  1. They cause massive crop damage. They have torn up about 20 acres of wheat on the place I hunt. They have rooted so deep that I don't know if the landowner will be able to run a combine over it. It is amazing the damage they cause.
  2. Thanks for the information. The LaRue looks nice but it is a little pricey for what it is.
  3. Anyone know if the Magpul Cheek Riser attachment for the CTR stock will interfere with the charging handle?
  4. Post some pics. I want to see what it looks like.
  5. Got an Apex accessory rail and bipod mount coming. Shipped today.
  6. Just made sure it was clean. Wiped it down with alcohol. A few trips to the range and lease and I will know how well it is going to wear.
  7. Ok. Bought the Aluma=Hyde II (Coyote color) from Brownells for the hand guard and compensator. Painted it this weekend. I think it looks great.
  8. Man, where were you two weeks ago when I ordered mine. That's a great deal.
  9. Used Hornady 165 grn hollow points at about 70 yds. Not an instant kill but dropped it in it's tracks. I am starting to work on a load with 180 grn Nosler E-Tip and IMR4895. Hoping it will be a real hog stopper.
  10. What kind of scenery are you looking for? Trees? Water? Wild game?
  11. I am on a lead free kick. Thought I would load some of these in .308 for pigs. Has anyone else tried them? Anyone have a good load for them?
  12. Yea, the flavor is no where near domestic pork. I don't even mess with a boar unless it is a small one. Sows are better but still taste different. Nobody in my family but me want to eat them. Robocop is right, make sausage and add fat. I shoot them more for eradication than meat. They tear the heck out of the wheat fields on my lease. I think they have destroyed at least 8-10 acres of wheat so far this year.
  13. Don't want to hijack the thread but wanted to say thanks for all of the praise.

    First Pig

This is what I built this AR for. Took it out this weekend for the first time and and shot a big sow. I'm guessing she was about 200 lbs. Had to drag her off with a 4 wheeler.
  15. I just put an APEX 15" on my build. I really like it. Right now, they have a 14" on clearance for $197 on their website. For $60 bucks less than the 15", it is worth consideration.
  16. Robocop, that may be true for most of the world, but I hunt in West Texas and the only things there that are OD are cactus and cedar trees. Everything else is closer to FDE. Finally got to the range today. After getting the gas block adjusted, this thing shoots sweet. Can't wait to get a pig in the sights.
  17. Definitely planning on continuing with the FDE theme. Thinking I will do the the APEX and the compensator. Took it to the gunsmith today to check the headspace and it passed. Next stop is the range. Can't wait to try it out.
  18. Ok, since the Magpul MOE would not fit (couldn't get any pics that really showed the problem). I went with Plan B. An APEX 15" Free Float Handguard. I think it turned out great. I'm thinking that I will have to paint or Cerokote the handguard FDE to match the stock and the grip. Here's the final list of parts Stripped Lower - Shadow Ops Weaponry Lower Parts Kit - CMMG Butt Stock - Magpul CTR Buffer - JP Enterprises Silent Captured Spring Grip - ERGO Upper Receiver - DPMS BCG - CMMG Barrel - Mega 18" 1:10 Gas Block - JP Enterprises Adjustable Free Float Tube - APEX 2360 Compensator - Miculek <thumbsup> Thanks to everyone who helped on this thread and all the others that I read but didn't post.
  19. Final torque on the barrel nut is somewhere between 60 and 70. Thanks for the input.
  20. Here's an update, after 3 hours of tweaking and fitting, i still couldn't get it to fit. Found out today from Rainier Arms that it won't fit at all. Trying to figure our plan B. Any ideas on a lightweight handguard that I can use with my railed JP gas block and get in DFE or tan?
  21. I don't know how they compare cost wise but JP Enterprises is an option.
  22. Thanks for the ideas. I looked at moving the gas block but there is no play in it. A couple of thousandths, and it will be misaligned. I guess I am going to have to take a dremel to it and see if I can make it fit. The mid-length gas tube fit just fine so it surprises me that the handguard is that far off. I'll get started on it tonight.
  23. OK, so I am building my first AR and I chose to build it in .308. I want something with more punch for Texas hogs. I have the lower built, the barrel and gas block are on the upper. This is a mid-length gas system. I go to install the Magpul MOE handguard and it is 1/4" too long. I followed the instructions for tightening the barrel nut. Torqued to 30 ftlbs. and backed it off 3 times before I tightened it up and lined up the gas tube. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what is off by that much. Here is the list of parts on the upper: DPMS Complete upper receiver CMMG bolt carrier group JP railed adjustable gas block and gas tube Mega Arms 18" .308 barrel mid-length gas (purchased from Rainier Arms) Barrel nut and Delta Ring Assembly (purchased from Rainier Arms) Triangular end cap (fits the Magpul MOE when not on the rifle) Magpul MOE mid-length handguard Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  24. Howdy to all the members of the forum. I've been lurking around the sight for awhile now and finally decided to join. Started my first 308 build and it is almost complete. Can't wait to shoot it. Looking forward to tapping into all the experience on the site and offering any that I gain along the way.
