  1. I do not need anybody to keep me straight and I don't stray too far off......are you fucking guys kidding? The only people that I let bust my chops are close friends......I don't have any here. I think you have mistaken me for someone else......
  2. My last thread a guy said he had a problem with it.....If I see it again I will post it. I do know the difference with the patterns, everything I learned about .308 ARs I learned here......
  3. Yup 577....I was in the 1/11th ACR in Fulda Germany C troop and HHT for the 11th...I actually carried a M3 grease gun. I did more driving around in circles and mopping floors, police call, guard duty, CQ duty and so on than anything really soldier related. But that's another story...... It seems to save myself some agony I'll make sure the vendor can check it like Rainier. And of course use a lot of lube when I shoot it..... I'm going to order a LPK from Aero, they seem to have them in stock and it will save me some grief. If it's out of stock at least they have the pins and bolt catch earlier today. Of course how many times have I seen something in stock in the morning and go to buy it at night and it OOS. Again thanks to all and like I said I would have never attempted this without this web site. I probably if I wanted a .308 would have gotten an M1A1 and never shot it due to ergonomic issues or maybe an FAL......and sold it. I know with the AR I can make it comfortable for me and my beat up old body. I'm close to 60 and feel 80. Thank you all. I will continue reporting on this build and hope it helps someone else take the plunge from AR15 to .308 AR.
  4. Oh sorry, I have read so many who buy DPMS pattern BCGs and barrels from different vendors that do not work well. It seems to be a hit and miss. I read it here........many others on gun web sites are having issues causing them to waste money on parts that are not working together. The last one here was a guy with a nickel boron WMD BCG and I forgot which barrel, I think it was a DPMS barrel. The headspace was off. So it seems to be common, there is a lot of compatibility issues within the DPMS pattern concerning different vendors who say their product is in fact DPMS pattern.
  5. SSA LOL.....I meant SAA...Surplus Ammo is SAA....they have parts for the .308 like Blackhole Weaponry barrels which are pretty good. SSA not bad ammo, not great.
  6. Are you joking? Or being a smart A$$? No I read it about 20 times here that many people that have this pattern and buy BCGs and barrels from a different company had compatibility problems. I've been warned about it here, so I don't know what you are talking about.
  7. Ok I'll talk to him tomorrow or so, he's a good friend. I am definitely going to document this one for y'all. I'm sure many people will be putting these together in the future. If it can help someone that would be great. I'm so tempted to just go buy a Bushmaster XM10. But I know I will change so many things I might as well just build one.
  8. I didn't think the guy knew WTF he was talking about. But I do know that the bolt and barrel have problems even though they are both DPMS pattern. When I'm ready I'll probably end up calling Rainier. Especially if Aero doesn't have stuff in stock. I am going to call them tomorrow about the pins. I'll post what they say here. I'll talk with my gunsmith also. I don't know how much experience he has with .308 ARs, he does with just about everything else. Not many people have put together these guns or even worked on them. I have headspaced and timed many M2s with a go-no go gauge......I was a cav scout and drove M113s, M557s, ITVs.....and so on.
  9. Thanks, I knew this one going to be a difficult build and expensive. I would not have attempted it without this web site. I see on other web sites people having questions about .308 ARs and I always send them here. Thank you........ummmm.....did I say thanks....well thanks again. It could have ended up me spending a lot of wasted money which is something I do not want to do, I'd rather spend that on ammo. I'm looking SLR handguards/rails....I got one for an AR15 and it's really nice, lightweight and strong. The BIG issue is the BCG barrel. I called SSA and they would not confirm any bolt barrel compatibility, they just said you have to headspace and time it yourself. It looks like I am staying safe and buying a BCG and barrel from the same company probably Aero themselves. But they are always out of stock on stuff. I might eventually call Rainier, I have always had great service there.
  10. I have an Aero Precision upper & lower. I have read that Armalite lower parts fit. I also read they are better quality. Does the Armalite Pivot and Takedown pins fit correctly? I can get them as well as the bolt catch. I can get a whole LPK without the trigger for an Armalite AR10 from DSG. So educate me please........help!!! Finding compatible parts is a problem and Aero Precision has so many parts Out of stock.
