through a local gun shop almost 35 years ago I bought a safe direct from the manufacturer in so. cal. it was/is bare bones with no interior, one of these days I'm going to finish the interior... as a matter of fact I just got the metal clips on amazon about 20 minutes ago it would be nice to be able to store some ammo, and have shelves and such.... y'all inspired me....

Flat tops and permanent and/backup iron sights
AngelDeVille replied to AngelDeVille's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
Found a “used” set of Troy’s $160 shipped and taxed I think if I hadn't run across these I would have gotten the Deuk/Surefire's I think IF I can find an LR308 or an Armalite carry handle I will go that route, with a Troy HK style front fixed sight. It's a shame there aren't more quality options... I really don't want an M1A or an FN/FAL just for a better set of irons.... -
Flat tops and permanent and/backup iron sights
AngelDeVille replied to AngelDeVille's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
I have seen the magpul ones and I have a regular front folding. I think if I get folding 45* it will be the Troy. Their quality is fucking outstanding. But they are in the $250+ price range. the Deuk/Surefire can be had around $170 (primary arms) and are fixed. I had just a passing thought about going the red dot route and I could try it with an existing red dot as I do have a couple offset rail sections. the expense of a red dot would be similar to my sight preferences. That sig romeo looks promising. I have a holosun 507 on one of my pistols but I don’t recall how much that was and would have to research how to mount it. -
Flat tops and permanent and/backup iron sights

Ok I think what I need to figure out is, do I want a precision iron sight rifle -OR- a scoped rifle with backup sights that are readily deployed. the issue with precision iron sights is I cannot find a quality rear sight. The Troy fixed front sight is awesome as is the fixed rear. But the rear sight is a battle sight at best. I can find some inexpensive A2 rear sights, but the quality is questionable. I do have the same Troy sights as folding and those are fine, I’m just not fond of the folding feature for any of my applications. If I’m going to use 45* sights with the scope then battle sights are fine. Troy makes a set with the same qualities as the regular fixed but they are folding, but otherwise a contender. surefire makes a nice A2 offset set, not folding but they are maybe too precise for backups. -
Gotcha, the one I built on the right has a 9mm specific buffer and spring but I can’t recall where I got it from. It looks like that buffer you posted takes up the space on the front end vs the spacer behind the spring. Two solutions to the same problem. I may have gotten it from the same place I got either the bolt or the place I got the barrel. the home built AR9 runs like a striped ass ape, I almost don’t like the fancy trigger as it has a super short reset and is lighter than I’m used to. I may get the fx9 to the range tomorrow.
-
Ok on the right is my recoil spring from my home built AR9 with the spacer. left is from the fx9 the tube on the fx9 is milled with the spacer built in, so if I decided to switch the assembly I would need a spacer and the removed tube could not be used in a regular AR. Good to know…
-
So the bolt doesn’t have to travel as far back to cycle the 9mm. if it does it hammers the poop out of the trigger group and the last round hold open if so equipped. a plastic spacer dropped in the tube before the recoil spring fixes this. I haven’t detail stripped the fx9 yet to compare it to my ar9.

On the AR platform I greatly prefer the ar15/m16 A1. but due the the nature of advancement in firearm technology I currently have 3 (three) flat tops my new FX9 has a decent red dot (primary arms) and for backup irons a magpul front folding and an Matech Air Force flip up rear. (Have a few of these) My 300 blackout has the same red dot and a set of non folding Troy sights (supposed to be scar type sight picture) two aperture flip on the rear like an A1 Now we come to my AR10 I have been happy enough with the 4-14 primary arms scope Here lieth the problem, I would love to just have M1A type iron sights on it. I have a fixed Troy AR front sight on the AR10 and I do like it I also have the matching folding rear Troy, with the same flip aperture as the other Troy/A1 style. I would like more precision for this caliber. The Matech Air Force sight has the precision, but I’m mildly afraid it is too delicate for primary sight use. maybe I would be happy keeping the glass on it and using 45* offset sights? (I’d hope not to spend $300 on these) maybe I would just like a carry handle with a QUALITY A2 sight? I know irons aren’t the popular choice but what are my options? I shoot irons effectively at 500-800 yards and can do 1,000 if I keep in practice. The pics of the Matech if anyone hasn’t seen them. it’s a great sight calibrated to the 5.56 round.

I could use a couple spares so maybe if they are substantially cheaper I’ll get a couple. I had read about the 9mm ar quirks so I got antiwalk pins for the slick side I built and made sure I put the spacer in the recoil tube. My slickside has been 100% reliable. I’m very happy with it. AND it wa the very first “fancy” trigger I ever bought. The fancy trigger is very light. I have a mildly enhanced trigger on my xm177e2, and did my own trigger jobs on most everything else I own. Some of the videos I had watched on the FX9 had mentioned upgrading it with antiwalk pins, BUT the one I got already had them from the factory, so the company must have been listening their customers. since the fx9 is my third flat top I have some questions about iron sights but I think I’ll start a new thread as it pertains to my ar10 mostly.

