Good afternoon all, I installed typical iron/peep sights on my 308. The one time I had access to a range, the front post was too short to zero the rifle at 25 yards. I now have a center point laser bore sighter by Simmons and I have 40 feet inside my house. To get reasonably close, where would I put my aim point on the supplied DPMS target? Here is the one time I was able to get to the range? love the gun!!! Reloading 308 for it. thank you, bill

Finanlly got to shoot it!

thanks for the info. i was very careful to just polish to a glass finish without changing any angles. that would have ruined a new setup and not what i want to do. it didn't take long so the defects weren't very deep.....just enough to make it catch on the pull. i did the same thing to all my duty weapons in LE and my Python was probably the best out of all of them......what a smooth baby!!!! i cant wait to get back and go to the 50 yard line for the next round!! had to go get new hearing protectors. our old ones just didn't cut it. -

while shooting i noticed there were three catches during the trigger pull. when i cleaned it i found the two surfaces had etched or scribed lines across them. i got a piece of marble and 4/0 paper out and made them smooth and polished. what a difference it made!!!!! not only smoother but i bet it took a pound or more off the pull!! -

thanks guys, its been years since i actually went out to target parctice. had 14 years in Law Enforcement and a perfect score on every qualification......but i'm rusty and when i started i had the caffene jiters for a little bit. my wife shot her 6 inch 357, and her LCR for the first time and i put a few rounds through each. cant wait to go with a little less coffee and try the 50 yard. thanks agani and you are very right. trigger time----grinning time!!!! -
finanlly got out to the range today for a few test fires and to see where the new sights are striking. the first 25 rounds were at 25 yards as i had no idea where it was going to go. at this distance my lovely bride and the RO were able to help me see the target. it needs a little windage and i'm going to shoot at 50 and 100 next to see how the elevation works. stopped by our new bass pro shops and got a case for it....... thanks, bill

thank you to all. i didn't get to sight it yet but that's coming shortly. i will post some targets as soon as i get it adjusted to hit one!! i got my three magpul mags in and they are A-1 quailty....fit and lock perfectly!! i just picked up some Win +P 38's for my wifes LCR today. tomorrow i'll get another couple of boxes of 308 and one more 38. <thumbsup>

now that's a real american hot rod.........right after anything with a two valve real Hemi in it!!!

i carry always. I'm a former LEO and i know without a doubt the police are just a little too far away to help you. i carry because the criminals are always armed...... i carry because you should never bring a knife to a gun fight........ i hope when my S&W 59 gets worn, i can still get parts for it because it fits me..... i target practice for the reason i may need close support from my body to survive....... thanks, bill

LR308 Trigger question
brick13 replied to str8shuutr45's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
since i've never heard of a two stage trigger, my guess is my early match training and shooting was with a single stage trigger which i learned to gently squeeze until the rifle or pistol went bang....the two stage would probably cause my old brain cell to shut down?? thanks, bill -
survival should drive your training, thoughts and actions............i always kept survival at the front of my thoughts as i had a family and wanted to come home each day to hug them.......

coming from uniformed street duty, i know the police are just a little bit of time too far away for help. knowing that, we dont have any children at home and the grandlittles are watched by us carefully as my wife and i both know the devastation of a child handling a loaded weapon. (A fellow LEO lost his two year son that way a long time ago). i keep my S&W with one in the chamber and the safety on by the bed. the shotgun is a long barrel and it stays loaded with "00" but not one in the chamber. my wifes LCR is by her side and loaded.........the ADT alarm is set and we get a good nights sleep........the new LR will stay close with a mag and ready for duty......