  11. I'll take one.
  12. Next week I am starting the process to open a Texas Gun Trust. I will then SBR all my AR pistols. The major reason is simple, I do not like having anxiety and worry about what our wonderful government will do. I am hoping we get a republican president to ask congress and the senate to overturn many laws I consider illegal. Laws, they aren't even laws, they are judgments made by non-elected bureaucrats. We'll see if the republicans are for real pretty soon. From what I understand starting in 2015 even with a trust you have to fill out the forms and get it signed off by a CLEO. A certain CLEO will not sign off and I am going to another in the area. Even though it's against the law nobody will challenge him. That's a problem with the whole system, people continue to play god in our government and law enforcement/judicial system with impunity. That's completely un-American.........totally against the original intent of the people that started the whole thing. I'm not 100% happy with the brace and went through a lot of issues until I found the Odin tube, it has a locking ring that works OK. Now Phase 5 has come out with a better mouse trap. Still the whole thing is off a bit IMO. You cannot easily adjust it like your typical M4 setup and it just doesn't feel right when you drive the gun as taught in CQB techniques. It's just not secure feeling like a good Magpul or other type of stock. So for many reasons I am going to do the whole thing and SBR them. With the trust I might even get a suppressor or two, maybe a machine gun.....hmmmm. I sure do love Texas!!!
  13. What's the difference with the AR-10 buffer system?
  14. I think the 12". They have a few but don't have a lot of info about it. I'm going to call them this week or next and get more information. I think the heavy buffer will help with recoil and function. I am also probably going to use an adjustable gas block, SLR also makes them. I had a bad experience with a Spikes. I might just go with a Aero Precision BCG & barrel, 16" mid to keep everything compatible. I'm not crazy about their rails though. The SLR looks good. It's falling into place...... I'm not sure about a muzzle device yet. I'd like some type of braking, not a full brake. But my experience is that they are loud. With a 16" barreled .308 even the BCM might be too loud. So I'm leaning toward a simple prong like the AAC or Smith Vortex. They do have the effect of limiting noise a slight bit, even a very small amount of braking. Every muzzle device does a bit of all things, some go into the negative though. I'll take a slight bit of noise for a slight bit of braking effect. But the AAC is the direction I'm heading.
  15. So I ordered a set of Aero Precision M5 receivers. Now I'm trying to find a rail/handguard for them. I have been trying to get a Troy TRX and let me tell ya it was hard to find one at a good price. I gave up. I did find that SLR Rifleworks makes some very nice looking rails for the DPMS pattern high rail height like the M5 is. It looks better than the Midwest rail and as good or better than the Troy. Does anybody have any experience with them? They do like very nice, come with a barrel nut and a lockup system. Those are all things to consider. Next on the list is matching a BCG to the upper and barrel. The fun has begun. I do know I am going with the heavy buffer and spring combo and a mil-spec 7075 extension tube, I do like the Vltor ones. I have a Timney trigger and battle arms selector. I'm going with the new Magpul K2+ grip and a SL MOE stock both in OD Green. Getting there......thanks to y'all I think I'll make it.
  16. Didn't know that, it helps with planning the rest of the build. I'll have to contact Rainer and see if they might offer that service of headspacing the bolt and barrel with a bolt they supply. Not sure how they do it in an AR. The only one I did was a 50 cal. with a go/no go gauge. Ay info would be appreciated or personal experience good and bad. I think you can learn more from mistakes than from the things you did right.
  17. So now the journey begins.......I'll keep y'all posted on it's progress.
  18. I did it, Aero Precision upper and lower on Gunbroker. I think I scored pretty good on the price. He had 7 sets. I paid $248 for a set of receivers. I hope I'm not breaking any rules talking about the price.
