  1. Thanks for the insight. I never really see all these pressure signs in any of my guns. Cratering, Flattening of primers, ejector smear, but I keep reading it is normal for LR308 and want to confirm that this is the case. The cases were not bulged at all either. Hodgdon online lists 155 GR. SIE HPBT Hodgdon Varget .308" 2.775" 44.0 2759 41,300 CUP 47.0C 2909 49,400 CUP I was just reading about several other people having this problem with Winchester primers. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=623587 This guys primer ruptured at the same point. My Friend had one (WLR Primer) do the same thing in his starting loads on his 1903A3 bolt, and it pitted it in the same way as my JP bolt. I have a Chronograph but I haven't figured out an easy way to set it up at the range. The damage looks minor, but is there anything I should be worried about to warrant buying another JP bolt? I guess I didn't notice the Gases being blown back which I think is strange too. Yes the build is new, this was my first time out since I fixed the bolt stop issues.
  2. My 3rd trip out with this rifle, finally got past all the bolt catch issues and got a replacement adjustable gas block. Even my starting loads show high pressure signs. I have read that primer cratering and flattened primers and ejector smear are normal for LR308's. But I just can't get over that. My rifle has a rainier arms ultra match barrel and its very accurate but it must have a tight chamber or something? pressure signs by Glamisduner, on Flickr The loads with the mil brass were not starting loads, I used hard tula primers. This piece was probably from one my my hotter loads 43 grains varget behind a 175 SMK. The ruptured gold colored winchester primer however was just a hair above the starting load recommended for 155's. It uses 155 grain Palma SMK, behind 44.5gr varget. This found burned a small hole in my brand new JP bolt. (I say new but it has about 100 rounds or so shot out of it_. bolt damage by Glamisduner, on Flickr You can see the pit right next to the ejector. Not sure what I could be doing wrong here, or maybe its a defective primer because my friend had the same thing happen with winchesters we bought around the same time on his 1903a3 with a light load as well.
  3. Just to clarify do not let it fly when headspacing, the upper should be separated from the rifle and and you should be trying to close the go/nogo gauges by pressing on the back of the BCG.
  4. I had to send my wilson .937 adjustable gasblock back due to the adjustment screw not being threaded fully. I only had 1.5 turns of adjustment. Now they are backordered with no ETA for a replacement. So I'm thinking to get the JP gasblock now. Anyone have this combo on a rifle length gas system? Does it use a double setscrew design or is locktight required? Also can you access the adjustment though the grove in the JP VTAC handguard? Considering asking Wilson for a refund since there is no ETA for a replacement part. JP is one of the only other blocks that might work.
  5. Well took it over to a friends and we machined the CMMG bolt catch to work perfectly, it was catching a bit on the bolt. Now I just need to get my gas block back and I can take her back out. Unfortunately it is back ordered now so my RMA is just sitting at Wilson combat until they make more. Ugg could be months weeks years who knows....Still stuck at 99%!
  6. Hmm note how the comments are disabled? Looks like the anti 2A team also does not promote 1A lol. Could it be that they disabled them because it is full of lies? Oh wait good job on them for using someone else's video, who now calls them out in it haha. The media is terrible. Your right most people don't realize that assault weapons are already illegal here, and that even without a BB, the weapon would not be considered an assault weapon in free america, it's just some BS term the politicians made up... There is a lot of ignorance here, many don't understand the difference between semi automatic and automatic. It's not as bad down south were we have all the Military and Navy bases, but we are forced to play by the same rules as SF :( Even people I work with think there is no reason you would ever need more than 6 rounds. And their right, you won't ever need more than 6 rounds... that is until you do. Good thing that bill got dropped. Same reasoning was used for gun free zones. Gun free zones are great because no one has a gun in them, so you won't need one either... Until they do! With what just happened in Santa Monica I expect all upcoming bills to pass too. Looks like it is my last opportunity to get those C&R's I want or any other rifles before next year. Then I'll be done until I escape the state some day. Oh yea, in one video that was on TV they even said that a bullet button converts a semi automatic into a fully automatic, and it was written elsewhere that the bullet button increases the rate of fire and allows the use of high capacity magazines. ::) Makes it more frustrating when people don't even believe you when you explain it to them because they heard it on the news. ONce I was watching TV I think it was Fox and the reporter showed a 223 bullet and they were like "Look at the size of this thing" (Camera zoomed way in), and they explained that these huge bullets were the ones being used in the shootings and that we need to do something about it. Yea cause 223 is massive! "SB 249 prohibits the manufacture, transfer, or possession of conversion kits but does not address the growing problem of factory-installed bullet buttons." Possession covers it all, even factory installed ??? Guess I'll have to start getting some BB repair kits too.
