    Oklahoma

I'm a Colorado transplant 24 years ago when I got stationed here at Altus AFB. Growing up in Colorado Springs I never would have believed I would settle here in Oklahoma. I thought OKlahoma was for folks that didn't know and better. Now I am one. When we were stationed here in 1991 my wife cried for 3 days and we were stationed in Germany at the time. When we moved here my daughter started kindergarten the same year and we discovered it was a great place to raise kids. After a couple years we decided to purchase some more land so we wouldn't have to hunt for a place to shoot. We've had that 400 acres besides the 20 we are living on for 24 years. I didn't think there would be any deer hunting down here but I see more deer then I ever saw in Colorado.
  2. Thank you Plainflyer21 I am tickled pink with it and fell in love at first sight. I only wish it used the same magazines as my AR-10T Original Armalite
  3. Okay, I'll bite. Last Tuesday I had some extra time and I stopped in to visit with everyone at the Yellow Rose in Altus Oklahoma. It's an indoor range and gun sales. Something caught my eye as I walked in the door and looked at the rifle rack. There was a Windham Hunter .308 AR with a Nutmeg wood Laminate stock on it. Man it got my attention with the wood and the gold anodised upper and lower. I'm a .308 fan I guess since I own 4 of them and decided I need the Windham in one of my vaults. We've been helping my daughter and son in law since they gave us our first grandchild and ended up with mega hospital bills so money has been a bit tight. At the time I had a FNAR that I picked up a couple of years ago while just thinking I couldn't live without it. However the 1.5 MOA accuracy and trigger never made me very happy. I've got an Armalite AR-10T W/24" barrel that was built in 1998 and still shoots great. It's got a Springfield Generation III .308 scope on it that I'm quite happy with. So one Wednesday I took the FNAR down to see about trading or putting it up for consignment. Of course they couldn't realistically give me what I wanted for it so consignment it was. 3 hours later Jerry called me saying it sold for what I was asking. We had already worked out a deal for the Windham for $1240 out the door. Thursday I dropped by and filled out the paperwork and Jerry knocked a bunch off what he quoted me making me extra happy. (He is building a longer outdoor range at his son's country house and would like to borrow my bulldozer) I had already told him no problem as soon as I get it back from getting the cylinders rebuilt and hoses replaced. Anyway Thursday evening I swapped out the charging handle latch for one that would fit better under a Burris XTR 3-12X50 Scope I was putting on the Windham Hunter. I also installed a 1.5 lb pull Jard trigger on it and the Browning Latigo type nylon sling. Friday after getting done with a termite job that my son in law helped me with I shot a 4 shot 5/8" group and then pulled the 5th shot down a little to make it a 1" group. I'm officially happy with this rifle and believe I'm going to turn it into my deer rifle and hog hammer. I must say the Yellow Rose treated me quite well. Kind of on the same subject about me loaning him our dozer, he has a front in loader on a 4 wheel drive John Deer tractor that he brought over with several used tractor tires to replace the shot out ones in my pasture. My 50 BMG is kind of tough on them and filling them with concrete chunks and dirt by hand is a pain in the back. So loaning him the dozer was always in the plan. It's nice to have a good back stop at 100 yards that I can shoot from my front porch.
  4. I just ordered 4, PMags for the Windham .308 Hunter I picked up Thursday. I'm tickled pink with it so far and while shooting my loads for my Armalite AR-10T I got a 4 shot 5/8" group that I pulled into a 1" group with the 5th shot. uploading images