  19. I have a FFL friend I use, thanks. Nickel Boron is nice but not necessary. I was amazed at how slippery it was without lube. It needs lube though. As for shooting, no difference, it's more about clean up. I don't really clean my ARs much, I use quality ammo and just wipe them down. I'm rethinking the Rainer barrel now. Maybe it's better to go with a Aero barrel since I'm using their other products. I like the idea of sending it to Rainer though if I buy one of their barrels. They are far away from Texas but have always served me well. Got a good price on my DDM4V5 from them and many other parts for ARs. I'm so tempted to just by a Bushy XM-10 and call it a day. I know that I will start changing things to make it more shootable for me from a ergonomic point. I ended up doing that to an AK. I didn't want to change anything on my AK. Once I fired it I really liked the rifle but it was not comfortable for my old broken body. I have spinal issues and arthritic hands, it's raining in Texas right now and it hurts like hell for me. So I ended up Magpulling the AK, love it now, I used their new grip, a SL MOE stock and an AFG on a Midwest rail. I like .30cal rifles a lot. I tried a .300 Blackout and was disappointed, it's a niche round. I re-barreled the gun to 5.56mm. It's great suppressed and for hunting hogs. I was also worried about mixing ammo types. I was going to get a M1A1 but the AR platform is something I am familiar with since I was in the army 30 years ago. Plus a lot of the AR-15 stuff fits the .308 which makes it give me the feel of my AR-15s. I learned about how important that can be with handguns, plus the age factor allows my decrepit body to have the ever so important correct ergonomics for me. I like Glocks but they just do not fit my hands well so I went with the M&P for those reasons. Although the little sub compacts are fine because the grip is so short the angle is not a factor. I try to think things out and not make disastrous mistakes. This is some what unchartered waters we are going into with these rifles. It's great to have a place to share the information. I would have NEVER attempted putting together an AR in .308 without having such a great resource.
  20. Thank you for the reply guys. Good info there. Have you tried a DPMS BCG in your rifle crimsonfalcon07? I have been researching it even more today and last night before I make a move. Did AP change anything with their receivers? Are there like genI or genII types things going on? I read that too, that it's a high. Actually high is probably better, it has more metal in that area. It looks like my best bet is to go with all Aero stuff inside as in LPK & BCG, a Rainer barrel, Troy rail, any mil-spec AR tube, .308 carbine buffer and spring. I'm looking for sales and/or breaks on prices but don't want to get stuff that is not compatible. I really like Nickel Boron BCGs, are they necessary? NO, not really but they are slick and from what I understand anything in a .308 that might help is something to be considered. In an AR-15 not so much, IMO.
  21. I have been researching for a while now and have decided the start of the new year I will build it. First came the decision that I would go with the DPMS pattern rifle, a so-called no-brainer. Next question was do I buy or build, I decided to build and use Aero Precision parts. This was my thinking. If I buy I would buy a Bushmaster XM10 rifle with a 16" barrel, it has almost everything I want. That will cost about $1000 give or take plus shipping maybe tax and transfer. For about $500 more I can get a complete AP rifle. If I want a scope the Bushy needs a new front sight, I would change the grip and stock anyway so now we just spent a few hundred dollars more on it. With the Aero rifle I would end up doing the same thing and the money starts adding up. So whatever way I look at it for the best bang for the buck I'm going with the Aero Precision receiver set, BCG and maybe a barrel. For a few bucks more I can get their BCG in Nickel Boron. From everything I have read their stuff seems very compatible with a true DPMS. Once I get the receivers and BCG I can get other parts as I have the money. Maybe a Troy rail and a Rainer barrel, I have options as parts become more available. Plus I learn more and more what little parts are better, for instance I have read the Armalite bolt catch is better than the DPMS. Maybe someone will make a upgrade one in the coming year and I'm sure things will be introduced at shot show. I have PSA AR15 stuff, it was excellent and moderately priced. I was very disappointed with the reports of their PA10 items and lost faith in them as a supplier now. They jumped the gun on it and that was a huge mistake IMO. That almost scared me off the project and made me really do my homework about compatibility and parts quality. It seems the Aero Precision is the safest bet, am I correct on this? I do have a question, do the Aero Precision uppers have the high or low rail height? A low height would make it easier to get rails and sights for it as far as I can tell. Also it seems more compatible with AR15 stuff. Am I on the right track here? Can anybody add anything to this? I would really appreciate more input. I already have gleamed so much from this sight. I just got the Magpul 45 degree sights for a scoped AR and they are excellent. So this is probably the way I'm going with the .308 and a descent scope. I don't need a long rail. I want to keep it a kind of more military type battle rifle or as they might call it a DMR, somewhere between them. I like the idea of a shorter handier rifle with some medium range ability. I will probably never shoot more than 300 yards in my life and the mostly the longest 100. It's a range toy for a retired guy.
