I didn't even look at Armalite, because I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the gas hole placement was a different length from the beginning of the gas journal. I take it that was in correct and the gas systems are interchangeable between the two platforms?
-
Yea, I actually ended up going with the Fulton Armory clamp on. At first I was going to use the JD block, but that SI Defense barrel I started with had a gas journal that was a little too big. Ended up changing the barrel anyway, but I had already ordered the FA block. It's really nice and solid, so no worries there.

Let me know if you still need any write-ups. I'll knock a couple out for you as soon as I get some free time. Just give me a topic, if I don't already know it (which I probably won't), I'll do some research and get it back to you.

Welcome! I've learned a ton here. Whet in SoCal are you at?

Another option to look at would be the Larue rail index clips, http://www.laruetactical.com/indexclips-72-piece-set I ordered a set of these to paint pink (I know!) for the OL. I had originally thought about going a similar route as you're talking about. But, if she decides she wants a different for end or something, I'd be stuck trying to sell a pink $300 rail. Anyway, the come in lots of colors, to include dark earth. Just a thought.

Anybody used this stuff. CTD has it for 12.79 a box right now $.64 a round is kind of hard to look away from. Looks like bulk prices in box packaging. I'm not looking for great precision with this, more just for a good plinker that's not going to destroy the new rifle. I have heard that Federal/AE brass is the same as Lake City, thick. Also, CTD has some Federal Gold Match 168g BTHP for 19.66, one of the better prices I've seen. Although I'm no expert.
-
Pretty interesting read. Makes me think about all my 556 sitting in the safe. Fortunately, it's mostly Lake City brass, with some Winchester white box. Although, I have heard some scary rumors about Winchesters white box stuff being poor quality.
-
MaDuce, I've had a 5.56 with a with a JD lower, and have been pleased. I'll let everyone know how this .308 works out. The shop is really cool, especially when it comes to customer service.
-
Which tube did you go with?
-
prison_planet, I've been doing the build myself, along with a 6.8, and a 5.56 for the OL.

JGun- I agree, each issue in itself is not a big deal. However, I'm not too inclined to see if there is a third, especially if it shows up on the inside of the barrel. This was not a match barrel, and it was only $50 more to order the FA, plus they will match the bolt for me. Oh, and no, the vortex wouldn't even bite the first thread. imschur- I may just stay away from Midway when it comes to precision components from now on. I'll still catch their deals on bullets and other "not so sensitive" components. I'd be scared to order any glass through them.

Yea, I can't wait to actually fire with this SSA. Just having the lower built, I agree with you, that I would like to swap all my triggers out with them. Wish the Marine Corps would swap all of their rifles out with them.
-
I thought about going that route as well. I was leaning more towards the other since I already have an air brush/ compressor, and would only have the cost of materials. I definitley do not feel like shelling out $70+shipping for a finish that I can just as easily do in my garage.
-
That's what I thought too. I didn't find many reviews on their barrels, but everything else I saw about them looked pretty legit. I did read somewhere that they use different machine shops for their barrels. It also could have been on Midways end, the barrel didn't arrive with any protection other than some oil on it, not even plastic thread caps.
-
Just an update on this barrel. I will be returning it! First the gas block journal was .001 too big, no big deal, I just got a clamp on gas block instead of th one I was going to use. Next, the threads wouldn't accept a 5/8x24 threaded vortex flash suppressor. I don't feel like waiting to find out if there is a third discrepancy. Nothing against SI Defense or MidwayUSA, as this could have easily been out of a bad batch or something along those lines. I just don't feel like reworking a product that is supposed to be a drop in. Now I have a FA bolt/barrel combo in the mail. Just need to figure out how I'm going to black it out.

Anybody know whether or not I can have a black oxide finish applyied to a stainless steel barrel? I know they can't be blued, but I'm not sure if it's the same thing. I recieved a 5.56 stainless barrel from Rainier Arms with their black oxide finish. I asked if they could do it to my .308, but they said they would have to apply gunkote. If it can't be done, what color duracoat, ceracote, or guncote, would match this the closest? Which product do you prefer. I've used Duracoat, but not on any high temp locations.

Anybody have any input on how well the SI Defense barrels stack up against the other brands like FA or Krieger? I've got a SI Defense SASS barrel on hand, but before I put it on I'd like to see if there's anything I'm missing out on by not ordering the same profile from Fulton Armory.

Any body know of a good railed .875 gas block, preferably a clamp style? My barrels gas block journal measures at .876 and rather not have to turn down the barrel, just in case I have to return it. Another option for me would be if anyone knows of any ready to ship 20" medium contour barrels similar to the m110 profile. Mine came from SI Defense.
-
Parts are starting to come in, with more on the way, and more to order. I started out wanting to build a m110 clone (rather a mk11 mod 2, since I'm a Marine.) So far I've ended up changing everything except the barrel profile. However I am still trying to stay in the medium weight GP type arena. So far I have: * JD Machine matched upper and lower (looks and feels awesome) - JD * DPMS LPK, as well as the .308 compatible pieces - MidwayUSA/JD * Ejection Port cover and HW - JD * Fwd Assist and HW - JD * Geissele SSA trigger - Brownells * LR-308 rifle buffer/tube/spring- Midway * Magpul PRS .308 - Midway * DPMS phosphate BCG - Rainier Arms * SI Defense 20" M110 SASS contour barrel - Midway * DPMS rifle gas tube and roll pin I still need: * Rail system - looking at DD Lite or Samson STAR10 (if it will fit) any other suggestions that will mount flush with the JD upper * 0.875 gas block, will depend on the RAS I end up with. Although, I would love to get my hands on one similar to the M110, if anyone can think of one. I don't need the suppressor slotting though, since CA will probably never allow me to attach one >:( * Muzzle device - Leaning towards the Smith Enterprise Vortex, any thoughts? * Bi-pod/ adapter * Scope/rings * BUIS (not a huge priority right now) * Lots of bullets!!! I will probably start reloading due to this build and the 6.8 I'm also doing. Taking a chance on the Si Defense barrel because I couldn't find too many reviews on it. However everyone seems to love their other products so I figure I would be a ginny pig and try it out. Please let me know if anyone has had a bad experience with their barrels and hopefully I wont have installed it yet. I would have preferred to get a matched bolt/barrel but the price on this thing was too good to pass up ($205 w/coupon) before shipping for a $300 barrel. I am open to any suggestions you guys may have. I will say that I have already learned a lot just from scrolling through as many posts as I can. The guys down at JD Machine have been extremely helpful. Plus they have a sweet set up down there. I would definitely suggest checking the place out if you live in the San Diego area. Oh, and I will not forget to post pictures as it comes together!

Not sure if you're still looking for this info, but I google .308 AR build.
-
Hello everyone! Another noob to the .308, but not the AR. I'be been lurking for the past couple days (please forgive), while I wait for my "cool off period" to expire and I can head back down to JD Machine and pick up the matched set i ordered. Trying to get as much info as possible before I start pouring money into this build. This is an awesome site, already learned A TON!