    Hello

Thank you all for the welcome posts. I can't believe I had not found this site until recently. I've been in love with my AR-10T and how well it shoots for a long time. By the way I got a chance to shoot it after I finished a termite job yesterday with my son in law with me. I grouped 4 shots in 5/8" center to center and then I pulled the last shot down to make it a 1" group. The wind was blowing out of the south enough to bug me but I know I'm going to love this Windham Hunter. Those guys that Bushmaster left behind when they moved the company know how to build a great rifle.
  6. Where is the edit function? My computer keyboard died on the above post and I was in the middle of falling asleep while typing it. Any way the FNAR never really turned me on like my Armalite AR-10T. The accuracy was nothing to write home about and the trigger was no fun and I couldn't find a way to fix it. So when I took it to our local range after seeing the Wingham Hunter .308 AR I decided I had to have it. I put it there on consignment for $950. $900 to me and $50 to the shop and he called me in 3 hours saying it sold. So Thursday I went down and purchased the Windham Hunter with the Nutmeg wood stock. I spent Thursday evening replacing the charging handle latch, putting in a 1.5 lb Jard trigger and Burris XTR3-12X50 Scope. Friday after finishing a termite job I was able to shoot 4 shot 3/4 or perhaps a 5/8" group center to center and the 5th shot I pulled down to make it a 5 shot 1" group. She is a shooter my friends. I'm going to turn this rifle into my deer rifle and hog hammer.
  7. I just did some research and man it just about broke my heart. Brunton had the best focus out there and great glass that was as good or better than any other high end binocular manufacture. Now it seems that Brunton is getting out of the optics business. So much for my HALO lifetime warranty. Still I wouldn't part with my pair for anything. The one thing I did to mine was replace all the lense covers with see through pop up scope covers. With high end lenses I don't want to have to clean them and the scope covers seal them up tight. I don't try to use the see through lenses on the scope covers as they just pop up and are very handy while hunting. I always wondered why Brunton didn't spend more on advertising to compete with the big boys but I still see them being sold for around $1300 on some optics dealers. I bet they can be found cheaper though. Their $4000 spotting scope can be had for around $1000 now which is a good deal if you want quality w/out warranty. Man I was always proud of that HALO warranty, that said if you run over them with your pick up they would replace them. Shucks! :soap:
  8. I love the Brunton Epoc Binoculars. They rate right up there with Zeiss, Leica or any other high end binocular. I had some great telescopes but one day the viewing was perfect and I had Saturn on my Nexstar 11. A perfect picture of a beautiful planet. My sister and brother in law were visiting and my daughter and wife were playing cards and I couldn't get them to bother to look. So I sold them and purchased what I thought were top of the line binoculars.
  9. I started out with a FN FAL with a Clinton Stock on it. Big mistake since I couldn't reach the safety without reaching over the gun with my right hank to flip it. Then I discovered what a pain in the butt the triggers were. So I sold it and picked up a Federal Ordinance M14 (M1A) That Chinese receiver always left a fowell taste in my mouth and I frankly couldn't get past it. So I sold that one also even though it shot pretty good. Then I stumpled across the holy grail a 1998 Armalite AR--10T with the 24 inch barrel. It had a Springfield III generations scope on it and I was tickled pink. It was not long before I was consistently shooting 1/2 MOA groups with 44 grains of Varget behind a 168 grain A-max. By then I still had the bug and had picked up a Winchester Featherweight in .308 that shot so well I wouildn't sell it for $2000. I was amazed and decided I needed a truck gun in .308 that I could put in my work truck to handle Problem critter. Now it's no fancy grouper but for $350 bucks sdI'm not going to complain. Then I thought I needed an FNAR. Nope I picked up the 20 inches rifle and liked the fit and finidhidn't it was old and some people like them
  10. I've been watching this since last fall and put my name on the list as soon as they started talking about it. Now after a bunch of delays I'm kind of glad I didn't put a bunch of money up front. I would be pretty mad if they had cashed my check and then pulled an 8 to 10 month delay in shipping. I don't know what the hang up is about but I love the idea. I'm having a lot of fun shooting my 50 BMG and almost sprung for the MagnetoSpeed V3 Ballistic Chronograph but found out that it wouldn't work with the muzzle brake on my 50 BMG. So since then I've been relying on my Chrony Gama Model with the printer. It has not given me any problems but I still like the idea behind the Labradar if they get off their butt and work out the production problems.