thanks, i'll take my time and watch closely........i had to polish the ramp on my S&W 59 when i first got it as anything other than FMJ would hang up......now it takes soft and hollows.. thanks, bill
-
will do! thanks! bill
-
thanks for the advise!! that makes perfect sense. after cleaning and examing it yesterday i can see where that would happen. is there a round something like that with less weight that expands a little more than FMJ?? thanks, bill
-
mine has 1X10 twist. i've always been cautious about penetration and the FMJ just dont seem to be good for hunting, but i've not hunted in years so i'm out of touch. i know from police and swat days we always had to be concerned about excessive penetration. we used a lighter projectile?? when working football games we used wad cutters that we loaded the projectile backwards.....probably wont kill you but it will make you stop whatever you're doing that you shouldn't be doing....almost as good as rubber, maybe even better?? thanks and take care, bill
-
thanks for the help!! dissembled it yesterday and cleaned, oiled and back together for first sighting. hope to get to the range this saturday. dont know if this is okay for the forum, but i found a contest on grabagun. if this violates anything pleas remove.. take care, bill

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
brick13 replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
i just never felt comfortable with the 223 round. being in law enforecement it was always the question, they have 30-06's and big guns, why should i go after them with a squirrel gun?? my S&W 59 was out about 6 months when the factory issued a warning to those of us in sandy areas. if you have to fight and roll around in the sand, the firing pin is taperd and a grain of sand may jam it. my dad bought it from me and i bought a 6 inch Python for duty. when i left i sold the Python and when my dad passed i got the S&W 59 back........i'll post a target of the combat shoot i did in 2011.......i cant wish i still had the Python.....you have to move on! take care, bill -
someone posted their experience with various shells and magazines for the DPMS LR-308. now i cant find it? can someone please direct me? i'm getting ready to order magazines and would like to start out on the right foot. also, has anyone fired soft nose 308's in an LR-308 yet?? thanks and sorry for the loss of memory? bill

It's a pleasure to read this. i'm new to the platform and haven't cleaned it yet to start range testing......thank you for the advanced encouragement!!! take care, bill -
What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
brick13 replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
WOW!! i thought i was the only one that used Zara spooks!!! i found a guy in Melbourne Florida that had five of the originals in zip bags........$4.00 for each. you know they dont make the same shape today they did 40 years ago??? and yesterdays is the one to use!!! take care, bill -
I'm new too, but welcome from Florida's Space Coast across from Kennedy Space Center....

unforgiven, i have a family member in Greensburg...... Sketch, have one there too.....but she's my sister and she can stay there!!! hahahaha gnatshooter, once you learn its hard to quickly focus on anything else unless you are positioned right.. thanks to everyone else for clearing up the manufacturer topic......i now know who made my weapon....
-
thank you to one and all! i'm sorry for the mistake on the designation?? like i said, i'm new to this type of weapon!! but i'll learn quick. and i should have learned to check things out before saying who bought who?? i went to a bass pro shop and figured they hire folks with knowledge in the business....... anyway, i attached the front and rear sight today, then ran out of time to learn the dissamble and clean routine....i learned on open sights so i'm going to see how the first time at the range goes. i learned point shooting with both eyes open in LE and its still easy to quickly acquire target..this will be a real test of open sights for me......this will be my all around weapon for about everything, except where i cant carry it but my S&W 59 will do in those cases. my all time favorite for close encounters is a short shotgun with "00". the grips in my pic are for a riding buddy that needed another set for his Sauer single action 357. unforgiven, thanks for the reply........my son loves his garand also!! i see where a lot of folks live where i have family and friends......the world is getting smaller!!

Hi from the Space Coast in Titusville........

Hi all, i'm new to this forum and new to the AR-10 platform, but not new to weapons. former LEO and trained police sniper. Helped form the first SWAT Team for an agency here and was a member. most of that was about 35 years ago but some things never leave you. Almost retired now and still doing fraud investigation for a local county agency. have a variety of guns and just picked up our DPMS LR-308 two weeks ago. Still need to clean it and do some range work. i went through basic with the M-1 and my son sent through with the M-16. He knows both like the back of his hand. so far i am very impressed with the weapon. I chose this over another because these guys are still an independent manufacturer? I think? it's a pleasure meeting fellow weapon lovers and i hope that i may be able to help with some of my meager knowledge on other weapons as well as draw from here. thanks and take care, bill
