Another happy lee factory crimp die user here. I never had problems with bullets moving (that I noticed) but I no longer need to uniform my case length. As long as the case length is in spec the crimp die does the rest and you get uniform neck tension and a sturdy round for for the violent action of the 308. I also use a small base die because the loaded round/chamber tolerances are greater therefor giving you greater reliability. I have tried regular dies with no difference in accuracy.

I used to mess around with seating depth and bullet jump now I just load my pet load to mag length, shut the gas off, shoot single shot with -1/2moa results. Also when you do this, you can neck size only. I grew up shooting bolt rifles and this is how you turn your semi into a sweet a$$ straight pull bolt. I think it's just a matter of finding a good load that is accurate with that big jump rather than loading a round that takes away from the capability of the rifle.

That's funny, the wife and I used to live on Fernwood a few years ago. I'm gone from may till the first week in September commercial fishing, but after that I go heavy on the kings. Good to hear that you didn't get skunked on the derby. I went out last year for the derby and it was the only day we got skunked the whole year! Btw, was that a white king? Those are the best eating fish out there ( my opinion). Good luck this summer! On a side note, if you find yourself at sportsman's or the other gun shops and ammo and reloading supplies start becoming available again, slap a post up if you would. I was up there a couple weeks ago and there was NOTHING for 308 or 223, so if you let me know I might be obligated to share a couple good trolling spots... Hope you are well and happy fishing and shooting!

Hey Swissy, if you're here for the kings in the late season look me up always looking for new people to fish and shoot with.

Do what I did, shoot 10 rds through a 300 win mag off the bench and then pick up your lr, it'll feel like a 22! -
DPMS308 FEEDING PROBLEMS
Skiffjockey replied to charlie52usaf's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
When my dpms was new it ran fine with ggg 147 gr for the first 20 or 30 rounds then I started having the same issue. The rifle was kept clean and I followed the break in instructions from the manual. After about 100 rounds one of the feed lips broke on the factory mag and I switched to a c products stainless mag which has worked great for 5 years of regular shooting. As far as the chamber roughness issue I polished mine with a chamber mop with a fine dry polishing compound. Used a cordless drill on it and has shot 1/2 moa ever since and no more feeding issues. The only other problem I had was a couple start loads wouldn't cycle but that was fixed with an adjustable gas block. Oh, and pmags seem to make the rifle cycle smoother than with metal mags. -
My wife and I were discussing building her a 223 ar and she asked me if she could use it for moose hunting and when I told her no, she said she wanted a 308. She also said she doesn't want a cheap one. So, my goal is the lightest carbine 308 I can build. My first question for all you gurus is which receiver set (that uses pmags) to start with and who makes a decent barrel. Also, has anyone played around with spiral fluting and if so who did it?

I had a similar issue with my lgs when I bought my lr 308. I had a friend pick the rifle up for me on the first election of our great destroyer of liberty. Upon receiving the rifle I was immediately struck with black rifle disease. I went to the lgs to shoot the breeze and to see what I could find out about my purchase. All he told me was to get rid of it because it wasn't an m1a and anything that didn't say Springfield on it was junk. Thing was, I already owned an m1a scout model and I could already see the that the dpms was superior in simplicity and all around use. After shooting it with surplus ammo I could see that it was also more accurate. In the 3-4000 rds fired since then I have had NOT ONE malfunction and no loss in accuracy (1/2 moa with handloads). Another point brought up in this post is that dpms are not "battle proven". Well, the only weapons that are battle proven are being employed by troops in a theatre of war. You could buy the LMT but your rifle will never see "battle" (at least I hope not for your sake) so it won't be battle proven either. Remember, these are built by humans so no matter what brand you buy you could always get a lemon. I personally have taken my lr with me every fishing season since I bought it and have put it through conditions that no fine rifle should be put through (70 mph wind storms in sand dunes on the Bering sea coast, dropped in salt water, forgetting to oil the rifle once a week etc) and never had a problem. Heck I even shot it full of sand to scare a brown bear away from some walrus tusks! To each their own but the best opinions to listen to are your own. I now have over 3000$ invested in my dpms and would put it up against any higher priced equivalent. Good luck and happy shooting!

here's a couple pics. I heard that changing muzzle devices can sometimes change POI or screw with accuracy. NOT the case here.
-
I'll try to post a pic but I got that brake from brownells. I have the 20" dpms barrel and the brake looks kind of dorky but it works!
-
I grew up shooting bolt rifles and never thought the lr had any recoil to speak of until I started shooting rapid fire at 100 from a bipod and I couldn't believe how much muzzle jump it had. I just received and installed my new Precision Armament m-41 brake and jp adjustable gas block and now I can watch the rounds hit the target through the scope. It literally cut my shot times in half.

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
Skiffjockey replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
After a scout model m1a and not being very happy with accuracy and scope mounting options I bought a dpms 20" lr and all types woes were GONE! I bought it four years ago in November and I finally finished it last week after finding this site and being convinced of all the cool parts it needed. Awesome website!