  22. Are you guys kidding? Any AR15/M16/M4 part that is mil-spec stays mil-spec, it's a mil-spec AR part. You put it on a .308 rifle or any other rifle it is still a mil-spec AR part. The .308 is not a mil-spec rifle but can use some M16/M4 mil-spec parts. It's semantics I guess. But this thread reads like an Abbott and Costello script. So you have a .308 AR pattern rifle with an AR15/M16/M4 mil-spec part in it. If anybody says they have a mil-spec part in their .308 I would automatically think they are talking about an AR part, yet ask what part to clarify. If they say I have a mil-spec bolt in my .308 we all know that's impossible and that person is misinformed and incorrect, right. It's pretty simple......
  23. I didn't know what to expect when I watched the video but I can agree 100% with the guy. I did buy one rifle, a DDM4V5, best money I ever spent. At the time they used the quality & expense on the most important parts and went cheap on the others to hold the cost down. Now they use all this weird looking stuff. I just changed the grip, stock and added sights, next is a scope and 45 degree irons of some kind and I'm done. Great rifle. All my others are built. I spent the money on quality barrels and saved on quality Blem receivers from BCM, DD, PSA and Noveske. All other parts are quality LPKs and triggers. BCGs are also quality M16 with 158 bolts. All the rifles shoot great and are accurate. The only issue I had was with a 7.5" and the PWS CQB muzzle device, once I changed to a KX3 the gun ran fine. I don't really like those big ugly muzzle devices on my pistols/SBRs but the guy standing next to me at the range likes them. Without them they are LOUD!!! That is why I have decided to build a DPMS pattern .308 AR. It took me a while to find the right parts for me and it was a bit expensive for my AR-15s. But I know what I like ergonomically in terms of grips, stocks, rails. I like the Magpul K2 and the MOE SL stock. For rails and handguards I like thin, the MOE SL carbine handguard is fine, for rails as long as it's 2" or under thickness, although the Troy Bravo seems OK, I prefer the Alpha with a AFG. So now after X amount of time and money I can pretty much put a rifle together without having to go through part of the month. I really want the .308 AR. It's a battle not to just buy a Bushmaster XM-10 because that's close to what I want. The guy in the video is absolutely correct. I will change the sights, stock, grip and probably add a muzzle device like a BCM comp. So why not just wait for some sales or free shipping and build one. I figure I'll start with a DPMS receiver set (maybe Aero Precision), BCG and mil-spec extension tube. From what I understand the Armalite LPK is superior. Add a quality 16" mid-length gas system barrel and that's most of the rifle right there. Plus I can buy things as they become available and on sale. Sales save a lot once you add up the shipping and some times tax. I will put up a picture here when I finish it. I will do it but it will take till about the summer.
  24. Thanks 1legdown, appreciate the information, that's why I came here. It's hard for me to lay down that kind of money at one time. Every time I start saving I see something or something happens and the money is gone. A month ago it was a set of tires for the truck, that I needed. A few minutes ago I got a S&W M&P 40 for less than $300 shipped on Gunbroker, that I wanted. 2 months ago I went into the donut hole on my Medicare medication so that took a chunk of change for the rest of the year. I'm retired and have medical issues, thank goodness for shooting or I would have lost my mind. It's easier to buy a few parts at a time of the things I like for the gun, like a set of receivers first, then a BCG, a barrel and so on. I'm thinking by the end of next year I might have enough to just buy a Bushmaster XM-10 MOE. It has the chrome lined barrel and mid-length gas system and is DPMS based. I'll keep watching how everything unfolds with the .308 AR and what is being offered. When I see things on Palmetto State I'm so tempted but I have read some bad things about their .308 stuff. I do have some PSA ARs, FN barrels are great and receivers/BCGs are fine, I was surprised and disappointed at the .308 stuff not being up to par. It's a one and done thing with this gun. I'm not collecting them so I want to make it count. I just hope they don't start multiplying.