    Hello

Back on the subject of latigo slings, back when I was 18 and I traded into the 03A3 30 Belted Newton the guy that built it taught me how to use a Latigo sling to stablize myself when shooting long range. Most of my slings are either leather Latigo or nylon that work the same way. Much like that Browning sling that I didn't sell with the FNAR. I made up for it when I let it go with 4 magazines. 2, 20 round and 2 10 round. FN is pretty proud of them.

    Hello

Woohoo I had a chance to put 15 rounds down range (off my front porch) today and once I got it zeroed and quit playing with the adjustments I shot a 1" group. The wind was pushing to my left at 12 MPH and the 5 shot group would have been better but one was a flyer. I cleaned it after every 5 shots to break it in right. I do think it's going to make a great hog hammer.

    Hello

I'm fixing to sight it in now. To bad that so many companies decided to use different magazines then the original Armalite AR-10 used. I have a bunch of generation II 10 and 25 round magazines for my Armalite and I have to admit I do love it. When I first picked it up it was an original 1998 AR-10T with the 24" barrel. As I purchased some generation II magazines I found there were problems with feeding. I contacted Armalite and they sent me everthing I needed to bring it up to date free and I had the parts in 3 days. I consider that great customer service. By the way that is not a Brownells Latigo sling, it's the Browning sling from the FNAR that I kept. I do however have several Latigo slings on my rifles starting with my custom 1903 Springfield 30 Belted Newton that is much older than I am but still shoots great pushing a 180 grain Nosler partition at 2915 FPS. I picked it up when I was 18 years old and it got me started reloading because I couldn't purchase ammo for it. Ok time to shoot, I'll give a report later.
  14. About 4 years ago I invited a group of on line friends from a concealed carry forum I was active on to get together on my place and shoot anything we wanted to. I had plenty of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder to make my own Tannerite and I invited the sheriff and game warden so they wouldn't get spooked and we had a lot of fun shooting handguns and doing some long range shooting. We were having a bunch of fun shooting Tannerite at 350 yards and I had my new Canon "ALL WEATHER" 10X50 Image Stabilized Binoculars, my old spotting scope and the Springfield scope on my AR-10T when one heck of a storm blew in on us. We got stuck on a ridge through a couple of inches of rain and hail trying to hold a tarp over our heads with not much luck. Those $1565 Canon "ALL WEATHER" binoculars ended up with all kinds of moisture inside the lens but my old Spacemaster II spotting scope and the Springfield scope didn't have a bit of a problem. I promptly got a return authorization number from Canon and sent them in to be fixed. I got a letter from them saying they would be happy to fix them for $1568. I was shocked at their lack of customer service. At the time I could purchase a new pair on Ebay for $999. I ended up taking them apart myself and drying them out. The image stabilization still works but they are not as clear as they were. Of course I didn't have to tools to take them apart the way the factory would. I also had a pair of Brunton Epoch 8X42 Lifetime HALO warranty that even covers them if they are run over with a truck but they were just fine. I thought that spending that much money on the Canon Binos would assure me of quality. You can bet I'll never purchase another Canon product.