  7. I hear you on buying up lowers, I would be doing the same except that once they are registered as assault weapons I would not be able to sell or transfer them to anyone here once the new laws pass, not even my future kids. So the government just gets them when i die and I don't want that.
  8. I got my Sierra Precision grip in and boy is it plain and ugly. The fit looks terrible and awkward. But damn does it fit my hand perfectly! Puts the end of my pointer finger pad perfectly on the trigger every time I grab it. It's made from hard cast, lightly textured plastic. No storage in the bottom either. It is very functional though very ugly. I don't know what to do now. It is ugly, but after holding it all my other Ar grips feel like tiny and way too small. I mean I still like my BCM with the modified grip angle for my more tactical AR, but for the 308 beast or even my longer range 223 my other grips just are not at the same level. I think I like my old original style ergo the least, the hogue is ok but still on the small side. The BCM is grippy, but too narrow, and this new one is ugly as sin but I can't help but like it. It isn't perfect, if it had storage and a taller back-strap it would be a little better, although it kind of positions your hand away from that area anyways. I might send it back though since apparently brownells sent me a used grip. There is a chip in the corner, probably from someone who tried to install with an ambidextrous safety. Sierra Precision by Glamisduner, on Flickr Sierra Precision by Glamisduner, on Flickr Untitled by Glamisduner, on Flickr Yes the fit looks terrible and the grip itself looks bulky. IMO it is super UGLY. It's not flush with the receiver, and the ergonomics don't match the receiver but i'll be damned if they don't fit the hand. It is very comfortable and positions your trigger finger and thumb perfectly every time!
  9. Nice review, I think he had to old Razor HD though, the new ones have upgraded optics, supposedly an edge over the SS. I also don't know which reticle he was using on the Razor HD either, does not sound like he was using the EBR-2B which is the reticle I would choose for the Razor over the diamonds on the SS. Then again I think the Bushnell G2DMR reticle is better than both of them which high up there on my reasons list is why I went with it. It also depends if you want to be able to do hold overs or not, I love that ability which would be nearly impossible to do wit the SS reticle. If you want to always dial the knobs though it's not required. I would prefer 5 mil knobs over the 10 if there is a zero stop, but that's all preference. The scope I bought has 10 mil knobs which some consider an upgrade, but not me. Another thing to consider is if you want Moa/Moa or Mil/Mil. I was interested in trying the moa/moa on the Razor HD, which Bushnell and SS do not offer. I also read the illumination is better on the Razor HD over the SS, but haven't compared them myself as I have no need for illumination for what I use it for. Finally I think Vortex has the best warranty out of the above. It all comes down to the features you want the most, apparently the tracking is pretty solid on all of them, although I haven't seen any drop tests, or 3rd party tests like I have with the Bushnell. Most importantly the Bushnell 6-24 model you were looking in the OP at is NOT as good as the other 2 scopes for sure. Comparable would be the XRS, or if wanting something cheaper the G2HDMR (Neither of which have illumination). The XRS does not have illumination but comes in cheaper then the Razor HD and has 30x magnification. Expect mirage @30x on a hot day though. If you need illumination you can cross Bushnell off the list. The 3.5-21mm with 34mm tube does not have illumination. The SS is supposed to be a great scope for the money, but most of the people saying that were able to take advantage of the HUGE sale that you missed where you get 2 scopes for only a little more than they are now charging for one. I'd suggest youtubing a video that demonstrates using the G2DMR reticle on the Bushnell, the Razor would work the same way only you have dots instead of lines. One more thing, make sure knobs have enough adjustment for the distance you want to shoot. The Razor HD I think has the most? On the SS it might be more important since you don't have wind-age hold overs, but it might have enough for ya. Again I'm not saying not to get the SS, get what you want!
