What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
dirigoboy replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Here's why Jett Webb did. A hunter in North Carolina says he bagged a 500-pound wild pig last month. Jett Webb, a 34-year-old from Conetoe, N.C., was hunting boar at the White Oak Ranch Hunting Club in Bertie County on Feb. 28 when he spotted the giant swine. "It was very surreal,” Webb told WNCT-TV. “It was a shock. It was very humbling to say the least, when you walk up on a beast that big and you say, 'Oh my gosh. I had no idea that there could be something that big running around the woods of Eastern North Carolina.’" The beast had been seen on trail camera footage years ago, but hunters had failed to capture it until Webb, who says he fired a single shot from a .308-caliber AR-15 rifle from about 50 yards, took it down. "The Mohawk down the back, the tusks really lean, the muscular big front end," Webb said. "This is far from a domesticated docile pig that we're used to." Wild boars typically weigh between 100 and 200 pounds. Mike Mansell, the president of the club, said while the wild boar population is invasive, the sheer size of the pig Webb nabbed is rare. “It takes your breath away for a second to realize how big this hog is,” Mansell said. “It took up the entire bed of the pickup truck." But while it's big, it's certainly not the largest boar ever bagged. In 2005, a guide at a hunting club in Alapaha, Ga., shot and killed an 800-pound hog known by locals as Hogzilla. The pursuit was the subject of a National Geographic documentary. It also wasn't Webb's first big boar. In 2012, he caught "a similar-sized" pig that's mounted on a wall of the White Oak Ranch Hunting Club. But this one won't be. "We’re not going to waste anything,” Webb said. “That pig will provide food for me and my family for a good year." -
Thanks for the response, as I wasn't sure what it meant. Hopefully others will chime in as well.

Noticed that this GII is being advertised as .308/7.62. In 2009, I opted to by my DPMS AP4 in caliber 7.62. Anyone know what this new designation means? Can you order either, or did this change somehow? Not sure I asked the question right.

Thanks, much appreciated. A hole in the heart to be sure, but life waits for no man, and indeed goes on. Here's to better days ahead.

shizz......I meant to show and tell before now, but I've had a family tragedy that we've been coping with, so I'm now just getting back. If there's a bit of light to recent dark days, it would be this lil' tool that I've been saving for, for forever it would seem. Don't mind the white fairy dust from the rubber lens covers. Hope to follow this up next year with the magnifier.

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
dirigoboy replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Picked up my Aimpoint at the Post Office just before closing today.....and like others alluded to, the extras are a really nice gesture, particularly one tool I never had given consideration to.....but that's why LaRue is so top shelf. Digging in to my box (with gusto I might add)......in a nifty little package was a LaRue 'Dillo Beverage Entry Device. And, I gotta tell ya......it was spot on. Having used it, I am happy to report it was flawless, with no failures to feed. Cripes I love this company. -

For me, it's pretty simple and not complicated at all. I prefer distance and knock down capability -

I was informed that these were to be waiting for me at the post office tomorrow. -
I hear ya. I often wonder how well the pretty people would do if we plopped them down in an area outside the wire? One of the few hunting shows I feel is okay is Eastman's. The motto is "fair chase." As for the rest.......I've given up on watching most of them, though I do like to watch the Elk hunts. Those are generally happening in open areas.

Right after school let out this past year, I made my way over to Tractor Supply, where I bought a nice Cannon, 24 gun safe. Up until that time, like lots of guys, I was hiding mine all over the house, and every day when I closed the door to leave for work, I would kinda cringe and wonder if this was going to be the day that I got hit. That gun safe has given me a lot more peace of mind, and while there is always the chance that someone could crack it, it's going to take a lot more effort, and could buy me time, which sometimes is all that's required. Most thief's don't like to hang around. Secondly, Cannon provides a booklet with their safe's, and I took the time to catalog the description and serial numbers of all my weapons, as well as photos of each from two sides, which are on my computer. It's not full proof. If an intruder is intelligent and determined, there's a good chance he can still get at your weapons, but having them locked up and recorded legally protects you, and probably increases the size of your insurance check, should they not be recovered, or damaged.