    Hello

Thank you all for the welcome I pulled the trigger here is the story: A couple of years ago I purchased a FNAR .308 with the 20” heavy barrel. While It was okay the trigger was not something that made me very happy and I couldn’t find a way to make it like I wanted. I never seemed to be able to get it group consistently below 1” to 1.5”as opposed to my Armalite AR-10T that gives me consistent .5 MOA groups with 168 grain A-Max bullets. This Tuesday I walked into the Yellow Rose a local range and gun shop ran by a friend of mine and there was a Windham .308 Hunter with the wooden laminate nutmeg stock. There was something about it that turned me on and yesterday I dropped off my FNAR to see if I could get any nibbles on it so I could make room for the Windham rifle. Well 3 hours later I got a call and it sold for what I had asked. I expected it to set on his shelf for two or three weeks so I was pretty tickled. I had some time so I wandered down to the shop to pick up the rifle. I've been working most of the evening on it getting it like I want it. I tried to get the trigger down to a reasonable weight the way I usually do by running a ¼”X28 tap up in the grip mounting hole and putting a 1/4 “ allen set screw to reduce the length of pull on the trigger however by doing that and putting lighter springs I still couldn’t bring the trigger pull down below 6 lbs. So in the long run I ended up putting a 1.5 lb Jard trigger in it and mounted a Burris XTR 3-12X50 Extreme Tactical scope on it that I originally had on the FN. Tomorrow I get to shoot it. Hope she shoots under an inch with my usual loads but if not I'll take the time to work some up. uploading images images hosting
  16. I picked up this Armalite AR-10T with the 24" barrel right after Obama was first "elected". It came with the Generation III Springfield scope with the .308 reticle. l've never once looked back and regretted it. It's a `1998 model and when I first purchased some Generation II magazines they didn't work quite right and I contacted Armalite and wow what a stand up company. They right away sent me everything I needed to convert my rifle to handle the second generation magazines. I never had anymore trouble with it. I did put a Magpul stock on it and have thought about getting a new upper receiver with a forward assist but it's not like I've really needed it. The rifle still shoots a 168 grain Hornady A-Max within 1/2 MOA so I cannot complain and I fear if I change anything it will go against me. Its a bit heavy with that 24" barrel but when setting at the bench in reasonable weather I can ring the gongs at our local copper mine riding and shooting club. They have gongs set up from 300 yards out to a mile. I've used the reticle out to 700 yards but not beyond that. It however hit every target I tried out to that 700 yards.

    Hello

Hi everyone, I'm Ron from SW Oklahoma. I grew up in Colorado hunting and fishing up in the mountains and never would have believed I'd settle in Oklahoma. I always thought Oklahoma was for folks that didn't know any better and now I am one. I got stationed here at Altus AFB in 1991 and my 5 year old daughter at the time was just ready to start kindergarten. We purchased a house in the country and found out Oklahoma was a great place to raise kids. When I got this assignment I knew there weren't any deer here and I'd have to head back to Colorado to do some quality hunting. Wow did I find different news as I got used to this place. We purchased 20 acres with a house on it, a few horses and we also soon picked up 400 acres SW of Mangum. I've lived here for 24 years and have not been back to Colorado hunting since. We've got more deer on our place and around our house than I ever found in Colorado. I've been a gun collector for as long as I can remember. My wife and I got married 36 years ago 3 months after we met and she already had 6 guns that she brought into our marriage at age 20. I had about the same amount and over the past 36 years we've only gone up from there. In the mid 1980s I picked up my first AR-15 a Colt SP-1 and by year 2000 I was kind of tired of the sorry accuracy and sold it to purchase a Bushmaster Varminter. I also picked up an Armalite AR-10T with the 24" barrel and have loved it ever since. I really love both of them and have built several of my own AR-15s from parts since 2000. Recently I ran into a Windham .308 Hunter with the wood composite stock. Except for the lawyer type trigger that I can easily fix there was not much about it that I didn't like. I stopped by our local gun range that a good friend of mine owns today with my FNAR to talk about trading it for one of the Winham Hunters. As I expected they couldn't give me enough for the FNAR so I had then put it there on consignment for $950. Less than 3 hours later he called me to let me know it sold already. Any of you all have much experience with the Windham Hunter 308? I like the feel of it and think it will match up with the rest of my other 3, .308s. The Armalite is a sweet tack driver that I'm very pleased with but a bit to heavy to hunt with. My Winchester Model 70 Featherweight has been a rifle that I'm very proud of. It was my first .308 and I picked it up in 1983 and wouldn't sell it for a bunch more than I paid for it. You just don't find a factory gun that is a consistent 1/2 MOA performer. My other bolt .308 is a Ruger American that I keep for a truck gun in case I run into something that my 10mm Delta Elite won't handle. I kill bugs for a living and never know where I'm going to end up. Sometimes it can be in a pretty rough side of town. The gunshop owner is making me a good deal. As soon as my bulldozer is finished getting the cylinders rebuilt and my hydraulic lines replaced he has asked to borrow it. Allowing me to pick up the Windham for cost will really help make a difference. So in the long run do any of you have any experience with Windham AR-10 Hunter?