  10. SWFA is up there with the rest, the only thing holding it back IMO is the reticle. I don't like it.
  11. The carbon fiber wrap only allows them to be lighter, you can achieve stiffness by making the barrel heavier without CF as well. Most wait times are over a year right now from custom barrel makers. That's the reason I ended up going another route, can always change the barrel out later heh. So...You should have plenty of time to pick a trigger. I hear the Wilson combat triggers are nice but have never tried one, and of course the Geissele HS and SR-Gold as well.
  12. Solid BCG? Like a non semi auto version of the AR? It works you will like it. They recommend not putting in the buffer retainer detent I think this will reduce slap on the spring and make cleaning easier, however I can't count the number of times it has almost fallen out of my lower when I open the action. Tempted to put the buffer retainer back in but not sure yet. I was thinking about putting on in my other AR's but decided to hold off for now until I can put more rounds through the 308. The normal buffers work fine too though. :)
  13. Thanks for your help, I ended up going with this one http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/stock-forend-parts/grips/pistol-grips/ar-15-m16-spr-pistol-grip-prod14294.aspx If it sucks I'll end up picking up the tatical delux 308 version. I guess I could remove the spacer if it is not needed. The Original ergo I have fits my JD receiver fine, I guess the spacer would eliminate the slight give in the extended backstrap portion but its not too noticeable with the girp on there now. I wonder if the one I picked up is the same thing as this one? http://www.midwayusa.com/product/638284/dpms-spr-pistol-grip-ar-15-lr-308-polymer-black. My LR 308 is more of a precision rifle than a battle rifle with it's heavy PRS stock and 24" heavy barrel, and will probably mostly be shot from the bench. I think the grip is kinda ugly, but interesting in design. I also picked up some spare firing pins, some cold blue, and some reloading stuff, and even the strange looking magpul stock for my 870, just because :)
  14. Looks different than the one on brownells? http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/stock-forend-parts/grips/pistol-grips/ar-15-m16-tactical-deluxe-grip-prod54344.aspx MIAD looks nice, but I can't figure out what is SOOOO nice about it over others. I had just about made up my mind to try the Sierra, since this is more of a precision rifle, but I don't know if it will properly hold the rear takedown detent? I guess I could always find a set screw for the detent instead if required though? What is the advantage of the palm shelf? Also what is the difference between the AR15 and 308 version? I can't figure it out but the place I want to order from only have the AR-15 version. I'm still leaning to try the Sierra. It certainly isn't a looker though. Worse case I cold replace the hogue on my Longer Rage 223 with it, I like the hoge well enough but wish the palm swell was larger and I don't care for finger groves, although really the groves on the hogue fit me pretty well , I wear a large / xl glove depending on the glove.
  15. Yea I agree, bust out the dremel. I think I will wait to see what JD and CMMG say first though. I'm almost 100% that it will work on the CMMG, since the rifle still cycles now even though it catches a little. Removing just a tiny bit more material and it should be gtg. Not sure how much it would weaken the bolt catch though. Otherwise I would definitely have to grind the upper to fix it at which point I'll be kinda pissed since its was $600 for the matched set.
