army Small Arms Master Gunner School.
  7. For me, it was a natural progression of my interest in US military rifles. I first shot the M-14 at the National Matches years ago, and was immediately in love. Moving onto my own attempts in Highpower competition I went with the AR platform, since that was what I was issued - and thus what I wanted to be most proficient with. Fast forward and I attended the Army Master Gunner School - where I got to learn and shoot the Knight's M110 - and again fell in love. While in Iraq I had a semi M-14 built up, and am finally getting around to completing it. At the same time, I have a strong desire to put it and the M110 style design (as I would like to have seen it fielded) head to head for a direct comparison. So here I am with a big pile of parts - just waiting for my LPK to arrive and I can assemble it.
  8. The .308 PMAGs are compatible with multiple manufacturers' rifles - http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG243/11 Compatible lowers include the US Military M110 Semiaoutomatic Sniper System (SASS), and -
  9. Retired Army medic here, 24 years in between Reserve/Active and Guard. Looking forward to this section being reopened!
  10. Considering that this rifle is still a pile of parts (1 more piece on the way, and then I can start assembly), no pics yet - but soon, my friends.
  11. Since M1A is a trademark owned by Springfield Armory Inc., that can't be used to describe any rifle not made by them. I had Jon Wolfe build up a USGI M14 parts set on a Fulton receiver, with his Wolfe Medium Modified barrel and op rod guide, with sights and trigger upgraded to NM specs. Stock is a JAE G3 with a TD ACB-4 bipod. Yeah, she can shoot.
  12. I like the idea of a tactical .22 board - but do it and this one have to look almost exactly the same?
  13. My setup is quite similar - a Fulton lower, and an upper built by Atomic Tactical with mostly DPMS parts. If it was all Fulton I could realistically call it a Titan, and if it was all DPMS I could call it a Panther - but it's not. So, "I christen thee my Atomic .308 AR!" That should get some laughs, anyway... :D - Fulton Lower - CMMG LPK - MAGPUL PRS Stock and completion Kit - Atomic tactical upper with DPMS receiver, DPMS 18" SASS barrel, AAC Blackout flash hider, Troy MRF BattleRail free float handguard, PRI gas block - DPMS BCG
  14. Um, thanks - but this is Histopicker's intro thread...
  15. Hi, all. I live in NE San Antonio and work in Seguin. I shoot at the Bracken Range pretty regularly, and I want to go check out the Bexar Community Range in Marion when I can.
  16. If we haven't already, we need to start a hog hunting thread on this site - for those (like me) who have never been out for porkers, and so some of you old vets can show off your pics and tell lies share your experiences.
  17. San Antonio based here. Recently retired (from the Guard, so no money yet) Army medic, just getting into the 7.62 game. Am building up a .308 AR to put head to head with my semi M14 for comparison purposes. I have an ever increasing pile of parts - should have everything I need to start the build this weekend. I saw the lower receiver tutorial - that should come in handy, so thanks in advance! Thanks also for some of the posts in the troubleshooting section, so I have an idea what to expect when I start my break-in period, Looking forward to participating here - if this is anything like the other boards I post to, I'll rack uo a couple of hundred posts pretty quickly!