@MtnMike sounds like it’s trustworthy enuff I’m thinking one of these 9mms is going to take the forefront in the hd department. the fx9 came with one clear plastic mag, I’m sure it’s fine but it doesn’t instill as much confidence as the Glock factory mags. I have an old primary arms dot. It pre dates shake awakes but has 50,000 hours constantly on so that work for me. I installed a flashlight and removed the vertical grip in favor of a stop and got a proper sling swivel mount for the front. I put the butt it came with as it’s just fine. out to the range tomorrow

My pistol only serves to get me to my rifle, but it doesn’t mean I don’t like them. I have had many types of them but one of my favorites is the TT-33 or the Norinco type 54. They are basically a ripoff of the 1903 Colt, and share similarities with the 1911. I feel equally at home with a 1911, a 17/19 Glock, a 3-4” revolver, a Jframe or dick special. But the TT-33 is my favorite. here is my Romanian TT-33 and Norinco type 54. the Norinco is better built, but I just fit a type 54 barrel to the Romanian to replace the sewer pipe it came with. for a truck or hiking pistol I trust it like no other. the 7.62x25 round has its advantages, and there are more than a few of these pistols types available in 9mm. What’s y’all’s favorite pistol?

the new barrel is oversized in the hood area. I picked up my Norinco (type 54) tt33 today and before I got too far along in fitting the new barrel to the Romanian tt33 I wanted to see how the new barrel fit in the norinco. yep similarly oversized in the 54. And the Romanian and Chinese barrels are practically interchangeable. so I’m on the right track fitting the new barrel (it is a type 54 replacement) it is a shame to have to fit the hood as the blueing is/was quite lovely -

new tt33 barrel needs more fitting than I wanted to do, but the barrel is very nice. I'll get it fitted this weekend.... -

A while back I got a Romanian tt33 and it has a marginal barrel. I had looked for a replacement and the replacement was missing the link, or bushing or both. So I gave up the search Buying the norinco tt33 got me looking again for a replacement barrel for the Romanian, and I found a new one with the barrel link and bushing on eBay of all places The romanian the norinco came with extra mags and wolf spring kits My utility belt -

There is a new to me local shop I have discovered through gunbroker. they had listed a norinco tt33 that I really took a liking to. I will be taking home the tt33 and that polymer frame smith and Wesson .38 with a laser next week. I had known ruger had made a polymer framed revolver, but didn’t know smith made one. It’s +p rated, and slender and sleek. -
I did have one m lok rail and a bunch of I think magpul rails. I slapped a few on there along with a vert grip put a cut down a1 grip too. I’m not familiar with the different types of cheesegrater mounting systems but all I had to do with the magpul moe mounts is hold a plate in place while I tightened the rail section down the m lok you just turn the screw 90 degrees and it’s done
-
Aww fornicate… the FX9 is overall pretty awesome, but it has that M-lok handguard thing. I have some modern accessories so I need to figure out if what I have fits it… I already put an xm177 type stock on it, the one it came with was quite nice but too ergonomic for me. I have a primary arms red dot, a magpul front sight and the air force rear sight on it so far. I fed the beachin sling through the m-lok slots on the handguard. I have a hand stop I would like to use but I need to add a rail section. it came with one of those clear “glock” magazines and it doesn’t instill confidence.

To go with the new sticks, I bought a Freedom Ordinance FX9… I had been reminiscing fondly about my former Taurus model 80 and have been looking for another… -BUT- my favorite local shop only sells on gunbroker now and I just a hour ago I won this auction for a Smith & Wesson Model 36 - 38 Spl - 3" - Mfg. Pre-1962… got it cheaper than a decent Taurus 80…. -
You are doing the math wrongly… I'm not counting the red dot I have had for 7 years but I am counting the battery that I changed out 2 years ago even though the old battery was still working.. $2 I'm not counting the $400 Glock 17 I got to go with the ar9 because I traded away two cz’s to get my scandium 1911… two pistols in, two pistols out… I’m not counting the plethora of Glock magazines I just got because I already had a bunch, and the ones I just got were 20% off. I'm not counting the molle gear I had to buy because I already had some but don’t like the usgi vest pos thing I bought last year and a replacement was in order. I should probably get either a Glock 19, 34, or a 17L to go with the fx9, so I need to figure out how that will cost little to nothing. so so far my additional expenses are only $2 the ret dot is 50,000 hour so I could spend another $2 preemptively…. plus ammo…