I spent a good deal of time looking at commentary and recommendations on safes, and tried to bone up on them before I bought. As I'd said at the top, Cannon wasn't my first choice, but I think for my geographic area and what I was able to afford, it's a good fit for me. And, it has limited life time on it, so I was satisfied, and I feel a lot better every day I leave the house. The ONE thing I came away very sure of, was the dial vs. the electronic key mechanism. I don't trust electronic and yeah, a dial probably take s a little longer to open....but at least I know I can open it, the rest is dependent on pilot error.

I don't want to turn this safe thread in to "show your dog" but you asked for a pic. So, here's my "GSD" tip o the spear. He's lost some weight, so he's somewhere around 100 lbs. since the on-set of Spring. He's not fond of FedEx, UPS, Utility meter trucks, nor anyone else he doesn't recognize. He'll rip you a new one if you can get out of your vehicle, which....is pretty much how I like it. Btw....I'm getting better at opening the safe (I have a dial vs. electronic). It only took me three times vs about 7 or 8 yesterday.

My essential security system is a very aggressive german shepherd, but no, I don't any alarm. I'm in a very rural area, we own a bunch of acerage and it's a dead end road-----all family and we all note who comes and goes, so it's very similar to a crime watch neighborhood. I installed a pretty expensive drain system in the cellar, and one of the items we bought was a big dehumidifier. That cellar is dryer than a popcorn fart. I am mulling over putting one of those rods in, though I don't know that I need it with the dehumidifier. Interesting phenomena regarding that light. My sense is that for right now, I may want to leave the light off for my own survival...heh, heh. However, I do have room for expansion. In preparation, and with long term planning a priority, I'm taking a Creative Whining course this Summer.

I've been saving up for awhile, and went out and bought one yesterday. We've had some break-in's in my area, and I would cringe every day I left for work. No more. I bought a Cannon 24 gun safe. It wasn't my first choice, but it was within my price range. I bought it at Tractor Supply. I would have preferred the Winchester's they just got in, but.....I'm happy, I can feel a bit more secure. They won't be lugging it out of my cellar anyway.

DPMS Receiver Heights

Thanks for providing the illustration. Actually, we all know the statement about what a picture paints, and secondly, others were hoping for the same thing.....they just were afraid to ask. Like I care. Thanks again. -

DPMS Receiver Heights
dirigoboy replied to imschur's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Cripes....something else to struggle with. I bought my DPMS 7.62 ap4 a couple years ago off Gunbroker. Recently, I have been looking at the hand guards and sights from Sampson Mfg., but unfortunately, they say that on my model, it won't match up. So then, I read this on Sniper's Hide: "Samson Mfg has a new freefloat handguard out called the Evolution. Samson is making a version specific to the new DPMS .308 flattop upper rail height, and should have these ready to ship by SHOT 2011. They are also making a version for the AR10-height uppers like the older DPMS flattops, the AR10 flattops, the Mega MA-TEN, etc. So, Samson will be making the Evolution in three different versions: AR15, DPMS .308 low, and AR10." My freakin' head is beginning to hurt. I really am not sure what height my Picatinny rail is and the description of how to measure it to find out is confusing to me.....I thought I'd be a big boy and admit that. So, before my pisstivity level rises anymore, could someone to a photo series on the appropriate method of measuring?....or is it possible even to know what height I've got based on the serial number of my rifle? -

Anyone here from Arizona? I'm liking your state more and more everyday. First for it's Governor and her stance on Immigration, and now this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqnjzONrPiA&feature=player_embedded

Yeah, I like you too. We just got in a load of McGuffy readers in by stagecoach here in the northeast outpost.