  16. Ok so I just can't solve the bolt catch issues. Not sure who to point the finger at next? I installed the CMMG bolt catch and took it out. The problem is that sometimes the bolt will bind up on the catch. I took the upper off to see what was going on. BoltCatchProblem1 by Glamisduner, on Flickr So you can see the bolt catch seems to have some interference with the upper. It's not able to be pushed flat against the upper so the bolt binds a little. The gun still cycled for the most part but if I pull the bolt back with the charging handle sometimes it will get stuck on the catch, then slam forward. Once or twice the bolt locked back before the magazine was empty. So then I thought I would try the Armalite Bolt catch, but that failed too, I guess it's a hair thicker, this catch gets stuck open or closed due to the increased thickness of the catch. It mostly fits, but seems to get pinched in the lower where the spring and detent are. It's not going to work unless I sand it down at a minimum. Heres a picture that explains the bolt catches and there issues. Bolt-Catches by Glamisduner, on Flickr So, I can grind out that curve in the CMMG bolt catch and I think it would solve the problem, the gun still cycles even though the bolt catch is binding up a little so it probably wouldn't take much. The armalite would require at least some sanding because it is too thick for my lower. Or should I contact JD Machine and see if they can modify my upper and lower to work with a bolt catch?
  17. Exactly, a magazine with the floor plate removed basically. Then I can assemble a the parts into a legal blocked magazine a 10/20. Although they are trying to ban 10/20 conversions here now too for some reason, I think it is because they look to scary or something, who knows but legal for now.
  18. I have Hogue, Ergo Original, and the BCM grip. I like the BCM and the improved grip angle on my battle style rifle and would imagine it is similar to the MAID? The Ergo Tactical is much fatter though, and a lot of people like the Sierra. They say it puts your trigger finger in the same place every time and the tip of your finger will be on the trigger, rather than the second part of your joint. It certainly isn't a looker though IMO.
  19. I almost had Hart do a custom barrel for me, but went with the rainier arms ultra-match in 24", they are cut from Shilen barrel blanks. I don't like the bead blasted finish, it scrapes and scratches extremely easy, but it is more accurate than I am. I would not want to carry around this rifle though, it's really heavy. My first choice was Satern for a custom barrel but they said it would be well over a year to wait.
  20. This will be going on my long range AR with 24" heavy barrel, I have found every grip kinda small so far. Right now I have the original ergo and its way too small and I do not like it. This rifle will mostly be shot from a bench. I like my new BCM grip on my more tactical AR, but I don't think the improved grip angle will matter much when shooting long range. I'd rather have a nice fat large grip that puts my finger where it is supposed to be. I know grips are kind of a personal thing, but I'm hoping maybe that someone has tried both and can provice some good feedback. it would be nice to have a storage area to keep my BB tool / wrench but not required. edit: if a mod could fix the typo in the title (since I can't), that would be great, thx.
  21. Damn, does not look like they will ship to CA as a parts kit :(
  22. I did that last time, didn't seem to help as much as I was hoping.
  23. When I took it out the last time I was having trouble with the adjustable gas block still. Wilson Combat suggested that with the screw turned all the way in, the gas system should be shut off, and at 4 turns the other way it should be completely open. Mine only turns a total f 1.3 turns in either direction before stopping. With the gas block turned in all the way the rifle still cycles and locks back on the last shot. Since I have the JP lightweight BCG and SCS I'm a bit concerned about excessive pressures hitting the BCG, I am also getting ejector smear on my brass. I think I'm going to pull the brake, remove the float tube and gas block, and ship the block back to Wilson Combat. Then all the bugs should be worked out, although quite frankly for the supposed quality of all the parts I'm surprised I ran into so many problems. Anyone have any tips on removing the brake? If you look closely you can see some marks on it from where I stuck a drill bit through the ports and turned. The top is obviously not completely flat as well. Will I need to add or replace the shims when re-installing it?
  24. Good info, but for some reason all my long barrels are always more accurate :P probably has to do with them still being more rigid than my short barrels and getting some higher velocities.
  25. I shot my 155 SMK Palmas out to 900 yards, I don't know if they were subsonic though but I was hitting the plate.
