Sadly, that is how the majority of society sees anyone who has any sort of military service, as weapons experts trained in the sciences of stopping human heartbeats. Students completing our CCW course (ours, not what AZ "requires") shoot better, have more firearms knowledge, and better skills, that the average POST certified cop trained on one handgun type.
"Trained", serious or not. But I understand what you are saying. I've seen it said multiple times in comments on articles by people trying to make a point about "assault weapons", that they could create more carnage with a revolver and a shotgun. And a person who had been properly trained could.
Any one of the people who now do the realistic "competitions" would be a handful to overcome for any non-urban SWAT-light/lacking police force. Just as when N. Korea sends in those sapper crews to S. Korea to test defenses and raise havoc, the adversary would need to be overcome by dogged persistence.
